1. Pakistan test-fires Shaheen missile

• Pakistan on March 26, 2021 conducted a successful flight test of Shaheen-1A surface-to-surface ballistic missile, having a range of 900 kilometres.
• The test flight was aimed at re-validating various design and technical parameters of the weapon system, including advanced navigation system.


2. PM removes aide, official over June oil crisis

• Ordering a forensic investigation into the June 2020 countrywide petroleum shortages, Prime Minister Imran Khan on March 26, 2021 removed his special assistant on petroleum and the petroleum secretary from their positions to ensure transparency.
• In June last year, the country`s petrol stations went dry as international prices went down and oil companies resorted to lower imports to avoid inventory losses amid alleged collusion between some government officials and market players.


3. World Bank, Pakistan ink deals for $1.3bn aid

• The World Bank on March 26, 2021 signed agreements with Pakistan to provide $1.336 billion worth of assistance which would boost the country`s foreign exchange reserves and help support social sectors.
• A total of six project agreements worth $1.336bn, including $128 million grant, were signed to support the government`s initiatives in social protection, disaster and climate risk management, improving infrastructure for resilience, agriculture and food security, human capital development and governance sectors


4. ECC okays Rslbn to highlight govt achievements

• The Economic Coordination Committee (ECC) of the Cabinet, upon the directives of Prime Minister Imran Khan, on March 26, 2021 approved Rs1 billion for advertisement campaigns to promote activities and success stories of the government.
• The hurriedly called one point meeting of the ECC was presided over by Finance Minister Dr Abdul Hafeez Shaikh on a summary moved by the Ministry of Information and Broadcasting


5. Flight lands at Saidu Sharif airport after 17 years

• Pakhtunkhwa Chief Minister Mahmood Khan on March 26, 2021 said that resumption of flights to Saidu Sharif after 17 years was an achievement of the government as it was a longstanding desire of the people of Swat valley.
• In 1994, the airport was briefly seized by the Tehreek Nifaz Shariati-Muhammadi, but security forces took control of it after a clash with the banned outfit. The airport was closed temporarily in 2002 when Pakistan International Airlines suspended its flights. Moreover, due to insurgency in Swat from 2006 to 2009 the airport could not be made functional.


6. UN investigator accuses S. Arabia of `bully-boy tactics

• A UN rights expert on Friday accused Saudi Arabia of bullying after a top official allegedly threatened her life following her probe into journalist Jamal Khashoggi`s 2018 murder.
• `The Saudi Arabia threat against me was brazen, it took place in a high level diplomatic setting and it was made public, confirmed by the UN,` Agnes Callamard said in a tweet.
• Such `bully-boy tactics should not find shelter anywhere,` she insisted


7. France bears responsibility for Rwanda genocide, says report

• France bears overwhelming responsibilities over the 1994 genocide in Rwanda and was `blind` to preparations for the massacre, a report by historians said on Friday, while adding there was no evidence Paris was complicit in the killings.
• A commission set up by President Emmanuel Macron concluded there had been a `failure` on the part of France under former leader Francois Mitterrand over the genocide that saw around 800,000 people slaughtered, mainly from the ethnic Tutsi minority


8. Eritrea agrees to withdraw troops from Ethiopian region

• Eritrea will pull its troops out of Ethiopia`s northern Tigray region, Ethiopian Prime Minister Abiy Ahmed said on March 26, 2021, a potential breakthrough in a drawn-out conflict that has seen atrocities carried out against civilians.
• The announcement comes as Abiy, winner of the 2019 Nobel Peace Prize, faces mounting pressure to end fighting in which both Eritrean and Ethiopian troops stand accused of abuses, including mass killings and rapes.
• Abiy sent troops into Tigray on November 4 after accusing the region`s once-dominant ruling party, the Tigray People`s Liberation Front (TPLF), of attacks on army camps


9. China, Iran likely to sign 25-year accord

• Chinese Foreign Minister Wang Yi arrived in Iran on March 25, 2021 for a visit that Iranian state media said would see the signing of a 25-year cooperation agreement between the two countries, which are both under US sanctions.
• The accord, final details of which are yet to be announced, is expected to include Chinese investments in Iran`s energy and infrastructure sectors.
• In 2016, China, Iran`s largest trading partner and longtime ally, agreed to boost bilateral trade by more than 10 times to $600 billion in the next decade


10. Writer Haseena Moin dies

• Distinguished writer and arguably the most influential television playwright of the country Haseena Moin died of a heart attack on March 26, 2021 morning. She was 79.
• Ms Moin was born on Nov 20, 1941 in Kanpur, India. After independence, her family decided to settle in Pakistan. They first shifted to Punjab for a brief period, after which the family made Karachi, Sindh, their home. Ms Moin studied at the Government College for Women and later in 1963 did her master`s in history from the University of Karachi.
