1. Construction sector gets Rs8 billion tax consessions

• The Khyber Pakhtunkhwa government has approved a Rs8 billion tax relief for the construction sector on property transfer.
• The documents show that under the tax relief package, 0.5 per cent registration fee on deeds and two per cent local council tax on the transfer of immovable property had been waived.
• Also, the province`s construction sector has got a special exclusion from sales tax on services like Punjab`s and a discounted rate of two per cent for all other activities under the same head.
• The relief package also includes zero percent capital value tax, which is already part of the Finance Act, 2020-21.


2. Govt approves Rs1.5 billion sales tax subsidy on locally manufactured tractors

• The government, under its Agricultural Fiscal Package, has approved Rs1.5 billion sales tax subsidy on locally manufactured tractors in order to promote mechanisation in agriculture sector to enhance per-acre crop output in the country.
• The government had announced a Fiscal Package of over Rs 1200 billion in the wake of Covid-19 Pandemic. Out of this package, an amount of Rs. 50 billion was earmarked for relief to agriculture sector. The Economic Coordination Committee (ECC), in its meeting held on 13-5-2020, approved the proposals submitted by Ministry of Food National Food Security and Research (NFS&R) and were ratified by the Cabinet vide Cabinet Division’s on 19th May, 2020


3. Govt servants banned to appear in media sans permission

• The federal government has banned appearance of government servants in electronic, print and social media without permission.
• The Establishment Division wrote a letter to all federal secretaries, additional secretaries (incharge) and chief secretaries to ban the appearance of government servants in electronic, print and social media without permission.
• The letter says, “Various instances have come to the notice of the Establishment Division that government servants participate in electronic, print and social media platforms to air their views on a variety of subjects.


4. Third China International Import Expo to be held in November

• The third China International Import Expo (CIIE) will be held as scheduled offline from November 5 to 10 in Shanghai amid the coronavirus pandemic, showing China’s determination to further open up, a CIIE Bureau official said.
• The event can also accelerate the recovery of the global economy, said Sun Chenghai, vice director of the CIIE Bureau, Global Times reported on July 25, 2020.
• Despite rising China-US tensions, the US multinationals still show willingness to expand in the Chinese market. Over 150 US companies including industrial leaders such as 3M, Qualcomm Technologies, Pfizer and Exxon Mobil Corp will participate in the expo, based on data released by the CIIE Bureau. More than 190 US firms attended the second CIIE. Despite the impact of the uncertainties between China and the US as well as the pandemic, many US firms still decided to take part in the event “as they trust the market potential and improved business environment in China,” Wang Xiaohong, professor at the China Center for International Economic Exchanges, told the Global Times


5. Attock admin signs MoU for digital town planning

• The Attock district administration on July 25, 2020 signed a memorandum of understanding (MoU) with a company for digital town planning and urban development of two towns of the district, and the project is expected to complete before December this year.
• Deputy Commissioner Attock Ali Annan Qammar on July 25, 2020 said that the company, `Sheher Saaz`, would provide free of cost consultancy services for town planning and urban development of Hassanabdal and Fatehjang towns of the district.
• The town planning includes roads, streets, sewerage and other infrastructure development for next 20 years.


6. Bangladesh signals shift towards China, Pakistan: report

• A prominent newspaper of Bangladesh has said Prime Minister Sheikh Hasina did not meet India`s high commissioner despite repeated requests for a meeting in the last four months, one of several signs of strained relations with New Delhi and a shift for closer ties with Pakistan and China.
• The Hindu quote à Bhorer Kagoj, a prominent daily, as reporting that all Indian projects have slowed down since the re-election of Prime Minister Hasina in 2019 with Chinese infrastructure projects receiving more support from Dhaka.


7. Highest temperatures for 40 years in Norwegian Arctic archipelago

• Norway`s Arctic archipelago Svalbard on July 25, 2020 recorded its highest temperature for over 40 years, almost equal to the all-time record, the country`s meteorological institute reported.
• According to scientific study, global warming in the Arctic is happening twice as fast as the rest of the planet.
• For the second day in a row, the archipelago registered 21.2 degrees Celsius (70.2 Fahrenheit) of heat in the afternoon, just under the 21.3 degrees recorded in 1979, meteorologist Kristen Gislefoss said.


8. Australia rejects Beijing`s South China Sea claims, backing US

• Australia has rejected Beijing`s territorial and maritime claims in the South China Sea in a formal declaration to the United Nations, aligning itself more closely with Washington in the escalating row.
• In a statement filed on Thursday, Australia said there was `no legal basis` to several disputed Chinese claims in the sea including those related to the construction of artificial islands on small shoals and reefs.
• `Australia rejects China`s claim to `historic rights` or `maritime rights and interests` as established in the `long course of historical practice`in the South China Sea,` the declaration read


9. Foreign students to be barred from entering US if courses online

• A week after revoking sweeping new restrictions on international students, federal immigration officials announced on July 25, 2020 that new foreign students would be barred from entering the United States if they planned to take their classes entirely online this fall.
• In a memo to college officials, US Immigration and Customs Enforcement said new students, who were not already enrolled as of March 9, would likely not be able to obtain visas if they intended to take courses entirely online. The announcement primarily affects new students hoping to enroll at universities that will provide classes entirely online as a result of the coronavirus pandemic.
• International students who are already in the US or are returning from abroad and already have visas will be allowed to take classes entirely online, according to the update, even if they begin instruction in-person but their schools move online in the face of a worsening outbreak.


10. 6,500 terrorists still active in Afghanistan: UN

• The United Nations has claimed that 6,000 to 6,500 terrorists of Pakistani origin are still operating in Afghanistan and use their bases to attack targets inside Pakistan.
• A new report prepared for the UN Security Council and released to the media covers global terrorist activities in 2019-20.
• It notes that while the Tehreek-i-Taliban Pakistan (TTP) continues to be the primary group with a focus on Pakistan, its members are also active in various terrorist outfits
