1. In a first, all provinces get one woman district poll commissioner

• Days after the announcement of delimitation schedule for local government polls in Punjab and Khyber Pakhtunkhwa, a massive shake-up in the Election Commission of Pakistan (ECP) has redeployed dozens of its officers.
• A significant feature of the reshuffle is that all the four provinces will now have at least one woman district election commissioner (DEC) for the first time in the country`s history.
• Those transferred and posted include four female officers one each from the four provinces.

2. Army says no new deployment made along LoC in GB

• The military on July 2, 2020 said it had neither made new deployments along the Line of Control (LoC) in Gilgit Baltistan nor were there any Chinese soldiers in Pakistan.
• The military`s public affairs wing, Inter-Services Public Relations (ISPR), made this assertion in response to claims in Indian media that Pakistan had deployed 20,000 additional troops along the LoC in GB in the backdrop of the India China tensions.
• The reports in the Indian media were attributed to unnamed sources.

3. Pakistan rejects allegation of `exporting` virus

• Special Assistant to the Prime Minister (SAPM) on National Security Dr Moeed Yusuf on July 2, 2020 categorically rejected the allegation that Pakistan has exported the novel coronavirus to different countries, including the United Kingdom, and said any attempt to single out Pakistan would not be allowed.
• At a media briefing, he also advised people to behave sensibly and not to travel to Europe without getting Covid-19 test done as it would put the reputation of Pakistan at stake. They should also avoid travelling unnecessarily, he added.
• Dr Yusuf said there were some instances in which people got themselves tested at unauthorised labs and were found to be negative. However, they tested positive after reaching some countries.

4. 4 parliamentary groups formed for police reforms

• Sustainable Social Development Organization (SSDO), under a pilot project of United States Institute of Peace (USIP), on July 2, 2020 formed four parliamentary working groups to bring reforms in the police department by introducing modern research mechanism and making necessary legislation.
• “Four parliamentary groups consist of members from National Assembly (NA) and Senate, Punjab, Sindh and Khyber Pakhtunkhwa (KP) assemblies,” said SSDO Executive Director Syed Kausar Abbas.
• The SSDO would assist the parliamentarians in evaluation of existing laws, police reform and research methodologies, under the project “Police Awam Saath Saath” (Police & Public Side By Side), he said.

5. Caretaker CM GB allots portfolios to newly appointed cabinet members

• Caretaker Chief Minister Gilgit-Baltistan Mir Afzal Khan has allotted portfolios to the newly appointed cabinet members.
• The services and general administration issued notification on July 2, 2020 in this regard.
• According to notification portfolios of Ministers are following. Aftab Ismail Khan Minister Planning and Development, Syed Sarwar Shah, Forest and Information, Shaukat Rashid works, Sheikh Nasir Hussain agriculture, livestock and fisheries. Muhammad Ali Khan, excise taxation and social welfare. Muhammad Yasin law and justice, Syed Shabiul Hasnain local government and rural development, Muhammad Ali Quaid minerals industries and commerce, Johar Ali, Water and Power, Dr Rajab Ali food, Imam Yar Baig health and Abdul Jehan, education. Waqar Abbas will serve as Advisor to CM on Finance and Samina Baig advisor to CM on tourism, sports and culture.

6. Shahzad Qasim made advisor to PM

• Prime Minister of Pakistan has re-designated Shahzad Syed Qasim as Special Assistant to the Prime Minister on Power Division and Coordination of Marketing & Development of Mineral Resources.
• According to a notification issued here July 2, 2020, Shahzad will hold the status of minister of state. With the appointment of Shahzad Syed Qasi as advisor, the total number of the special assistants to prime minister is now 15

7. Russians back changes allowing Putin to rule until 2036

• The Kremlin said on July 2, 2020 Russians had shown how much they trusted President Vladimir Putin with a nationwide vote that gave him the right to run for two more terms while people wondered whether he really would stay on until 2036.
• Announcing final results of the week-long vote, officials said nearly 78 percent of voters had backed changes to the constitution allowing Putin, whose fourth term as president ends in 2024, to run for two more back-to-back six-year terms.
• That means that the 67-year-old former KGB officer, who has ruled Russia for over two decades as either president or prime minister, could be in power until he is 83.

8. Taking EU helm, Germany`s Merkel calls on Europe to show resolve

• German Chancellor Angela Merkel has urged European Union leaders to reach agreement on a multi-billion euro coronavirus recovery fund, calling for resolve and saying Europe was facing the most difficult situation in its history.
• Echoing Merkel`s urgency as Germany took the helm of the bloc, the EU`s chief executive Ursula von der Leyen joined the chancellor via video link to warn that the next six months were crucial after the region reacted slowly to the coronavirus and now faced a severe economic downturn.
• `We are clear where the difficulties are but we all know it would be good if we agree in July. If we need more time it would be a less good variant,` Merkelsaid, also referring to plans for the new seven-year EU budget.

9. Unpopular New Zealand health minister quits after COVID lapse

• New Zealand’s health minister resigned July 2, 2020 after a public backlash over his breach of lock down and his criticism of the civil servant responsible for the country’s world-leading coronavirus response.
• Outgoing minister David Clark was already under a cloud after breaking lockdown in April and Prime Minister Jacinda Ardern, who faces an election in September, admitted his presence had become a distraction. “It’s essential our health leadership has the confidence of the New Zealand public,” she said.
• “As David has said to me, the needs of the team must come before him as an individual.”

10. Waseem, Asif appointed KSF president, chairman

• The Executive Committee of Karachi Sports Forum (KSF) appointed Syed Waseem Hashmi as president of the Forum for the tenure of next four years while Asif Azeem and Murad Hussain will work as Chairman and general secretary, respectively.
• The other office-bearers named on Thursday include Tehmina Asif as senior vice-president, Syed Mukhtar Ahmed and Zeeshan Merchant as vice-presidents, Syed Faig Rizvi as joint secretary, Muhammad Nasir as secretary finance while Masroor Ali Zaidi, Muhammad Tariq, Khaldoon Raja, Faraz Aljaz and Muhammad Ali are members executive committee.
