1. Chinese officials join probe into Dasu bus blast

• Interior Minister Sheikh Rashid has disclosed that a 15-member team of Chinese investigators has joined the ongoing investigations into the Dasu bus explosion.
• The investigations were at an advanced stage and the culprits would be taken to task soon, the minister told a presser in Islamabad on July 17, 2021.
• He said the Chinese team of investigators arrived on Friday and visited the incident site with security officials


2. Pakistan reopens Afghan border at Chaman

• Pakistan reopened its border with Afghanistan at Chaman on July 17, 2021 to allow several thousand Afghan nationals to cross into their country, who had been stranded in Pakistani territory due to border closure by Pakistani authorities after the Taliban captured Spin Boldak and Wesh areas of Afghanistan last week.
• This was the second time that Pakistan opened the border crossing in the last four days for sending back Afghan nationals, including women, children and patients, to their country


3. Sindh cabinet approves plan to take over four KMC hospitals

• The Sindh cabinet on July 17, 2021 approved an amendment in the police rules and handing over of four hospitals of Karachi Metropolitan Corporation (KMC) to the provincial health department.
• Chief Minister Syed Murad Ali Shah presided over a five-hour-long cabinet meeting and took important decisions including procurement of security featured number plates for vehicles and reduced cotton fee from Rs20 to Rs10 per 100kg.
• The cabinet approved a proposal to take over four KMC hospitals Gizri Maternity Hospital, Sobhraj Maternity Hospital, Gazdarabad General Hospital in district South and Landhi Medical Complex in district Korangi along with their staff and hand them over to the Sindh health department


4. Afghan politicians, Taliban meet in Doha as fighting continues

• Afghan politicians met representatives of the Taliban insurgents in Qatar on July 17, 2021 with each side calling for peace even as fighting escalates and uproots thousands of people.
• The two-decade-old conflict has taken a turn for the worse as US-led international forces withdraw and the Taliban launch offensives around Afghanistan, taking districts and border crossings while encircling provincial capitals.
• Negotiators have been meeting in Doha since September but have failed to make substantive progress with time running out before foreign troops` full exit by Sept 11


5. US, five Central Asian states vow not to allow forced takeover in Afghanistan

• There`s no support in the region for `the imposition by force` of a new government in Afghanistan, says a joint statement signed by the United States and its five Central Asian allies.
• In the document issued in Washington on Saturday, the United States, Kazakhstan, Kyrgyzstan, Tajikistan, Turkmenistan and Uzbekistan also said that `terrorists and third-party forces must never be allowed to use Afghan territory to threaten or attack the C5+1 countries or any other country.
• The alliance known as Five Plus-One pledged to work together to end the Afghan conflict, noting that the war had stunted economic progress in the South and Central Asian regions


6. Assad sworn in for 4th term in war-torn country

• Syrian President Bashar Assad was sworn in on Saturday for a fourth seven-year term in the war-torn country.
• The May elections were described by the West and Assad`s opposition as illegitimate and a sham.
• The swearing-in ceremony was held at the presidential palace and attended by clergymen, members of parliament, political figures and army officers


7. Belgium takes back six mothers, 10 children from Syria

• Ten Belgian children and six mothers have been recovered from a prison camp for captured jihadists in Syria and flown home to Belgium, the government said on July 17, 2021.
• The operation was the biggest such repatriation since the battlefield defeat of the militant Islamic State group in 2019, and follows Belgium`s decision to secure the return of under12s.
• The adult mothers were taken into custody on their return to Belgium late on Friday, and child protection authorities will interview the minors and assign them to social services

• The Cannes film festival ended on July 17, 2021 in the south of France with the awarding of its top prize, the Palme d`Or.

9. Actress Nyla Jaffri passes away

• Renowned television and theatre actress Nyla Jaffri passed away here on July 17, 2021. She was 56.
• She was battling cancer for quite a few years. In order to recuperate she stayed in Gilgit for some time but returned to Karachi where she breathed her last.
• Nyla Jaffri received her early education in Rawalpindi. She began working in plays from Rawalpindi Television Station but in the 1980s her family shifted to Karachi


10. Lewis powers West Indies past Australia in final T20

• Opener Evin Lewis was at his rampaging best with a blazing knock of 79 in setting the West Indies on their way to a 16-run victory over Australia in the final Twenty20 International of their five-match series at the Darren Sammy National Cricket Stadium in St Lucia on July 17, 2021.
• Lewis` punishing innings off just 34 balls, highlighted by nine sixes and four fours, lifted the home team to 199 for eight and earned him the player-of-the-match awards as the hosts also took the series by a convincing 4-1 margin.
