1. Kabul recalls ambassador, diplomats from Islamabad

• Afghanistan on July 18, 2021 called back its ambassador and senior diplomats from Pakistan after the reported abduction and release of the Afghan envoy`s daughter in the federal capital.
• While Pakistan has termed the Afghan government`s decision `unfortunate`, `regrettable` and `disappointing` Foreign Minister Shah Mahmood Qureshi has expressed the hope that the Afghan authorities would review their stance as Pakistan has assured the ambassador of full cooperation in the investigation


2. Pakistan ranks 30th after recording 15,000 virus cases in a week

• With over 15,000 more cases of coronavirus being reported over the past one week, Pakistan has been ranked 30th among the countries having detected most number of cases since the outbreak of the Covid-19 pandemic according to global ranking.
• So far, the country has reported a little less than a million cases (i.e. 989,275) including 22,781 deaths, while India has reported the second highest number of cases (over 31 million) after the US where over 34m cases have been detected.
• While observing that the Covid-19 situation is worsening in Pakistan with a resurge in cases, the Pakistan Medical Association in a statement noted that the worst of all was the presence of Delta variant in a number of cases and once again requested the masses to follow coronavirus-related standard operating procedures (SOPs).


3. Pakistan completes its Ecosoc presidency

• Pakistan completed its presidency of the UN Economic and Social Council (Ecosoc) this week, successfully pushing for a consensus on debt relief and restructuring during its tenure.
• Eighteen new members were elected on July 18, 2021 into the Ecosoc coordinating body for the economic and social work of UN agencies and funds, for a three-year term.
• Ecosoc has 54 members, which are elected each year by the General Assembly for overlapping three-year terms. Seats on the council are allocated on the basis of geographical representation. Pakistan completed its tenure on Friday


4. Nazar Mohammad Baloch takes oath as Balochistan ombudsman

• The newly appointed ombudsman of Balochistan, Advocate Nazar Mohammad Baloch, has taken the oath of his office.
• The Governor of Balochistan, Syed Zahoor Ahmad Agha administered the oath to the new ombudsman at a ceremony held at Governor House on July 18, 2021.


5. Taliban leader `favours political settlement` of conflict

• The supreme leader of Taliban said on July 18, 2021 he `strenuously favours` a political settlement to the conflict in Afghanistan, even as the Islamist movement pushes a sweeping offensive across the nation.
• Haibatullah Akhundzada`s announcement came as representatives of the insurgents and the Afghan government sat down for a new round of talks in Qatar, stirring dim hopes for a revival of long-stalled peace talks.
• `In spite of the military gains and advances, the Islamic Emirate strenuously favours a political settlement in the country,` Akhundzada said in a statement ahead of next week`s holiday of Eidul Azha


6. Ethiopia`s Tigray war spills into other regions

• Rebels in Ethiopia`s war-hit Tigray have carried out operations against pro-government troops in neighbouring Afar region, opening a new front in the widening eight-month conflict.
• The `very limited action` targeted special forces and militia fighters from Oromia region, Ethiopia`s largest, who were massing along the Tigray-Afar border, the rebel spokesman, Getachew Reda, said.
• `We took those actions to ensure those forces are sent back to Oromia, and we have managed to do that,` Getachew said, adding that there were some casualties but he could not provide figures.


7. Tensions flare up as Israeli govt allows Jews into Al Aqsa compound

• Israeli police clashed with Muslim protestors on July 18, 2021 at a flashpoint Jerusalem Old City shrine as Jews were headed there to mark a religious holiday, police said.
• The tensions and the Jewish pilgrimage to the highly sensitive Al Aqsa mosque compound, known to Jews as the Temple Mount, were condemned by the Palestinians.
• Israel`s right-wing nationalist Prime Minister Naftali Bennett stood by the state`s decision to allow Jews to visit the site


8. Top oil producers agree on modest output boost

• The world`s leading oil producers agreed on July 18, 2021 to continue to modestly boost output from August reaching a compromise after the United Arab Emirates blocked a deal earlier this month.
• An OPEC+ meeting decided to raise output by 400,000 barrels per day (bpd) each month from August to help fuel a global economic recovery as the pandemic eases, the group`s Vienna-based secretariat said in a media statement.
• The grouping will `assess market developments` in December, it said.
• The deal also extends a deadline on capping output from April next year to the end of 2022.


9. Turkey condemns EU court ruling on headscarf ban

• Turkey on July 18, 2021 slammed a ruling by a top European Union court allowing the banning of headscarves under certain conditions as a `clear violation of religious freedoms`, adding the move would exacerbate prejudices against Muslim women in Europe.
• The Luxembourg-based EU Court of Justice (CJEU) ruled on Thursday that companies in the bloc can ban employees from wearing a headscarf under certain conditions, if they need to do so to project an image of neutrality to customers


10. Moeen, Rashid shine as England level T20 series

• England`s stand-in skipper Jos Buttler top-scored with 59 before their spinners Adil Rashid and Moeen Ali ripped through the Pakistan batting unit to seal a 45-run win in the second Twenty20 International and level the series at 1-1 on Sunday.
• Chasing 201 runs to win at Headingley, Pakistan`s openers made a bright start with the bat but lost their way after England fast bowler Saqib Mahmood dismissed captain Babar Azam (22) in the sixth over.
• England tightened their grip in the middle overs as leg-spinner Rashid removed Mohammad Rizwan and Sohaib Maqsood in his second spell
