1. Plasma therapy no cure for virus: ministry

• While illegal sale and purchase of convalescent plasma (CP)is going on across the country, the Ministry of National Health Services (NHS) on June 16, 2020 announced that plasma therapy should not be considered as a cure for coronavirus.
• The ministry warned that there could be serious side effects of plasma therapy, including febrile reactions [temperature increase and sometimes headache and back pain], allergic reactions, transfusion-associated circulatory overload, bronchospasm, transfusion related acute lung injury and transmission of diseases like HIV, hepatitis B and C and others.
• The country reported 5,090 Covid-19 cases and 117 deaths over the past 24 hours, taking the national tally of cases to 151,953 and deaths to 2,900.

2. `Smart lockdown` imposed on seven cities

• As per directions from the National Command and Operations Center (NCOC) on June 16, 2020, the Punjab government decided to partially impose `smart lockdown` on seven of its major cities Lahore, Rawalpindi, Faisalabad, Multan, Gujranwala, Sialkot, and Gujrat to arrest sharp increase in in fecdons.
• Lockdown in Lahore started immediately (Tuesday midnight) whereas other six cities will follow the suit by Wednesday (today) midnight. Police would be deployed at the entry and exit points of the areas to be placed under restrictions while Army and Rangers would be on standby.

3. Number of jobless people to reach 6.65m in 2020-21

• The number of unemployed people in the country has been estimated to reach 6.65 million during the fiscal year 202021, compared to 5.80m of the outgoing financial year.
• According to the government`s annual plan 2020-21, Pakistan has the 9th largest labour force in the world which is increasing every year.
• The number of employed workers will reach 62.91m in 2020-21 from 62.18m in 2019-20. According to the Labour Force Survey 2017-18, unemployment rate for the next year (2020-21) has been estimated at 9.56 per cent.

4. Lockdown extended for 15 days in Balochistan

• The Balochistan government has extended `smart lockdown`in the province for another 15 days.
• `Smart lockdown would continue till June 30 in Quetta and other parts of the province,` said a notification issued by the Home and Tribal Affairs Department here on Tuesday.
• Standard operating procedures (SOPs) and resections announced earlier for allowing business activities and resuming all kinds of transport will however remain in force, the notification said.

5. India gets a bloodied nose in clash with China

• Twenty Indian soldiers were killed in a violent face-off on the Chinese border, the Indian military said, following weeks of tensions and the deployment of extra troops from both sides.
• “A violent face-off took place yesterday (Monday) night with casualties. The loss of lives on the Indian side includes an officer and two soldiers,” an Indian army spokesman said in a statement.
• “Senior military officials of the two sides are currently meeting at the venue to defuse the situation.” An Indian army officer in the region said that there had been no shooting in the incident, on precipitous, rocky terrain in the strategically important Galwan Valley. “It was violent hand-to-hand scuffles,” the officer said on condition of anonymity

6. Moscow reopens museums and restaurants after two months

• Muscovites returned to museums and restaurant terraces on June 16, 2020 for the first time in more than two months as the Russian capital rolled back more coronavirus curbs despite still recording over 1,000 new infections daily.
• Libraries and zoos in the city of nearly 13 million people were also reopening, albeit with limits on numbers.
• Dentists were getting back to business too and sports events were allowed, though venues had 10pc capacity limits.

7. US to resume federal executions after 17 years

• The United States will resume federal executions on July 13, after a 17-year stay, the Justice Department.
• There have been just three federal execution since the death penalty was reinstated by the US government in 1988.
• Attorney General Bill Barr announced a year ago he intended to resume the use of the death penalty for federal crimes. Five convicted murderers were scheduled to undergo lethal injections in December 2019 and January of this year at the federal penitentiary in Terre Haute, Indiana

8. North Korea blows up office set up to improve ties with South

• North Korea blew up an office set up to foster better ties with South Korea on June 16, 2020 in a `terrific explosion` after threatening action if North Korean defectors went ahead with a campaign to send propaganda leanets into the North.
• North Korea`s state news agency KCNA said the liaison office in the border town of Kaesong, which had been closed since January due to the coronavirus, was `completely ruined`.
• Surveillance video released by South Korea`s defence ministry showed a large explosion that appeared to bring down the four-storey structure

9. 1 New method developed to study ‘traces’ at the Sun

• Scientists at Skolkovo Institute of Science and Technology (skoltech), together with colleagues from the Karl-Franzens University of Graz and the Kanzelhoehe Observatory (Austria) developed an automatic method for detecting “coronal dimmings,” or “traces” of coronal mass ejections at the Sun, and also proved that they are reliable indicators of the early diagnosis of powerful emissions of energy from the atmosphere of the Sun, traveling to Earth at great speed.
• Coronal mass ejections are among the most striking manifestations of solar activity. Huge plasma clouds pierced by magnetic lines are ejected from the atmosphere of the Sun into the surrounding space at speeds of 100-3500 km/s. If a stream of charged particles reaches the Earth, auroras and magnetic storms arise in its atmosphere. This can lead to serious problems in the operation of electrical equipment and signal loss, and spacecraft and astronauts in outer space are most exposed to danger. Coronal mass ejections occur in the atmosphere of the Sun, the solar corona, which is very sparse and does not shine as bright as the solar disk

10. Fossil discovered in 1960s finally reveals its secrets

• Antoine Champreux, a PhD student in the Global Ecology Lab at Flinders University, has catalogued the discovery of the new fern-like plant species as part of an international effort to examine the Australian fossil in greater detail.
• The fossil was found in the 1960s by amateur geologist Mr. John Irving, on the bank of the Manilla River in Barraba, New South Wales.
• The fossil was exposed after major flooding events in 1964, and Mr. Irving gave the fossil to the geological survey of New South Wales, where it remained for more than 50 years without being studied.
