1. ECO freight train to resume operations after nine years

• After a gap of nine years or so, the Istanbul-Islamabad freight train is likely to resume operations on March 4, connecting goods train business of three countries -Turkey, Iran and Pakistan.
• The container train would start its journey from Istanbul (Turkey) for Islamabad (Pakistan) via Zahidan on March 4. Though the schedule will be reconfirmed in a day or two, so far March 4 is the final date of departure of the train from Istanbul.


2. Pakistan to host World Environment Day today

• Pakistan will host its first-ever global World Environment Day celebrations today (March 1) to create awareness for effective actions among masses and stakeholders like the rest of the world for joining hands to preserve the rapidly dwindling ecology and ecosystems due to climate change.
• The announcement for making Pakistan host country was made on the margins of the virtual 5th UN Environment Assembly (UNEA-5) meeting held on February 22 in Nairboi, Kenya


3. Philippines receives first Covid-19 vaccines from China

• The Philippines received 600,000 vaccine doses from China February 28, 2021, kick starting the country’s inoculation drive despite concerns over the Sinovac jab’s effectiveness.
• Top government officials and health workers will be the first on Monday to receive the Chinese-made vaccine called Corona Vac just days after the drug regulator approved it for emergency use.


4. Iran scorns idea of talks with West to revive 2015 N-deal

• Iran on February 28, 2021 ruled out holding an informal meeting with the United States and European powers to discuss ways to revive its 2015 nuclear deal with major powers, insisting that Washington must lift all its unilateral sanctions.
• `Considering the recent actions and statements by the United States and three European powers, Iran does not consider this the time to hold an informal meeting with these countries, which was proposed by the EU foreign policy chief,` foreign ministry spokesman Saeed Khatibzadeh said, according to Iranian media.


5. Israel agrees to vaccinate Palestinians with permits

• Israel said on February 28, 2021 it would vaccinate Palestinians in the West Bank with permit s to work in Jewish settlements in the occupied territory and inside Israel against the coronavirus.
• The Palestinian Authority said last week it had reached an agreement with Israel that would see the Jewish state vaccinate 100,000Palestinian labourers


6. 18 anti-coup protesters die in crackdown across Myanmar

• Myanmar police fired on protesters around the country on February 28, 2021 the bloodiest day in weeks of demonstrations against a military coup and at least 18 people were killed, the UN human rights office said.
• Police were out in force early and opened Ere in different parts of the country`s biggest city of Yangon after stun grenades, tear gas and shots in the air failed to break up crowds. Soldiers also reinforced police contingents


7. Israeli-owned ship docks in Dubai after mysterious blast

• An Israeli-owned cargo ship that suffered a mysterious explosion in the Gulf of Oman came to Dubai`s port for repairs on February 28, 2021, days after the blast that revived security concerns in Mideast waterways amid heightened tensions with Iran.
• Journalists saw the hulking Israeli owned MV Helios Ray sitting at dry dock facilities at Dubai`s Port Rashid


8. Golden Globes to launch Covid-era awards season

• Hollywood’s award season kicks off this week at a very different Golden Globes, with a mainly virtual ceremony set to boost or dash the Oscars hopes of early frontrunners like Nomad land and The Trial of the Chicago 7.
• Usually a star-packed, laid-back party that draws Tinsel town’s biggest names to a Beverly Hills hotel ballroom, this pandemic edition will be broadcast from two scaled-down venues in California and New York, with frontline and essential workers among the few in attendance


9. PCB approves first boards of six cricket associations

• The Pakistan Cricket Board (PCB) has given approval to the eagerly-awaited First Boards of the six cricket associations at its 61st Board of Governors (BoG) meeting while empowering the interim bodies, appointed for one-year term, to carry out functions assigned to respective management committees.
• According to the discussions which took place here on Saturday, the BoG also decided that the registration of clubs across the country will start in March with more details to be shared later


10. Qalandars beat Kings in last over thriller

• Brilliant batting by David Wiese, Fakhar Zaman and Ben Dunk and outstanding bowling by Shaheen Shah Afridi steered Lahore Qalandars to a vigorous six-wicket victory over defending champions Karachi Kings in the 11th match of the PSL-6 at Karachi’s National Stadium.
• According to information made available here, Qalandars, chasing the target of 187 to win, lost the quick wickets for no run in the very first over. Mohammad Hafeez (15 off nine, one four, one six) was the next batsman to go as Qalandars were reeling at 33 for three in the fifth over. Opening batsman Fakhar Zaman was joined by another left-hander Ben Dunk and both contributed 119 runs for the fourth-wicket stand. Fakhar emerged as top scorer with a 54-ball 83, which he gathered hitting 8 fours and 4 sixes.
