1. Rs923bn KP budget focuses on health, tax relief

• The Khyber Pakhtunkhwa government on June 19, 2020 unveiled the Rs923 billion budget for the financial year 2020-21 which focuses on improvement in the health sector and tax relief for businesses hit hard by the Covid-19 pandemic.
• KP Minister for Finance Taimur Saleem Jhagra presented the budget in the provincial assembly. He told Dawn that fundamentally the biggest challenge in the wake of Covid-19 was to anchor fixed costs of the government.
• He said the cost of unfunded pensions was huge; Rs86bn allocation for pension in 2020-21 was one per cent back in 2005 that has now risen to 15pc.


2. $1.5bn loan agreements signed to fight virus

• Prime Minister Imran Khan on June 19, 2020 witnessed the signing ceremony of $1.5 billion loan agreements with three international financial institutions for combating the Covid-19 crisis.
• According to the Prime Minister Office, the agreements were signed with the World Bank (WB), Asian Development Bank (ABB) and Asian Infrastructure Development Bank (AIIB).
• An agreement is related to Covid-19 Active Response and Expenditure Support Programme (CARES) amounting to $500 million: The ADB is extending $500m under the Covid-19 Active Response and Expenditure Support Programme aimed at supporting the Pakistan government`s efforts to strengthen the health system and mitigate socioeconomic impacts of the pandemic


3. International flights resume today

• The government has allowed resumption of international flight operations to and from all international airports in the country except Gwadar and Turbat airports from Saturday (June 20, 2020).
• Spokesman for the Aviation Division Abdul Sattar Khokhar said in a press release on Friday that the permission for international flight operations would be subject to restrictions and limitations as decided by the competent authority from time to time in the light of the current Covid-19 scenario and implementation of health protocols.
• Additionally, cargo, special and diplomatic flights would continue to be authorised as per procedure in vogue, the spokesman said


4. President appoints Prof Afzal as Comsats varsity rector

• President Dr Arif Alvi has appointed Prof Dr Mohammad Tabassum Afzal as the rector of Comsats University.
• The appointment was made on the basis of a summary submitted by the Ministry of Science and Technology, said a statement issued by the Presidency on June 19, 2020.
• The ministry had notified the appointment of the professor on April 30 but terms and conditions of the appointment were not approved by the president.


5. Emirates to resume flights to Dubai from Sialkot on June 24

• Emirates will resume scheduled flight services to Dubai from Sialkot on June 24. Flights from Karachi, Lahore and Islamabad to Dubai were resumed earlier by the airline.
• Asiatic Public Relations Network Senior Media Manager said in a press release on Friday that Emirates will serve all routes with its modern Boeing 777300ER aircraft, offering both economy and business class services. From Dubai, customers can connect to the airline`s current network of 40 destinations.
• On flights from Dubai to Pakistan, the airline will only carry cargo. Besides Sialkot, Emirates has also announced to resume scheduled services to nine more cities including Colombo (from June 20), Istanbul (from June 25), Auckland, Beirut, Brussels, Hanoi and Ho Chi Minh (all from July 1) and Barcelona, Washington DC (from July 15).


6. Pakistani among beneficiaries of US court ruling on immigrants

• The US Supreme Court has kept alive, for now, the Obama-era programme that allows immigrants brought here as children to work and protects them from deportation.
• The high court on June 18, 2020 ruled that the Trump administration attempted to end the programme improperly when it announced it was rescinding it in 2017. Since then, only people who were already enrolled in the Deferred Action for Childhood Arrivals (DACA) programme have been able to stay on board, and no new applicants have been accepted.
• About 650,000 people have DACA protections. Here are six from around the country.
• Sumbul Siddiqui: The 27-year-old lives in the Chicago area. Her country of origin is Pakistan. Growing up in the state of Georgia, Siddiqui remembers struggling to find and pay for medical care for her parents, the Pakistani immigrants who`ve had visas pending approval for nearly 20 years and didn`t have health insurance


7. Western border reopened for trade

• The Interior Ministry notified opening of three border crossings on Pakistan`s western border for trade traffic late on June 19, 2020 night.
• The border crossings had been closed on May 1 as part of the larger lockdowns being implemented across the country.
• Three border crossings have been specifically ordered opened for 24 hours, six days a week. They are Torkham, Chaman and Ghulam Khan border terminal. The notification says the opening is for import and export traffic and `unlimited number of trucks will be allowed per day for both Afghan transit and bilateral trade: while ensuring all Covid-19-related standard operating procedures and protocols` are being followed.
• Trade traffic will be allowed to transit six days a week except Saturday.
• On that day the borders will be open for pedestrian traffic.


8. Seoul`s unification minister resigns over tensions on North Korea

• South Korea`s Unification Minister, its point man for relations with the North, stepped down on June 19, 2020 over heightened tensions on the peninsula, days after Pyongyang blew up its liaison office with the South.
• President Moon Jae-in `accepted Unification Minister Kim Yeon-chul`s offer to resign`, the presidential Blue House said in a statement, after warning it will `no longer tolerate` the North`s unreasonable behaviour in an unusually stern criticism earlier this week.
• Kim had offered to leave on Wednesday, a day after the North demolished the liaison office, saying he `takes responsibility` for the worsening of inter-Korean relations.


9. UN resolution condemns systemic racism without naming US

• The UN`s top human rights body on June 19, 2020 condemned discriminatory police brutality and demanded a report on `systemic racism`, but rights groups accused Washington of wielding pressure to strip out any mention of the United States in the resolution.
• The UN Human Rights Council`s 47 members approved by consensus a revised resolution, which was initially presented by African countries for an urgent council debate, called following the death of George Floyd in US police custody.
• Floyd`s killing on May 25, after a white Minneapolis police officer since charged with murder pressed a knee on his neck for nearly nine minutes, fuelled a national and global uproar over racism and police brutality.


10. UN nuclear watchdog passes resolution criticising Iran

• The board of governors at the UN`s nuclear watchdog passed a resolution critical of Iran on June 19, 2020, the first of its kind since 2012, as tension mounts over Tehran`s nuclear programme.
• The resolution was put forward by European states and urges Tehran to provide inspectors from the International Atomic Energy Agency (IAEA) with access to two sites in Iran to clarify whether undeclared nuclear activity took place there in the early 2000s.
• It `calls on Iran to fully cooperate with the Agency and satisfy the Agency`s requests without any further delay, including by providing prompt access to the locations specified by the Agency`
