June 22, 2020: National / International Current Affairs

1. Two armymen martyred in NW

• Two security forces personnel including a Pak Army Captain embraced martyrdom as terrorists attacked a patrolling party near North Waziristan and South Waziristan boundary, the Inter-Services Public Relations (ISPR) directorate said June 21, 2020.
• According to the ISPR, the incident took place five kilometres southeast of Ghariom. The military’s media wing also said that the terrorists fired at security forces’ patrolling party in Ghariom. “In the exchange of fires Captain Sabih and Sepoy Naveed embraced martyrdom, while two soldiers got injured,” it added.
• During this encounter, a terrorist was also killed


2. In Punjab, wearing mask at public places is a must

• The Punjab government has issued regular Ordinance regarding “No Mask No Service” across the province, to contain the coronavirus pandemic.
• This order has been issued due to increasing cases of Coronavirus in the province. Punjab government has made it compulsory to wear mask in the government and private offices, at public places and during travelling.
• No services will be provided to persons in the offices who will not follow government instructions


3. Int`l flights service resumes for Sialkot after three-month hiatus

• International flights resumed at the Sialkot International Airport with the arrival of a direct flight (PK9206) of the Pakistan International Airlines (PIA) from Dammam, Saudi Arabia, on Sunday with 135 passengers onboard after the airport remained closed for more than three months due to the coronavirus pandemic.
• Senior PIA officials and leading people from travel trade accorded a warm welcome to the passengers on their arrival.
• The officials said the other international airlines would also resume their international flight operations for Sialkot soon.


4. KP govt launches project to set up farms under public-private partnership

• The Livestock and Dairy Development Department of Khyber Pakhtunkhwa has started a project to fatten calves here like rest of the province to bring the integrated districts on par with other developed areas of the province and meet their meat requirement.
• In this regard, a meeting of officers of the department and local cattle breeders was held in the office of Bannu Wazir Sub-Division under Livestock and Dairy Development Department of Khyber Pakhtunkhwa, which decided to setup farms under public-private partnership.
• Cattle owners of these farms have been required to take care of the calves for 90 days. The department will provide pesticides and treatment facilities to these animals. In addition, farmers will be given a feeding allowance of Rs. 4,000 per animal for a period of up to 90 days. The project has been launched under the Prime Minister’s National Agricultural Emergency Program to increase meat production per unit and promote livestock business in the integrated districts.


5. Religious scholar Talib Jauhari passes away

• Widely respected religious scholar and orator Allama Talib Jauhari passed away at a private hospital on June 21, 2020 night after a long illness. He was 80.
• Sources said the well known Shia scholar, whose speeches during Muharram used to be televised regularly, had been under treatment at the intensive care unit of the hospital for the past 15 days. He left behind three sons to mourn his death.
• According to the Majlis-e-Wahdatul Muslimeen media cell, Allama Jauhari was born on Aug 27, 1939 in Patna, Bihar. He obtained his early education from his father, Maulana Mohammad Mustafa Jauhar.In 1949 he migrated to Pakistan along with his father. Later he left for Najaf, Iraq, where he studied religion for a full ten years under the tutelage of renowned Shia scholars of the time.


6. Dubai to allow foreign tourists from July 7

• Dubai, whose economy is reliant on tourism and retail, said it would allow foreign visitors to enter from July 7, while those with residency visas would be able to enter from Monday in a further easing of its coronavirus lockdown.
• Those entering would have to present certificates to show they had recently tested negative for the coronavirus or would undergo tests on arrival at Dubai airports, the Dubai government`s media office said in a statement on June 21, 2020.
• Citizens and residents would be permitted to travel abroad from Tuesday June 23, it added


7. China bans US chicken, shuts Pepsi plant to fight virus

• China banned imports from a top US poultry producer and ordered a Beijing Pepsi factory to close June 21, 2020 as authorities clamped down on food production and distribution amid a new coronavirus cluster in the capital.
• Health officials also reported 22 new virus cases in Beijing, where they tested more than two million residents as they seek to contain a wave of new infections linked to a wholesale market in the capital.
• Imports of frozen chicken from Tyson Foods have been “temporarily suspended”, the General Administration of Customs said, after a virus outbreak was found at one of the company’s production facilities in the US.


8. London Airport reopens as UK slowly wakes up

• London City Airport awaited its first flight in nearly three months June 21, 2020 as Britain moved another step closer to fully emerging from its coronavirus lockdown on July 4.
• The main air hub for London’s once-bustling Canary Warf and City financial districts was expected to welcome a short-haul flight from the Isle of Man in the Irish Sea on Sunday evening.-
• They announced a deep cleaning and posted the results of a survey showing that most people — 72 percent — would like to fly again when it was safe


9. Spain reopens border with France

• Spain-Traffic flowed again across Spain’s border with France on June 21, 2020 as the last of the strict Spanish coronavirus restrictions introduced in March were eased.
• Prime Minister Pedro Sanchez announced earlier this month that Madrid would remove border checks with most of its EU member partner states from June 21 as efforts to control the pandemic appeared to be working.
• Spain has been one of the worst affected countries, suffering more than 28,000 deaths and nearly 300,000 cases, with its economy and especially the key tourist industry devastated


10. Cobain ‘Unplugged’ guitar sells for record $6 million at auction

• The guitar that grunge rock icon Kurt Cobain played during his legendary 1993 MTV Unplugged performance sold Saturday for a record $6 million, the auction house said.
• The retro acoustic-electric 1959 Martin D-18E that Cobain strummed for Nirvana’s career-defining performance in New York — just five months before his suicide at age 27 — sold after a bidding war to Peter Freedman, founder of RODE Microphones, Julien’s Auctions said. At $6.01 million after fees and commission, the instrument was the most expensive guitar ever sold at auction, among other records. The starting estimate was $1 million. Freedman said he plans to display the guitar in a worldwide tour, with proceeds going to benefit performing arts. “When I heard that this iconic guitar was up for auction I immediately knew it was a once-in-a-lifetime opportunity to secure it and use it as a vehicle to spotlight the struggles that those in the performing arts are facing and have always faced,” the Australian was quoted as saying by Julien’s Auctions
