1. NA takes up anti-terror financing bills today

• The National Assembly is set to begin on July 13, 2020 (today) a debate on the privatisation policy of the government besides taking up two crucial bills seeking amendments to the antiterrorism act to fulfil international commitments and certain requirements of the Financial Action Task Force (FATF) when the lower house will resume its session after a two day recess.
• According to the 22-point agenda issued by the National Assembly Secretariat for the sitting, Minister for Interior retd Brig Ijaz Shah will move the two bills seeking amendments to sections 2, 6, 9A and 110 in the Anti-Terrorism Act (ATA) 1997 and insertion of a new section 11000 in it before the house for passage.


2. Four terrorists killed in North Waziristan

• Four terrorists were killed during an intelligence-based operation in the Miranshah area of North Waziristan tribal district on July 12, 2020.
• Four soldiers embraced martyrdom while three personnel suffered injuries during the operation.
• The Inter-Services Public Relations (ISPR), the media affairs wing of the military, confirmed the incident. In a brief statement, the ISPR said that four terrorists were killed during an intelligence-based operation (IOB) in Vezhda Sar, some eight kilometres southwest of the Boya area in Miramshah.


3. Govt`s offer for investors to whiten black money

• Federal Minister for Information and Broadcasting Senator Shibli Faraz on July 12, 2020 asked investors to turn their black money into white by investing in the construction industry during a recess in international obligations that will last till Dec 31 this year.
• `Investors have a chance to turn their black money into white by initiating construction projects before Dec 31,` he said while speaking at a joint press conference along with Naya Pakistan Housing Authority (NPHA) chief Lt Gen Anwar Ali Haider.
• He said there was a recess in international obligations before Dec 31 this year, and during that period there was an incentive for investors to invest their money in the construction sector as in that period their sources of income would not be asked


4. AJK police to present guard of honour to Kashmiri martyrs today

• For the first time in the history of Azad Jammu and Kashmir (AJK), police would present a guard of honour on July 13, 2020 (today to 22 Kashmiris who were martyred 89 years ago during a protest against the autocratic rule of a Hindu Maharaja in the Muslim majority state.
• According to an official statement, the guard of honour to be followed by speeches by Prime Minister Raja Farooq Haider and others would be part of the main ceremony scheduled to be held on the premises of the PM Secretariat to mark the Kashmir Elsewhere, rallies, seminars and webinars would also be held in AJK and Pakistan to observe the day with full fervour and renewed pledge to continue to support the just struggle of the Kashmiri people.
• It was on July 13, 1931, when tens of hundreds of Kashmiris had gathered outside the premises of Central Jail in Srinagar where Abdul Qadeer, a resident of British India, was being tried on the charge of sedition, for inciting Kashmiris against the Dogra ruler at a gathering in Khangah-i-Muallah on June 21, the same year.


5. Pakistan Post issues stamp on World Population Day

• Pakistan Post has issued a commemorative postage stamp in connection with World Population Day at the request of the United Nations Population Fund and Population Council.
• The image on the stamp shows a beam scale, symbolising the importance of balance in a society; individuals are shown on the left plate of the scale and emblems of essential resources needed by individuals including education, shelter, health, clean water and environment are shown on the right.
• The imagery is suggestive of a new global narrative on the population issue, which calls for creating balance between people and resources in a way that each individual`s fundamental rights are ensured. These rights include shelter, nutrition, healthcare, education, parental attention, According to a statement: `This year`s stamp identifies the impact of rapid population growth on the country`s resources


6. $200m WB aid likely to help Pakistan fight locusts

• The World Bank`s executive board will later this month approve assistance worth $200 million to help Pakistan control locust swarms, restore livelihoods in affected areas, and strengthen the country`s food security monitoring and management system.
• Out of the total project cost of $200m, $125m will be financed from the regional International Development Association (IDA), according to the project document made available to Dawn on Saturday.
• This would be the World Bank`s first agriculture project in Pakistan to work directly at the federal level with the Ministry of National Food Security and Research since 2010 when the 18th Amendment to the Constitution devolved agriculture and rural affairs to provinces


7. Britain pledges $890m to prepare post-BREXIT borders

• Britain on Sunday pledged 705 million ($890 million, 788 million euros) to prepare its borders for cutting ties with the European Union on December 31, amid concern within government that it is not ready.
• The money will fund new border posts, IT systems and 500 new staff to both ensure security and handle new customs controls after Britain leaves the EU`s single market and customs union, the government said in a statement.
• Britain ended its EU membership on January 31, almost four years after the historic Brexit vote, but agreed a standstill transition period until the end of the year while it tries to negotiate a new trade deal with Brussels


8. Disney World reopens despite Covid-19 cases rise in Florida

• As Florida posts the biggest surge of coronavirus cases in the country, Walt Disney World in Orlando opened to the public for the first time in four months and anti-mask activists held a rally at a nearby restaurant.
• Walt Disney Co welcomed a limited number of guests to its two most popular parks in Orlando on July 11, 2020 with a host of safety measures including masks and temperature checks.
• Coronavirus infections are rising in about 40 states, according to an analysis of cases for the past two weeks compared with the prior two weeks. Nationally, the United States has broken global records by registering about 60,000 new cases a day for the last four days in a row, according to a tally


9. Divided Poland votes in close presidential run-off

• Poles voted on Sunday in a razor edge presidential run-off election between a populist incumbent allied with US President Donald Trump and a europhile liberal challenger, with experts saying the result will define the future of the country`s young democracy.
• The stakes are high for Poland`s right-wing Law and Justice (PiS) party government, which has relied on incumbent President Andrzej Duda to endorse judicial reforms that have set Warsaw on a collision course with the EU over democratic standards just three decades after communism`s demise.
• Duda was struggling to beat Warsaw mayor Rafal Trzaskowski of the opposition Civic Platform (PO) as final opinion polls showed the two running neck and neck


10. Sudan reverses hardline Islamist policies

• Sudan will permit non-Muslims to consume alcohol and strengthen women`s rights, including banning female genital mutilation (FGM), its justice minister said late on July 12, 2020, in a reversal of almost four decades of hardline Islamist policies.
• About three percent of Sudan`s population is non-Muslim, according to the United Nations.
• Alcoholic drinks have been banned since former President Jaafar Nimeiri introduced Islamic law in 1983, throwing bottles of whisky into the Nile in the capital Khartoum.
