1. Taliban team meets Chinese officials to allay concerns

• A top-level Taliban delegation visiting China on July 28, 2021 assured Beijing the group would not allow Afghanistan to be used as a base for plotting against another country.
• The delegation is in China for talks with Beijing officials, as the insurgents continue a sweeping offensive across Afghanistan including in areas along their shared border.
• Their frontier is just 76 kilometres long and at a rugged high altitude without a road crossing but Beijing fears Afghanistan could be used as a staging ground for Uyghur separatists in Xinjiang


2. Record 778,000 people vaccinated in single day

• While Pakistan reported more than 4,100 cases after a gap of over two months and PML-N leader Maryam Nawaz became the latest victim of Covid-19, a record number of people i.e. 778,000 were vaccinated in a single day.
• Vice Chancellor of the University of Health Sciences Dr Javed Akram suggested that the pace of vaccination should be expedited to avoid chances of creation of vaccine-resistant virus. He warned that the situation would deteriorate in the coming days
• Meanwhile, highest positivity rate was reported in Karachi i.e. 22.6pc followed by Skardu, 19.88pc, and Gilgit, 18.42pc.


3. PNS Zulfiquar returns after participation in Russian parade

• Pakistan Navy Ship Zulfiquar returned to operational deployment after paying a successful visit to Saint Petersburg in Russia for participation in the 325th Russian Navy Day parade.
• During the ship`s stay at Saint Petersburg, Mission Commander and Commanding Officer called on the Commander of Leningrad naval base, Capt Saloshin Andrev, and Deputy Governor of External Relations Evgeny D. Grigoriev.
• During the meetings, matters of mutual interest were discussed. The dignitaries expressed enormous goodwill and warmth for Pakistan Navy and thanked it for its participation in the parade


4. Afghanistan will become `pariah state`, fears US

• Afghanistan would become a `pariah state` if the Taliban take control by force, US Secretary of State Antony Blinken said on July 28, 2021, as a top level delegation from the insurgent group visited China to assure officials of their international obligations.
• `An Afghanistan that does not respect the rights of its people, an Afghanistan that commits atrocities against its own people would become a pariah state,` Blinken told reporters in India.
• Blinken warned the Taliban they would have to change if they wanted global acceptance.


5. `Solastalgia` and `doomism`: new climate lingo boggles the mind

• One of the annoying things about global warming besides the likely hood it will ravage life on Earth -is all the new words we are expected to learn in order to track our descent into climate chaos.
• Rising temperatures have not only boosted the intensity or frequency of major storms and heatwaves, they have spawned rare or novel weather phenomena, accompanied by new more-or-less scientific names.
• `Firenados`, for example, occur when searing heat and turbulent winds rise above out-of-control forest fires in tornado-like columns.


6. US congressmen reach back into Cold War armoury to counter China

• Democratic and Republican congressmen on July 28, 2021 introduced a bill that aims to revive an arm of the old US Cold War arsenal to improve understanding of China and potentially other strategic rivals of the United States.
• The House bill introduced by Democratic Representatives Joaquin Castro and Bill Keating and Republicans Mike Gallagher and Brian Fitzpatrick would provide for the establishment of a federally funded Open Translation and Analysis Centre (OTAC) focused on China. It would be based on the Foreign Broadcast Information Service (FBIS), which provided translation and analysis of Soviet bloc and other foreign government media during the Cold War


7. Tunisia in turmoil as president fires more officials

• Tunisia lurched further into political uncertainty on July 28, 2021, as President Kais Saied sacked more officials, days after he suspended parliament and assumed executive powers in what opponents labelled a `coup`.
• Key civil society groups warned against any `illegitimate` extension of Saied`s 30-day suspension of parliament, and demanded in a joint statement a timeline for political action.
• After suspending parliament and sacking Prime Minister Hichem Mechichi on Sunday, and firing the defence and justice ministers on Monday, Saied then ordered the dismissal of several top officials


8. 39 foreigners, eight Pakistanis scale K2

• Forty-seven climbers, including eight Pakistanis, scaled K2, the world`s second highest mountain after Mount Everest, on July 27, 2021 and July 28, 2021.
• Pakistan`s Sajid Ali Sadpara, Canadian filmmaker Elia Saikaly and Nepal`s Pasang Sherpa climbed the 8,611-metre K2 on Wednesday morning.
• Sajid later secured the body of his father and noted climber, Mohammad Ali Sadpara, near the K2 Bottleneck and took it to Camp 4.
• Mohammad Ali had gone missing during an expedition last February along with John Snorri of Iceland and JP Mohr Prieto of Chile


9. Ledecky wins gold, Biles in second pull-out

• Katie Ledecky got her first gold medal of these Olympics, while Simone Biles pulled out of another event she came into the Games favoured to win.
• Ledecky bounced back from losses in her first two events in Tokyo to win the inaugural 1,500m freestyle for women by more than four seconds on Wednesday.
• The victory came about after Ledecky finished fifth in the 200m freestyle for her worst finish ever at an Olympics. Ledecky came into the Games with five gold medals but finished second to Australia`s Ariarne Titmus in the 400m free and then failed to medal in the 200m that Titmus also won.


10. Netherlands, China win in world best times on speedy day

• The Netherlands and China posted world best times to win gold in the men`s and women`s quad sculls races as Olympic rowing roared back into action at Tokyo`s Sea Forest Waterway on July 28, 2021.
• China clinched the women`s quad sculls in 6:05.13, more than six seconds ahead of silver medallists Poland and bronze winners Australia.
• On the men`s side, the Netherlands won gold one of four medals they picked up during the day`s competition in s:32.03, 1.72 seconds ahead of Britain`s crew, with Australia claiming bronze
