1. $1.5bn per year Saudi oil facility available now: govt

• The government on June 21, 2021 announced the availability of $1.5 billion Saudi oil facility per annum and approval of the principles for national electricity policy with consensus by the Council of Common Interests (CCI).
• Speaking at a joint news conference with Energy Minister Hammad Azhar, Special Assistant to the Prime Minister (SAPM) on Revenue and Finance Dr Waqar Masood Khan said that announcement had been made for $1.5bn per annum oil supplies from Saudi Arabia on deferred payments.
• However, he declined to talk further about details of the oil facility and the reasons behind its reduction from $3bn originally agreed about three years ago which could not be effectively implemented amid cracks in bilateral relations


2. Pakistan to receive 13m Pfizer vaccines

• Pakistan on June 21, 2021 signed an agreement with Pfizer Pakistan under which it would receive 13 million doses of the American vaccine.
• On the other hand, over 600 diplomats from57 countries have been vaccinated at the National Institute of Health (NIH).
• According to a statement issued by a publicity firm, the agreement was signed by Pfizer Pakistan and the National Disaster Management Authority (NDMA) to supply 13 million doses of the Pfizer-BioNTech vaccine (BNT162b2)


3. Pakistan has become `net importer of food`, NA told

• Losing patience and without waiting for his scheduled winding-up speech on June 24, Finance Minister Shaukat Tarin on June 21, 2021 took the floor of the National Assembly during the middle of the general discussion on the federal budget 2021-22 and castigated the opposition members for constantly calling the document `fake and a pack of lies`.

4. Tariq Malik notified as NADRA chairman

• The interior ministry on June 21, 2021 formally notified the appointment of Tariq Malik as chairman of the National Database and Registration Authority (NADRA) again.
• `In exercise of the powers conferred under section 3(3) of the National Database and Registration Authority (NADRA) Ordinance, 2000, the competent authority is pleased to appoint Muhammad Tariq Malik as chairman of NADRA for a term of three years in terms of section 3(5) of the Nadra Ordinance 2000.
• Terms and conditions of his appointment including emoluments will be determined separately,` read the notification, a copy of which is available with Dawn


5. PIA resumes flights to Toronto

• Pakistan International Airlines (PIA) has announced resumption of direct flights to Toronto, Canada.
• A PIA spokesman said on June 21, 2021 that Canadian officials had allowed PIA to resume flights to Toronto. Operations had earlier been restricted to cargo only on Pakistan to Canada routes due to surge in Covid-19 cases. However, other travel related advisories pertaining to Canada will remain in place, he said.
• In the first phase, PIA will start three direct flights per week from Pakistan to Toronto. The airline will be following strict standard operating procedures (SOPs), the PIA chief executive officer (CEO) assured the Canadian government.


6. Swedish govt toppled in no-trust vote

• Sweden`s government was toppled on June 21, 2021 after Stefan Lofven became the country`s first prime minister to lose a no-confidence vote, meaning he can now either resign or trigger a snap election.
• The motion of no confidence was filed on Thursday by the far right Sweden Democrats, after the Left Party, which has been propping up the government, said it was planning such a motion itself in protest against a plan to ease rent controls.
• The conservative Moderate Party and the Christian Democrats were quick to back the motion, which was passed by 181 MPs in the 349-seat parliament


7. Taliban overrun town in north, encircle Kunduz

• Taliban fighters took control of a key district in Afghanistan`s northern Kunduz province on June 21, 2021 and encircled the provincial capital, police said, as the insurgent group added to its string of recent victories on the battlefield.
• Fighting around Imam Sahib district began late on Sunday and by mid-day the Taliban had overrun the district headquarters and were in control of police headquarters, Inamuddin Rahmani, provincial police spokesman, said.


8. Israel uses `airborne laser` to down drones

• Israel used an airborne laser last week to shoot down drones in a series of tests, officials said on June 21, 2021, calling it a `milestone` to update its already powerful defence systems.
• During the tests, which took place `over the last week`, a prototype of the high-power laser system carried on a small civilian plane `successfully intercepted several UAVs`, said Yaniv Rotem, head of the defence ministry`s research and development unit, using the acronym for unmanned aerial vehicles.
• The system could down any flying object, including `drones, mortars, rockets, ballistic missiles`, Rotem said, adding they hoped to have a working prototype in `three to four years`


9. Israel-based i24News channel to open office in Dubai

• Israel-based i24News television network said on June 21, 2021 it would open an office in Dubai, the first to do so since the normalisation of ties between the Jewish state and the UAE.
• “In the last year, we have witnessed regional diplomatic changes that enable business ties and opportunities for partnerships,” said Frank Melloul, chief executive of i24News.
• “The establishment of our office in Dubai Media City gives us a strategic platform to expand our coverage of the Middle East right from the heart of the region’s media industry hub,” he added


10. Multan stun Islamabad to punch ticket to PSL 6 final

• Islamabad United finally hit the roadblock in the HBL Pakistan Super League 6 on June 21, 2021 as the runaway leaders during the league stage as they suffered a stunning 31-run defeat in their Qualifier to Multan Sultans who punched a direct ticket for their first-ever PSL final.
• The turnaround was quite unexpected given Islamabad`s red-hot for mwhich saw them win five matches on trot to top the standings with an unprecedented eight victories. But the two-time winners of the title in 2016 and 2018 will get another opportunity to make Thursday`s decider provided they overcome either Peshawar Zalmi or holders Karachi Kings who were playing in Eliminator 1 at the time of filing this report in the Eliminator 2 on Tuesday
