1. NA to host 1st Executive Committee Meeting of Pakistan-Afghanistan Parliamentary Friendship Group

• National Assembly of Pakistan will host the inaugural meeting of the Executive Committee of the Pakistan- Afghanistan Parliamentary Friendship Group (PFG) in the National Assembly July 8, 2020.
• The meeting will be attended by key Ministers of the Cabinet, parliamentarians, Advisors & Special Assistants to the Prime Minister, Pakistan’s Special Envoy to Afghanistan and relevant Federal Secretaries on the invitation of the Speaker of the National Assembly, Asad Qaiser.
• The meeting will seek to complement the democratic vision of the elected house to promote parliamentary role in deepening bilateral relationship with Afghanistan.


2. Arshad Malik to continue as PIA chief after retirement from PAF on 12th

• The federal cabinet on Tuesday approved continuation of service of Chief Executive Officer of the Pakistan International Airlines Air Marshal Arshad Malik even after his retirement from the Pakistan Air Force on July 12.
• The cabinet approved the appointment of Mr Malik as the PIA CEO for a period of three years on a deputation basis and he has completed two years of his service as head of the national flag carrier. Since Mr Malik is retiring from the PAF, he will now serve as the PIA head on a contractual basis.
• When contacted by Dawn, a cabinet member confirmed that Mr Malik would continue to serve as PIA`s chief executive after his retirement from PAF.


3. Legislation empowers CM to appoint, remove MTI board members

• The Khyber Pakhtunkhwa Assembly on July 7, 2020 hastily passed a bill for making drastic changes to a health reforms law empowering the chief minister to appoint and remove members of the board of governors of medical teaching institutions in the province.
• The KP Medical Teaching Institutions Reforms (Amendment) Bill, 2020, also provides for the establishment of an appellate tribunal to decide legal matters about MTIs.
• The opposition members flayed legislation without debate.


4. DC withdraws 122 fake domiciles in verification

• Deputy Commissioner (DC) Quetta Aurangzaib Badini on July 7, 2020 said at least 122 domiciles obtained from Quetta were canceled on the basis of forgery so far while the process of verification domiciles of employees posted in the federal department on the quota of Balochistan were being continued.
• He expressed these views while talking to a delegation of journalists called on him at his Office, said the investigation of other domiciles was underway and in this regard, data of persons working in federal departments was being collected on the domiciles certificate of Quetta for the interest of educated youth of the province.
• However, Deputy Commissioner (DC) Mastung Mehboob Ahmed Achakzai had canceled fake domiciles of 400 persons after conducting scrutiny.


5. AIDS-related deaths on the rise in Pakistan

• The United Nations Aids Control Programme says AIDS-related deaths are rising in Pakistan as late diagnosis and poor adherence to treatment are missed opportunities to prevent onward transmission and related mortalities.
• According to the `Global AIDS Update 2020` published on July 7, 2020, the UNAIDS says HIV infections in Asia and the Pacific have declined slightly with reductions in Cambodia, Myanmar, Thailand and Vietnam. But it sees sharp increase in infections in Pakistan and the Philippines.
• The 29 per cent reduction in AIDS related deaths since 2010 speaks to successful testing and treatment programmes in several countries, such as Australia, Cambodia and Thailand which have achieved 90-90-90 targets, but AIDS-related mortality rates are rising in Pakistan, Afghanistan and the Philippines


6. Saudi Arabia opens Hajj registration for foreign residents

• Saudi Arabia’s Ministry of Hajj and Umrah opened registration for those wishing to perform Hajj this year through its website.
• Out of the total 10,000 pilgrims, 70 percent will be foreigners residing in the Kingdom, with Saudis making up the remaining 30 percent.
• Saudi Arabia has decided to allow only 10,000 domestic pilgrims to perform Hajj this year in the wake of the outbreak of the coronavirus pandemic, Saudi Gazette reported.


7. Dubai reopens doors to tourists after long shutdown

• With a `welcome` passport sticker and coronavirus tests on arrival, Dubai reopened its doors to international visitors on July 7, 2020 in the hope of reviving its tourism industry after a nearly four month closure.
• But businesses are mainly betting on those already living in the gleaming desert city to energise its ailing economy and serve as a test run before wary foreign holidaymakers return.
• `A warm welcome to your second home,` says the sticker applied to passports at Dubai airport, where employees wear hazmat suits and vending machines offer personal protective equipment.


8. US killing of top Iranian general unlawful: UN expert

• The US drone strike that killed Iran`s top general Qasem Soleimani was `unlawful`, the United Nations expert on extrajudicial killings concluded in a report released on July 7, 2020.
• Agnes Callamard, the UN special rapporteur on extrajudicial, summary or arbitrary executions, concluded it was an `arbitrary killing` that violated the UN charter.
• The US had provided no evidence that an imminent attack against US interest was being planned, she wrote.


9. Egypt, France, Germany, Jordan warn Israel over annexation

• The foreign ministers of Egypt, France, Germany and Jordan on July 7, 2020 urged Israel to abandon plans to begin annexing settlements in the West Bank, warning such action could have “consequences” for relations.
• “We concur that any annexation of Palestinian territories occupied in 1967 would be a violation of international law and imperil the foundations of the peace process,” the ministers said in a statement after a joint video conference.
• The government of Israeli Prime Minister Benjamin Netanyahu had set July 1 as the date when it could begin to annex Jewish settlements in the West Bank as well as the strategic Jordan Valley.


10. New era for cricket as England, WI clash in first Test

• International sport finally returns to Britain on July 8, 2020 when England take on the West Indies in the world`s first cricket Test match since the start of March because of the novel coronavirus (Covid-19) pandemic.
• Its clear the match being staged at the Ageas Bowl in Southampton is about much more than just cricket. A smoothly run Test series played in a strict isolated environment featuring repeated Covid-19 testing and social distancing can lay the blueprint for future matches and tours in cricket but also events in other sports targeting a resumption.
• `If you get one thing wrong, it might blow this whole getting sport back onto the radar further back,` England stand-in captain Ben Stokes said on Tuesday in his eve-of-game news conference
