1. 10,000 perform smallest Haj in memory

• Masked pilgrims scaled Mount Arafat on July 30, 2020 to pray and repent in the climax of this year`s Haj, the smallest in modern times because of coronavirus restrictions.
• A tight security cordon was erected all around the foot of the rocky hill outside Makkah, also known as Jabal al Rahma, or Mount of Mercy, for the high point of the Haj.
• Pilgrims, donning masks and observing social distancing as Saudi authorities enforce tough restrictions to prevent a coronavirus outbreak, embarked on the climb to the summit for Quranic recitals and prayers to atone for their sins

2. British Airways to start flight operation for Pakistan

• After Islamabad granted permission to the British Airways, the company announced on July 30, 2020 that it would resume its UK-Pakistan flight operation next month.
• The airline said it would start direct flights three times a week to and from London`s Heathrow Airport and Islamabad airport. The first flight will land in Islamabad on Aug 14. Extra precautionary measures will be taken for the safety of its crew and passengers.
• The announcement, it said, was another important step in reconnecting trade ties and people-to-people contact between the UK and Pakistan.

3. Second shipment of 100 ventilators arrives from US

• The second shipment of 100 respiratory ventilators has arrived from the United States and will be deployed in hospitals across the country to help the patients of coronavirus recover from the disease.
• The ventilators were delivered on President Donald Trump`s promise to Prime Minister Imran Khan to stand by the people of Pakistan and bring additional supplies and support to Pakistan`s response to the pandemic.
• The first shipment of 100 ventilators arrived on July 3 and they have already been delivered to hospitals and healthcare facilities throughout Pakistan.

4. Former envoy made BPSC chairman

• Former ambassador Abdul Salik Khan Yousafzal was appointed Balochistan Public Service Commission chairman for five years, it was officially announced in a notification issued by the Balochistan government on July 30, 2020.
• Mr Yousafzai belongs to Quetta and served on various positions in Pakistan`s embassies in Germany, Oman, Yemen, Kazakhstan, China and Indonesia.
• He was recently retired from the Ministry of Foreign Affairs in Grade 22.

5. Senate, NA pass time-bound FATF bills

• In a significant development towards meeting requirements of the global money laundering and terror financing watchdog, both houses of parliament on July 30, 2020 passed with some amendments two time-bound bills meant to pull Pakistan out of the grey list of the Financial Action Task Force (FATF).
• The Anti-Terrorism (Amendment) Bill, 2020, and the United Nations (Security Council) Amendment Bill, 2020, had been passed by the National Assembly on July 29, 2020, but the government`s bid to get the two bills passed by the Senate the same day had failed. Both the bills had been referred to the Senate`s Standing Committee on Law and Justice headed by Senator Javed Abbasi.
• The Senate panel met here prior to a Senate session and cleared the bills with amendments. Later, the upper house of the parliament passed the two bills. Hours after, the National Assembly also passed the bills

6. Pir of Golra Sharif passes away

• Prominent spiritual leader and Sajjada Nasheen of Golra Sharif Pir Syed Shah Abdul Haq Gilani passed away at the age of 94.
• He was the grandson of Pir Syed Mehr Ali Shah Gilani and son of Pir Syed Ghulam Mohiuddin Babu Ji Gilani.
• His funeral prayer was held on July 30, 2020 afternoon at Golra Sharif which was attended by a large number of followers and dignitaries of the city

7. States can restrict protests on health grounds, says UN

• Governments have the right to restrict protests on public health grounds, within reason, the UN Human Rights Committee said, as Black Lives Matter and other demonstrations clash with the coronavirus outbreak around the world.
• The committee stepped in to formulate its legal interpretation having seen a gap in the international norms being tested before the pandemic started, since when the matter has become more pressing.

8. Taiwan`s former president Lee Teng-hui dies

• Taiwan`s former president Lee Teng-hui, who defied China and earned the nickname `Mr Democracy` for the part he played in the island`s transition away from authoritarian rule, died on Thursday aged 97.
• He was credited with paving the way for Taiwan to become a modern, free society after decades of one-party dictatorship and became a champion of the island`s bid to be treated as a sovereign state internationally.
• Lee had been in hospital since February after choking on some food and had a history in recent years of chronic illnesses

9. Mars rover launched to look for signs of past life

• Nasa`s next-generation Mars rover Perseverance blasted off from Florida`s Cape Canaveral on July 30, 2020 atop an Atlas 5 rocket on a $2.4 billion mission to search for traces of potential past life on Earth`s planetary neighbour.
• The robotic rover a car sized six-wheeled vehicle carrying seven scientific instruments also is scheduled to deploy a small helicopter on Mars and try out equipment for future human missions to the fourth planet from the sun.
• Its arrival at Mars is planned for Feb 18 at the site of an ancient river delta.

10. Criminal case opened against FIFA president Gianni Infantino

• A criminal case against FIFA president Gianni Infantino was opened on July 30, 2020 by a Swiss special prosecutor, plunging world football`s governing body in a new scandal.
• Special prosecutor Stefan Keller has concluded there is enough evidence to take the case to court after investigating the circumstances of a meeting Infantino had with Swiss attorney general Michael Lauber, who offered his resignation last week.
• `Keller has uncovered elements that make up reprehensible behaviour, according to a statement from the Swiss authority overseeing the federal prosecutors office
