1. Balochistan unveils Rs584.1bn budget

• Balochistan on June 18, 2021 proposed a Rs584.1 billion budget for the next fiscal year that carries a hefty development stimulus of Rs237.2bn and resource shortfall of Rs84.6bn amid rare violent protest by the opposition.
• Presenting the budget, Finance Minister Zahoor Ahmed Buledi said the government was presenting a `balanced budget` that focused on development of the province in spite of serious financial difficulties. He said the next year`s spending plan aimed at inclusive growth and development of backward areas.


2. GSP+ conventions to be fully enforced: FM

• Pakistan has reaffirmed its pledge to fully implement 27 international conventions as part of its commitment to the European Union`s preferential trade arrangement, the Generalised Scheme of Preferences Plus (GSP+).
• The commitment was conveyed twice this week first at the meeting of Pakistan-European Union Joint Commission held on Wednesday, but whose joint declaration was issued two days later, and during a meeting between Foreign Minister Shah Mahmood Qureshi and EU High Representative for Foreign Affairs and Security Policy Josep Borrell on the sidelines of the Antalya Diplomacy Forum in Turkey on June 18, 2021


3. Punjab passes Apprenticeship Act

• Punjab has become the first province to pass the `Apprenticeship Act 2021` to provide skilled youth with better economic opportunities to the industry according to its specifications.
• The government has replaced the 60-year old Apprenticeship Ordinance of 1962 by bringing fundamental changes from being applicable only to the manufacturing sector to now covering all sectors of the economy. The new law has also done away with time-consuming procedures for approvals related to apprenticeship program registration while it has also empowered provincial TVET Assessment bodies such as PBTE for examination on the footprint of CBT&A, an internationally recognized teaching and assessment system.


4. Senate body approves bill safeguarding rights of tenants, landlords

• The Senate Standing Committee on Interior on June 18, 2021 approved the Islamabad Rent Restriction Amendment Bill 2020 to protect the rights of tenants and landlords alike.
• The committee met at the old Pips Hall of Parliament Lodges with Senator Mohsin Aziz in the chair. The bill was moved by Senator Seemi Ezdi.
• Earlier, the bill was approved by National Assembly Standing Committee and then by the National Assembly. Subsequently, it was tabled before Senate which referred it to the committee. Now the bill will be placed before the Senate for final approval.


5. EU loses case for speedier AstraZeneca deliveries

• The European Union on June 18, 2021 lost its bid to speed up deliveries of AstraZeneca`s Covid-19 vaccines, the first of its legal challenges against the drug maker that rocked the bloc as it scrambled to shore up supplies.
• AstraZeneca said the EU had lost its legal case, but European Commission President Ursula von der Leyen said the court ruling supported its view that the Anglo-Swedish pharmaceutical giant had f ailed to honour its commitments.
• The row plunged the EU into crisis earlier this year as states, under pressure to speed up vaccinations, scrambled for shots


6. Guterres sworn in as UN chief for second term

• UN Secretary General Antonio Guterres was sworn in for a second term on June 18, 2021 as head of the world body, promising to draw on the lessons of the deadly Covid-19 pandemic.
• `Our greatest challenge and which is at the same time our greatest opportunity is to use this crisis to turn the tide, pivot towards a world that learns lessons,` the former Portuguese prime minister said as the General Assembly reappointed him for the 2022-2026 term


7. Swiss court jails former Liberian warlord for 20 years

• A former Liberian warlord was jailed for 20 years in Switzerland on June 18, 2021, becoming the first person from the country to be convicted of war crimes committed during the bloody conflict there a generation ago.
• In a ruling hailed as `historic`, Alieu Kosiah, 46, was found guilty of multiple atrocities committed during the first of Liberia`s back-to-back civil wars, in which about 250,000 people died between 1989 and 2003.
• Switzerland`s Federal Criminal Court in the southern city of Bellinzona said in a statement it had found Kosiah `guilty of violating the laws of war`


8. UN assembly calls for arms embargo against Myanmar

• In a rare move, the UN General Assembly on June 18, 2021 condemned Myanmar`s military coup and called for an arms embargo against the country in a resolution demonstrating widespread global opposition to the junta and demanding restoration of the country`s democratic transition.
• Supporters had hoped the 193-member world body would approve the resolution unanimously by consensus, but Belarus called for a vote. The measure was approved with 119 countries voting yes, Belarus voting no, and 36 countries abstaining


9. Displacement from war has doubled in a decade: UN

• Despite the coronavirus pandemic, the number of people fleeing war and persecution continued rising last year, with global displacement climbing to over 82 million double the figure a decade ago, the UN said on June 18, 2021.
• A fresh report from the UN refugee agency showed global displacement figures swelled by around three million in 2020 after an already record breaking year in 2019,leaving a full one per cent of humanity uprooted and displaced


10. Rampant Multan blow away Lahore to qualify for playoffs

• Lahore Qalandars` hopes of making the play offs of HBL Pakistan Super League 6 in Abu Dhabi almost vanished on Friday after they suffered a crushing 80-run defeat against a rampant Multan Sultans at the Sheikh Zayed Stadium.
• Multan, on the other hand, just couldn`t do anything wrong on a balmy night to seal their place in the playoffs after setting Lahore a tricky 179-run target. They needed only 15.1 overs to blow away their harried opponentsforjust89
