1. Lahore blast near jailed JuD leader`s house kills three

• A powerful blast near the residence of Jamaatud Dawa chief Hafiz Saeed on June 23, 2021 killed three people and injured 24 others, including a police constable.
• Six-year-old Abdul Haq, his father Abdul Malik, 50, and a young passerby died in the explosion that left a four-foot-deep and eight foot-wide crater on the road and damaged several houses and shops nearby.
• Without naming the JuD chief, the Punjab inspector general of police (IGP) said the blast occurred near the residence of a high-value target in Johar Town where a picket manned by armed police personnel had been set up


2. Intelligence coordination body becomes functional, finally

• The long awaited National Intelligence Coordination Committee (NICC), the liaison body for the country`s spy agencies, is finally functional.
• Prime Minister Imran Khan on June 22, 2021 presided over the inaugural session of the committee at the Inter-Services Intelligence (ISI) headquarters.
• The meeting was attended by Interior Minister Sheikh Rashid Ahmed, Information Minister Fawad Chaudhry, heads of the services` intelligence agencies, Intelligence Bureau and Federal Investigation Agency


3. World`s largest aircraft lands in Karachi

• The world`s largest cargo aircraft, known as Antonov An-225 Mriya, made a technical stopover at Karachi airport on Wednesday.
• The Russian-made wide-body aircraft, which is powered by six turbof an engines and said to be the longest and heaviest plane ever built, took off from Afghanistan and landed at Jinnah International Airport a little before noon.
• With maximum take-off weight of 700tonnes, it has the largest wingspan of any aircraft in operational service


4. Two million Sinovac doses reach Islamabad

• In the wake of reports of Covid-19 vaccine shortage emerging from various parts of the country, two million doses reached the federal capital on Wednesday from China.
• On the other hand, fewer than 1,000 positive cases were reported in the last 24 hours.
• According to a statement of the National Command and Operation Centre (NCOC), two million doses of Sinovac vaccine arrived on a special PIA plane at the Islamabad International Airport


5. ECC approves Rs9.8bn supplementary grants

• The Economic Coordination Committee (ECC) of the Cabinet kept on approving technical supplementary grants just a couple of days ahead of expected approval of the federal budget later this week.
• Presided over by Finance Minister Shaukat Tarin, the ECC was called without any other agenda except to approve five technical supplementary grants (TSG) having total allocation of Rs9.856bn


6. Balochistan education minister Rind resigns

• Balochistan Education Minister and parliamentary party leader of the Pakistan Tehreek-i-Insaf (PTI), Sardar Yar Muhammad Rind announced his resignation as the minister on June 23, 2021.
• As if this was not enough, Sardar Rind indicated that he would take the decision to leave the PTI after consultation with his political friends and people of his constituency.
• He made the announcement on the floor of the Balochistan Assembly while speaking on the new budget presented by Finance Minister Mir Zahoor Ahmed Buledi.


7. FBR withdraws 17pc sales tax on bran

• Flour millers on Wednesday linked calling off strike with a written clarification from the Federal Board of Revenue (FBR) that no change is made in the existing tax regime.
• Pakistan Flour Mills Association (PFMA) has already announced plans to go on a two-day strike from June 24 as a protest against budget measures proposing a hike in income tax on turnover of flour mills and increase the sales tax on bran. Earlier, FBR Chairman Asim Ahmed in a WhatsApp message to Dawn said that in the Finance Bill 2021, the table prescribing tax rates for a minimum tax on a turnover basis has been substituted for providing relief to retailers of fast-moving consumer goods including flourmills and refineries. However, inadvertently the words, `flour mills` could not be mentioned


8. No recognition if Taliban take Kabul by force, warns US

• The United States has cautioned the Taliban that the world will not accept a government imposed by force in Afghanistan as an intelligence report warned that the current setup in Kabul could collapse within six months after the American withdrawal.
• State Department spokesperson Ned Price also indicated that US financial assistance to Afghanistan could only continue if the country has a government that`s recognised by all.


9. US entrepreneur McAfee dies in Spanish jail after court ruling

• Technology entrepreneur John McAfee apparently hanged himself in his Spanish prison cell on June 23, 2021 after a high court authorised his extradition to the United States, according to his lawyers.
• Known for his eccentric behaviour and videos, the US entrepreneur was a pioneer of anti-virus software and indicted in Tennessee on tax evasion charges. McAfee was charged in a cryptocurrency fraud case in New York.
• The Spanish court said in its ruling it had approved McAfee`s extradition to the United States where he is wanted for tax evasion


10. NZ beat India in gripping final to claim WTC title

• New Zealand enjoyed the greatest triumph in their cricket history as they beat India by eight wickets in the inaugural World Test Championship final at Southampton on June 23, 2021.
• Two years on from their agonising Super Over loss to England in the 50-over World Cup final at Lord`s, the Blackcaps claimed their first major global title.
• Set a modest target of 139 in 53 overs, New Zealand finished on 140-2 with plenty of time to spare in a match extended into a reserve sixth day following two days lost to rain
