1. Govt plans to use locusts for developing bio-compost

• The government is in the process of approving a project to use the millions of locusts that have invaded farmlands for developing bio-compost with a view to promoting organic farming in the country.
• The pilot testing of the project will be carried out in Cholistan and Thar, and if 10 per cent of population in the two areas becomes active, the ministry of national food security and research expects a force of 222,000 people in local community would be available to combat the attack of desert locusts.
• The ministry expects that the project will result in protection of biodiversity and full mobilisation of the local community to develop well-informed system to protect 23.6 million hectares of cropped area.


2. International mail delivery service begins

• Pakistan Post has started delivering international mail through Express Mail Service (EMS) Plus.
• Responding to customers` complaints, Pakistan Post decided to restore the service while alternative measures for international registered letters, EMS and parcel service are also being considered. Customers were facing difficulty in delivery of mail abroad.
• On the directive of Pakistan Post`s director general, EMS Plus has been made fully operational, for timely delivery of international mail through alternative means of transportation.


3. Former Federal Minister Durrani passes away

• A senior leader of the Pakistan Peoples Party and former federal minister, Dr Ayatullah Durrani, passed away on July 5, 2020.
• Family sources said Dr Durrani fell ill last week and was taken to the Fatima Jinnah Chest Hospital and remained under treatment there.
• `He was not suffering from coronavirus, hospital sources said.
• Dr Durrani was the general secretary of Balochistan PPP. He served as a minister of state for industries and production after being elected MNA in the 2008 general election on a PPP ticket.


4. $60m IsDB aid for polio eradication approved

• The Islamic Development Bank (IsDB) has approved a $60 million supplementary fund to Pakistan as a further contribution to the polio eradication programme.
• This includes a $39m Islamic Development Bank Murabaha and a $21m grant from the IsDB-managed Lives and Livelihoods Fund (LLF). The new financing has been approved by the IsDB Board of Executive Directors at the virtual meeting held in Jeddah chaired by IsDB President Dr Bandar Hajjar early this week.
• As the Islamic bank had previously contributed $100m to the same project the new supplementary funding takes its total contribution up to the $160m mark.


5. Tokyo governor wins 2nd term, buoyed by handling of virus

• Tokyo Govornor Yuriko Koike has won a second term to head the Japanese capital, propelled to an election victory on July 5, 2020 by public support for her handling of the coronavirus crisis despite a recent rise in infections that has raised concerns of a resurgence of the disease.
• In her victory speech, Koike, the first woman to lead Tokyo, pledged to continue to take measures to protect the city`s 14 million people amid the pandemic, calling it her most pressing task.
• Now is a very important time to prepare for a possible second wave, and I will continue to firmly take steps, she said


6. Iran negotiating strategic accord with China

• Foreign Minister Mohammad Javad Zarif said on July 5, 2020 that Iran has been negotiating a 25-year accord with China whose terms will be announced once a deal is struck.
• `With confidence and conviction, we are negotiating a 25-year strategic accord with China,` Iran`s top trading partner, he told a stormy session of parliament.
• China is also a key market for Iranian crude exports, which however have been dampened by US sanctions imposed after Washington`s 2018 withdrawal from a nuclear deal with Tehran.


7. US race protesters pull down Columbus statue

• Protesters in the US city of Baltimore pulled down a statue of Christopher Columbus on July 5, 2020, local media reported, the latest monument to be toppled in anti-racism demonstrations.
• Statues of figures connected to colonialism and slavery have been ripped from their plinths in the United States and around the world since Black Lives Matter protests were sparked by the killing of George Floyd by a white police officer in Minneapolis in May.
• Footage published by the Baltimore Sun showed protesters using ropes to pull down the statue of Columbus the Italian navigator who reached the Americas in 1492 near the city`s Little Italy district and rolling it into the Inner Harbour on the night of July 4.


8. Two French ex-spies on trial over espionage charge for China

• In a case that could be from a spy thriller, two former French intelligence agents go on trial on Monday accused of having passed on secrets to a foreign power.
• While French officials have been at pains to avoid releasing details of the affair, the pair are accused of working for China, according to several media reports.
• Pierre-Marie H. and Henri M. will appear in a special court accused of `delivering information to a foreign power` and `damaging the fundamental interests of the nation`.
• Both men worked for France`s foreign intelligence service, the DGSE.
• They face 15 years in prison if convicted


9. De Kock named SA cricketer of year for second time

• Limitedovers captain Quinton de Kock was on July 5, 2020 named South Africa`s men`s cricketer of the year for the second time.
• The left-handed de Kock, 27, was comfortably South Africa`s best batsman in a year in which the national team won only one out of seven series across all formats. The wicket-keeper/batsman was his team`s leading run-scorer in Eve out of seven series and was the team`s top scorer in nine out of 27 innings.
• De Kock was previously South Africa`s cricketer of the year in 2017.


10. Mercedes` Bottas wins season-opening Austrian GP

• Valtteri Bottas won a chaotic season-opening Austrian Grand Prix on July 5, 2020 while Formula One champion Lewis Hamilton finished fourth after getting a late time penalty.
• The race was interrupted three times by a safety car and nine of 20 drivers abandoned, including both Red Bulls of Max Verstappen and Alexander Albon who tried to overtake Hamilton on the outside with 10 laps left, touched wheels and flew off track.
• Hamilton was given a five-second time penalty for causing the collision, having earlier been hit with a three-place grid penalty after an incident in Saturday`s qualifying was reviewed by stewards.
