1. $442m loan accord signed with WB for Punjab projects

• The government on June 26, 2021 signed a loan agreement worth $442.4 million with World Bank to provide equitable and sustainable access to clean drinking water, improve sanitation and reduce child stunting in Punjab.
• Secretary of Economic Affairs Division Noor Ahmed and World Bank Country Director Najy Benhassine signed the `Punjab Rural Sustainable Water Supply and Sanitation Project` on behalf of their respective sides.
• The project interventions will cover 2,000 villages in 16 districts of Punjab that are the poorest and have worst social infrastructure and the stunting issue


2. Balochistan Assembly passes budget

• The Balochistan Assembly on June 26, 2021 passed the annual budget of Rs570 billion for fiscal year 2021-22 in the absence of opposition members who boycotted the budget session.
• Ministers and PMAs of treasury benches took part in the four-day debate on the budget. In their speeches they termed it the best budget, saying that funds under the Public Sector Development Programme (PSDP) had been allocated for all districts of the province and constituencies of all elected members.
• However, Sardar Yar Mohammad Rind, who has recently resigned as education minister, criticised the government for ignoring his constituency in the PSDP and alleged that development funds were being given to his opponents who were not elected representatives.


3. GB presents Rs1.6tr budget

• The Gilgit-Baltistan government on June 26, 2021 presented Rs1.6 trillion budget for the fiscal year 2021-22 amid opposition boycott of the budget session.
• Of the total outlay, Rs44 billion have been allocated for development and Rs51 billion for non-development purposes.
• An amount of Rs10 billion has been allocated for transportation and payment of subsidy on wheat.
• The budget session was chaired by Speaker Amjad Hussain Zaidi.
• Finance minister Javed Ali Manwa presented the budget, Announcing a 10 per cent increase in the salaries of government employees. He also proposed minimum salary of contingent employees at Rs20,000 per month.


4. Govt obtains 63pc more foreign loans in 11MFY21

• Pakistan borrowed over $12 billion during the 11 months of the current fiscal year (11MFY21) an increase of about 63 per cent compared to the same period in FY20 reflecting the growing need for foreign exchange despite record remittances and higher exports.
• During July-May FY21, the government borrowed $12.13bn compared to $7.44bn in the same period in previous fiscal year, recording an increase of $4.68bn or 62.8pc


5. Erdogan launches work on controversial Black Sea canal

• Turkish President Recep Tayyip Erdogan on June 26, 2021 launched the start of construction on a controversial canal aimed at easing congestion on the Bosphorus but which critics say courts environmental disaster.
• The `Canal Istanbul` is a gigantic waterway running parallel to the Bosphorus Strait connecting the Black Sea to the Sea of Marmara and the Mediterranean


6. UK health secretary resigns after Covid breach

• UK Health Secretary Matt Hancock resigned on June 26, 2021 following revelations that he broke the government`s own coronavirus restrictions during an affair with a close aide.
• The front man for Britain`s response to the pandemic, particularly the nationwide vaccine roll-out, quit in a letter to Prime Minister Boris Johnson.
• `We owe it to people who have sacrificed so much in this pandemic to be honest when we have let them down as I have done by breaching the guidance,` he wrote


7. US regulator issues alert about Pfizer, Moderna jabs

• The US drug regulator added a warning to the literature that accompanies Pfizer Inc /BioNTech and Moderna Covid vaccine shots to indicate the rare risk of heart inflammation after its use.
• For each vaccine, the fact sheets for healthcare providers have been revised to include a warning that reports of adverse events suggest increased risks of myocarditis and pericarditis, particularly after the second dose and with onset of symptoms within a few days after vaccination, the FDA said.


8. Use of drugs on the rise, says UN report

• The United Nations Office on Drugs and Crime (UNODC) has estimated that around 275 million people used drugs worldwide last year, while over 36 million people suffered from drug use disorders.
• The `2021 World Drug Report` released in Islamabad on June 26, 2021 says between 2010 and 2019, the estimated number of past year users of any drug globally increased from 226m to 274m, or by 22 per cent, in part as a result of global population growth


9. Former caretaker premier Hazar Khoso passes away

• Former caretaker prime minister retired Justice Mir Hazar Khan Khoso passed away in Quetta on June 26, 2021, due to cardiac arrest. He was 92.
• Mir Khoso, who belonged to Jaffarabad district of Balochistan, had been suffering from heart ailment for some time and undergoing treatment at a private hospital in Quetta for the last one month.
• His body was taken to the Katbar Sharif area of Lehri tehsil, Sibi district, where he was buried on the premises of a shrine, according to his will. Mir Khoso was a devotee of Pir Kathar Sharif.


10. India may shift T20 World Cup to UAE

• This year`s Twenty20 World Cup is set to be shifted to the United Arab Emirates (UAE) due to the coronavirus (Covid-19) situation in India.
• The pandemic swept the world`s second most populous nation last year, resulting in a lengthy shutdown.
• Infections have rocketed again in another wave this year as the country scrambles to curb a more transmissible variant of the virus, hitting plans to ease lockdown measures.
