1. Pakistan, Facebook join hands to fight Covid-19

• Pakistan and Facebook have partnered to fight Covid-19 as the world`s prominent social media platform has provided Marketing Partner Support and Ad Credits for campaigns against the 56
• deadly virus and helped the government increase its engagement rates with the public on these posts.
• As part of these campaigns, Facebook and some ministries focused on creating videos and messages for boosting `vaccine confidence` amongst the public.
• The messaging campaigns helped the Ministry of Health increase its total number of page
• likes to 470,000, increasing the government`s ability to connect with the people and provide information to its stakeholders

2. Noor Ahmed made executive director of ADB

• The government on June 22, 2021 appointed Noor Ahmed, a BS-22 officer of Secretariat Group, as executive director of the Asian Development Bank (ADB) for a term of four years starting from July 1, 2021.
• He is at present working as federal secretary of economic affairs division.
• Mr Ahmed will replace former secretary of finance Shahid Mehmood, Pakistan`s current executive director, whose tenure comes to an end on June 30, 2021.

3. 3 PAF officers promoted as Air Vice Marshal

• The government has promoted 3 PAF officers to the rank of Air Vice Marshal. The promoted Air officers include Air Vice Marshal Imran Saif, Air Vice Marshal Hussain Ahmed Siddiqui and Air Vice Marshal Zaeem Afzal.
• It said Air Vice Marshal Imran Saif was commissioned in Air Defence Branch of Pakistan Air Force in June, 1990. During his career, he has commanded an air defence squadron and an operational wing. He has also served as Sector Commander, South Sector and Assistant Chief of the Air Staff (Air Defence) at Air Headquarters, Islamabad. He is the recipient of Sitara-i-Imtiaz (Military)

4. Taliban capture Afghanistan`s main Tajik border crossing

• The Taliban captured Afghanistan`s main border crossing with Tajikistan on June 21,
• 021, officials said, with security forces abandoning their posts and some fleeing across the frontier.
• The taking olometres (30 miles) from Kunduz city, is the most significant gain for the Taliban since the US began the final stage of its troop withdrawal in May, with peace talks between the insurgents and Kabul deadlocked.

5. Famine threatens 41m people, warns UN

• Famine is knocking at the doors of 41 million people in 43 countries, including Afghanistan, according to a UN report released on June 22, 2021.
• The report by the World Food Programme (WFP) warned that the threat of famine had increased dramatically over the past two years from 27 million in 2019 to 41 million this year.
• The UN agency has sought urgent funding and humanitarian access to those in need

6. Madrid pardons jailed Catalan separatists

• Spain on June 21, 2021 pardoned nine jailed Catalan separatists behind a failed 2017 independence bid as it aimed to break the deadlock over the political crisis in the wealthy northeastern region.
• In announcing the decision, Prime Minister Pedro Sanchez said he hoped the move would draw a line under past confrontations with Catalonia`s separatistled regional government and open the way for talks.
• `With this act, we want to open a new stage of dialogue and reconciliation and close once and for all the division and confrontation,` he said

7. Heatwave bakes Moscow as temperatures set 120-year record

• Moscow has been hit by a historic heatwave this week, with temperatures reaching a 120-year record due to the effects of climate change, Russia`s weather service said on Tuesday.
• On June 21, 2021 the temperature in the Russian capital hit 34.7 degrees Celsius, according to Roshydromet, matching the record for a June day in 1901.
• The weather service, which has kept records since 1881, is forecasting temperatures above 35 degrees Celsius on Thursday and Friday. `The increase in temperatures recorded in Moscow for these days is unprecedented in 120 years, Roshydromet meteorologist Marina Makarova said. `This is because of global climate change

8. Belarus denounces ‘destructive’ new Western sanctions

• Belarus on June 21, 2021 denounced coordinated sanctions against the ex-Soviet country by the EU, US, Britain and Canada, imposed after the forced landing of a Ryanair flight to arrest a regime critic.
• The sanctions follow global outrage over the forced landing of a passenger flight in Minsk where authorities detained opposition activist Roman Protasevich and his girlfriend who were travelling on board.
• They were the latest in a series of penalties against President Alexander Lukashenko, who has ruled Belarus for nearly three decades and has clamped down on the opposition after mass protests erupted following disputed presidential elections last year. “We have repeatedly stated that sanctions negatively affect the interests of citizens, they are counterproductive and vicious,” the Belarusian foreign ministry said in a statement

9. Explosive knocks by Zazai, Wells power Peshawar into final

• Peshawar Zalmi put up a majestic all-round show at the Sheikh Zayed Cricket Stadium in Abu Dhabi on June 21, 2021 night when they mauled Islamabad United by eight wickets in their Eliminator-2 clash to set up the HBL Pakistan Super League final against Multan Sultans.
• Peshawar`s road to the decider on Thursday was set up by a rollicking partnership of 126 between Hazratullah Zazai and Jonathan Wells in only 81 balls after Kamran Akmal (8) had chopped Hasan Ali onto his stumps. But then there was no looking back for Wahab Riaz`s charges who outplayed Islamabad in all departments to make their fourth final in six seasons. They sauntered home with 21 balls to spare after having restricted the opposition to 174-9.

10. Younis Khan quits as batting coach

• Pakistan Cricket Board (PCB) has announced that Younis Khan has quit as batting coach of Pakistan men’s national cricket team after the former cricketer and the PCB mutually agreeing to part ways.
• Younis was appointed as batting coach last November and had a two-year contract with the PCB which would have ended after the T20 World in 2022. Younis, who was with the Pakistan side in England last year to provide his batting expertise, began his official coa
ching stint with the tour of New Zealand in 2020-21, with his side losing two of the three T20Is and also suffering a 2-0 loss in the Test series that was part of the World Test Championship
