1. 55 perish as trains collide at dead of night

• At least 55 people were killed and over 150 others injured in twin accidents between Reti and Daharki railway stations where eight carriages of Millat Express derailed just before Sir Syed Express rammed into them in the wee hours of June 7, 2021 morning.
• Number of casualties is likely to climb up further with many passengers still trapped under the wreckage after daylong rescue operation.
• The twin accidents, Sir Syed Express`s collision with Sargodha-bound Millat Express shortly after the derailment of eight wagons of Millat Express, resulted in the suspension of train service, with authorities offering refund for seats booked in advance

2. Schools back to life after a long hiatus

• In-person teaching at educational institutes resumed across the province on Monday after the coronavirus cases declined after the third wave.
• The schools and colleges reopened all over Punjab except the Khanewal and Rahim Yar Khan districts where the ratio of coronavirus positive test results is over eight per cent. All schools, colleges and universities have started holding in-person classes with strict SOPs in place to keep the pandemic in check.

3. Pakistan challenges India`s plan to bifurcate occupied Kashmir

• Pakistan on June 7, 2021 said Indian actions in occupied Kashmir for perpetuating its control of the disputed region would be unlawful and vowed to continue challenging such moves.
• `No new instrument of occupation shall have any legal effect,` the Foreign Office (FO) said in a statement following reports of possible further bifurcation and demographic changes in the occupied territory.
• India had in 2019, after stripping occupied Jammu and Kashmir of its autonomous status, bifurcated it

4. Steam rises as India and Pakistan take basmati battle to EU

• From biryani to pilau, Pakistan and India`s shared culinary landscape is defined by basmati, a distinctive long-grain rice now at the centre of the latest tussle between the two rivals.
• India has applied for an exclusive trademark that would grant it sole ownership of the basmati title in the European Union, setting off a dispute that could deal a major blow to Pakistan`s position in a vital export market.
• `It`s like dropping an atomic bomb on us,` said Ghulam Murtaza, co-owner of Al-Barkat Rice Mills just south of Lahore.
• Pakistan immediately opposed India`s move to gain Protected Geographical Indication (PGI) from the European Commission.

5. US-Pakistan talks on military bases reach impasse: report

• The United States continues to focus on Pakistan for a military base in the region, although some American officials believe the negotiations have reached an impasse for now, The New York Times reported on June 7, 2021.
• The US intelligence agency CIA did use a base in Pakistan to launch drone strikes against militants but `was kicked out of the facility in 2011, when US relations with Pakistan unraveled,` the report adds.
• `Some American officials (told the newspaper) that negotiations with Pakistan had reached an impasse for now. Others have said the option remains on the table and a deal is possible,` the report explains.

6. N-arms spending swelled by $1.4bn amid pandemic: report

• Even as the pandemic raged and economies around the world were devastated, nuclear-armed countries last year increased spending on atomic weapon arsenals by 1.4 billion dollars, campaigners said on June 7, 2021.
• In a fresh report, the International Campaign to Abolish Nuclear Weapons (ICAN) detailed how the world`s nine nuclear-armed states continued to swell their spending on such weapons.
• `While hospital beds filled up with patients, doctors and nurses worked over hours and basic medical supplies ran scarce, nine countries found they had more than $72 billion on hand for their weapons of mass destruction,` the report said

7. Jeff Bezos to go to space on first Blue Origin flight

• Amazon founder Jeff Bezos announced on June 7, 2021 he will fly into space next month on the first human flight launched by his Blue Origin rocket firm.
• `Ever since I was five years old, I`ve dreamed of traveling to space. On July 20, I will take that journey with my brother, Bezos said on his Instagram account.
• Blue Origin said Bezos and his brother Mark will travel on the first crewed flight of the company`s New Shepard capsule

8. US approves first Alzheimer`s drug in almost two decades

• The United States on June 7, 2021 approved a drug called Aduhelm to treat patients with Alzheimer`s, the first new medicine against the disease in almost two decades and the first to address cognitive decline linked to the condition.
• The decision was highly anticipated but also contentious, because an independent expert panel convened by the regulatory Food and Drug Administration last November found insufficient evidence of Aduhelm`s benefit and recommended against approval

9. France fines Google 220m euros over dominance of online advertising

• France`s competition regulator on June 7, 2021 fined Google 220 million euros ($267 million) after finding it had abused its dominant market position for placing online ads, as US tech giants face growing pressure in Europe.
• The penalty is part of a settlement reached after three media groups News Corp, French daily Le Figaro and Belgium`s Groupe Rossel accused Google of effectively having a monopoly over ad sales for their websites and apps.

10. Cleric who helped found Hezbollah dies

• Ali Akbar Mohtashamipour, a cleric who as Iran`s ambassador to Syria helped found the Lebanese militant group Hezbollah and lost his right hand to a book bombing reportedly carried out by Israel, died on June 7, 2021 of the coronavirus. He was 74.
• A close ally of Iran`s late Supreme Leader Ayatollah Ruhollah Khomeini, Mohtashamipour in the 1970s formed alliances with Muslim militant groups across the Mideast.
• After the Islamic Revolution, he helped found the paramilitary Revolutionary Guard in Iran and as ambassador to Syria brought the force into the region to help form Hezbollah
