1. CIA chief told drone bases won`t be hosted

• Government officials have privately begun confirming a secret visit to Islamabad of CIA Director William Burns and are suggesting that he was firmly told that Pakistan would not host the spy agency`s drone bases on its territory.
• This comes after New York Times in an article published on June 6 claimed that Mr Burns had travelled to Pakistan for meetings with Army Chief Gen Qamar Javed Bajwa and ISI Director General Lt Gen Faiz Hamid to explore the possibility of counterterrorism cooperation between the two sides


2. Govt allocates $1bn for vaccine procurement

• Giving approval to allocation of $1 billion for vaccine procurement on June 8, 2021, Planning Minister Asad Umar said the National Economic Council (NEC) of the cabinet had decided to frequently hold its meetings every year for evaluation of not only the federal Public Sector Development Programme (PSDP) but also the provincial Annual Development Plans (ADPs)to ensure effective utilisation of public funds.
• Pakistan was initially depending on Covax, an international alliance which had pledged to provide free of cost Covid19 vaccine for 20 per cent population of the country. However, supply was delayed as India, which had to provide vaccine to Pakistan, decided to divert all supplies for local use


3. NA panel clears bill to amend Elections Act

• Amid a warning by the opposition against legislation in haste, a standing committee of the National Assembly on June 8, 2021 cleared a bill seeking to amend dozens of clauses of Elections Act, 2017.
• The NA Standing Committee on Parliamentary Affairs met for a second consecutive day with MNA Mujahid Ali in the chair. The panel appreciated government efforts to draw the attention of government functionaries to electoral reforms in order to ensure transparent and fair elections in future
• The proposed electoral reforms pertain to nomination fee for candidates of the national and provincial assemblies, delimitation, electoral rolls, open ballot for Senate elections, voting right for overseas Pakistanis and use of electronic voting machines in elections.


4. Persons with `mental disorder` allowed to open account

• The State Bank has provided a major facilitation to persons with `mental disorder` by allowing them to open bank accounts through a well denned account opening process.
• `For the first time in Pakistan, mentally disordered persons will be able to open a bank account under a new category of customers account namely `mentally disordered person account` introduced by the SBP in its Anti Money Laundering regulations,` said a press release issued by the SBP on June 8, 2021


5. Tariq Malik to again head Nadra

• The federal cabinet on June 8, 2021 approved the name of Tariq Malik, who is currently serving at the United Nations Development Programme (UNDP), for his appointment as National Database and Registration Authority (Nadra) chairman following a rigorous selection process.
• Mr Malik had served in Nadra in the past as well, while the UNDP had picked him from amongst 178 IT experts from across the world.
• The decision was made public by Minister for Information and Broadcasting Fawad Chaudhry at a press briefing on the weekly cabinet meeting


6. Pakistan sees lowest Covid positivity ratio

• As Pakistan records this year`s lowest positivity ratio of Covid-19, the National Command and Operation Centre (NCOC) on June 8, 2021 decided to intensify vaccination efforts by recommending the mechanism adopted for teachers` vaccination to all other ministries as well.
• Also, the Ministry of National Health Services (NHS) issued an advisory on Pfizer vaccine.
• In addition to vaccination efforts, the authorities also managed to boost the country`s testing capacity at the airports to ensure rapid antigen tests (RAT) of 100 per cent passengers


7. UN judges uphold conviction of Ratko Mladic

• United Nations war crimes judges on June 8, 2021 upheld a genocide conviction and life sentence against former Bosnian Serb military commander Ratko Mladic, rejecting all grounds of appeal against a lower tribunal`s verdict.
• Mladic, 78, led Bosnian Serb forces during Bosnia`s 199295 war. He was convicted in 2017 on charges of genocide, crimes against humanity and war crimes including terrorising the civilian population of the Bosnian capital Sarajevo during a 43-month siege, and the killing of more than 8,000 Muslim men and boys in the eastern Bosnian town of Srebrenica in 1995


8. Macron slapped in face during crowd stop

• French President Emmanuel Macron was slapped in the face while greeting a crowd in southeast France on June 8, 2021, a security scare that drew widespread condemnation ahead of regional elections this month.
• Video footage on social media showed Macron approach a barrier to meet and shake hands with voters, where a man in a green T-shirt took hold of his elbow and said a few words before slapping him.
• Macron`s bodyguards quickly intervened and two people were detained afterwards, local officials said.


9. UN Security Council backs Guterres for second term

• The United Nations Security Council backed Secretary General Antonio Guterres on June 8, 2021 for a second term, recommending that the 193-member General Assembly appoint him for another five years from Jan 1 of next year.
• Estonia`s UN Ambassador Sven Jrgenson, council president for this month, said the General Assembly was likely to meet to make the appointment on June 18


10. PSL 6 finally resumes with United, Qalandars set to do battle in searing Abu Dhabi heat

• After weeks of uncertainties amid a number of obstacles, the HBL Pakistan Super League (PSL)`s sixth edition is all set to recommence in the sweltering surroundings of Abu Dhabi following a three-month gap when two-time former champions clash with Lahore Qalandars at the Sheikh Zayed Stadium on June 9, 2021.
• When the competition at the National Stadium in Karachi was abruptly suspended over outbreak of coronavirus (Covid-19) cases among a handful of players and a support staff member in early March after completion of 14 fixtures, fears had began to generate whether there would by a conclusive finish to the glitzy franchise-based Twenty20 league
