1. PM rules out use of force against Afghan Taliban

• Prime Minister Imran Khan has said his government can do everything to prod the Afghan Taliban to end violence and agree to a negotiated settlement of the dispute in their country except for coercive action against them on Pakistani territory.
• In a wide-ranging talk with a youth delegation from Afghanistan, which included media persons, on July 29, 2021, Mr Khan said: `We will do everything but we will not use military force anymore in Pakistan.
• He said that in his meetings with Afghan leaders he had gotten the impression that Kabul wanted Pakistan to take some sort of military action against the pro-Taliban and Taliban leaders living here


2. Governor rejects `controversial` privileges bill

• `Controversy` over the Provincial Assembly (Privileges) (Amendment) Bill 2021 that provides for punishment to a bureaucrat for breach of a privilege of the house, any of its committee or a member, has deepened as the Punjab and federal governments have `bowed down to the pressure exerted by the civil bureaucracy.
• Conceding to the pressure and recommendation of the Punjab and federal governments, the governor has rejected the Provincial Assembly (Privileges) (Amendment) Bill 2021 and returned it to the Punjab Assembly speaker for being in contravention of Article 66 (3) and Article 10-A of the Constitution. In its original form, the bill passed by the Punjab Assembly on June 29, also stipulated punishment to a journalist for breach of a privilege of the house, any of its committee or a member. However, the proposed action against journalists was withdrawn through an amendment moved in the Punjab Assembly following a massive protest demonstration organised by various journalist organisations


3. Pakistan, Bahrain sign MoU to promote bilateral businesses

• Pakistan and Bahrain have signed a memorandum of understanding to promote businesses between the two countries by working jointly towards economic growth and greater business harmony.
• The memorandum of understanding was signed between the Board of Investment (BoI) and the Bahraini Economic Development Board at the end of the second session of the Joint Ministerial Commission`s meeting in Manama.
• The MoU will remain enforced for two years with the option to be renewed subject to mutual approval by both parties, according to details announced by the Board of Investment on July 29, 2021


4. PM`s adviser Ishrat Hussain resigns

• Adviser to the Prime Minister on Institutional Reforms and Austerity Dr Ishrat Hussain has resigned from his post.
• Dr Hussain had sent his resignation letter to Prime Minister Imran Khan, but the reasons for the resignation were not known.
• Dr Hussain, who served as the governor of State Bank of Pakistan during the military regime of Gen Pervez Musharraf, did not respond to calls and messages of reporters who tried to contact him for seeking confirmation of reports about his resignation.


5. Pakistan`s regional exports rise 9pc in FY21

• Pakistan`s exports to nine regional countries posted growth of 9.14 per cent while imports grew by nearly 36pc in FY21 from a year ago, latest data released by the State Bank of Pakistan showed.
• The country`s exports to Afghanistan, China, Bangladesh, Sri Lanka, India, Iran, Nepal, Bhutan and the Maldives account for a small amount of $3.925 billion just 14.21pc of Pakistan`s total global exports of $25.304bn in FY21.
• China tops the list of countries in terms of Pakistan`s exports to its neighbours, leaving other populous countries India and Bangladesh behind. Pakistan carried out its border trade with the farther neighbour Nepal, Sri Lanka, Bhutan, Bangladesh and Maldives via sea only


6. Pakistan welcomes China`s engagement with Taliban

• The Foreign Office on July 29, 2021 welcomed China`s engagement with the Taliban, underscoring the importance of Beijing`s role in the Afghan peace process.
• `We believe that China being a neighbouring country to Afghanistan does have an important role to play in the Afghan peace process,` FO spokesman Zahid Hafeez Chaudhri said at his weekly media briefing.
• A nine-member Taliban delegation led by Mullah Abdul Ghani Baradar, the chief of the Afghan insurgent`s Doha-based political office, met Chinese Foreign Minister Wang Yi and other officials in Tianjin (China) on Wednesday


7. Delta variant driving virus surge in ME, says WHO

• The World Health Organisation said on July 29, 2021 the Delta variant has led to a `surge` in coronavirus outbreaks triggering a `fourth wave` in the Middle East, where vaccination rates remain low.
• The global health body said the highly transmissible strain, first detected in India, has been recorded in 15 out of the 22 countries and territories of the region under its purview, stretching from Morocco to Pakistan.
• `The circulation of the Delta variant is fuelling the surge in Covid-19 cases and deaths in an increasing number of countries in WHO`s Eastern Mediterranean Region,` it said in a statement


8. US wants Pakistan to play its vital role, says Blinken

• US Secretary of State Antony Blinken said on July 29, 2021 that Pakistan has a vital role in influencing the Taliban and the United States hopes that Islamabad plays that role.
• Secretary Blinken`s remarks, in an interview to various international television channels, come amid a key visit to Washington by Pakistan`s National Security Adviser Moeed Yusuf and the Director General of Inter-Services Intelligence, Lt. Gen. Faiz Hameed.
• `Pakistan has a vital role to play in using its influence with the Taliban to do whatever it can to make sure that the Taliban does not seek to take the country by force,` the top US diplomat told the Times of India channel. `And it does have influence, and it does have a role to play, and we hope that it plays it,` he added


9. Turkey courts Biden with Kabul airport offer

• Turkey is offering to protect Kabul`s strategic airport after US forces leave in what experts view as a high-risk bid to improve Ankara`s strained ties with Washington.
• Keeping the air hub safe from advancing Taliban forces became a major issue after US President Joe Biden called an end to Washington`s 20-year involvement by ordering all troops out of Afghanistan by the end of next month.
• Hamid Karzai International Airport offers the safest route for embassy staff and humanitarian aid to reach the war-torn country. Its fall could leave Afghanistan largely cut off from the world


10. Big day for Dressel and Chinese in pool, Lee in gymnastics

• Caeleb Dressel got his first individual gold medal, the Chinese women put together a record-setting relay and American Sunisa Lee won the women`s all-around gymnastics gold.
• After the biggest action of the day session on the sixth day of the Tokyo Olympics came at the pool, Lee shined at night in gymnastics with teammate Simone Biles watching from the stands.
• Lee, the youngest member of the team, became the fifth straight American woman to claim the Olympic title in the women`s all-around. She edged Rebeca Andrade of Brazil in an entertaining and hotly contested final
