1. Karachi to get 450MW more this summer

• The city would get an additional 450 megawatts of electricity this summer as the National Transmission and Dispatch Company (NTDC) has completed upgrade of 130kmlong 220-kilowatt double circuit transmission line between Jamshoro and KDA Scheme-33 of Karachi, an official announcement said on March 27, 2021.
• Federal Minister for Power, Petroleum and Natural Resources Omar Ayub Khan took to Twitter to share the `achievement` calling it `good news for Karachi for coming summer` and gave credit to the Pakistan Tehreek-i-Insaf government. The development, he said, would make collectively 1,100MW available to Karachites in the approaching summer season.


2. Under new law, SBP to retain refinancing facilities

• The State Bank of Pakistan (SBP) will discontinue quasi-fiscal operations or monetary actions it undertakes on behalf of the government but keep refinancing facilities it uses to support access (of various sectors of the economy) to subsidised credit, even after the passage from the parliament of amendments to the existing SBP Act of 1956.
• `A central bank should have quantitative tools in its arsenal. If we did not have these tools, we would not have been able to support the economy and business during the Covid19 crisis through a reduction in the interest rate and boost investment through long-term, cheap loans under the Temporary Economic Refinance Facility (TERF),` a central banker elaborated in a background briefing on the suggested amendments to the SBP law of 1956 that seek to redefine its core objectives, give the bank and its governor unprecedented powers, and preclude political influence in determination of monetary policy and exchange rate policy


3. HEC chairman removed

• The government on March 27, 2021 removed Higher Education Commission (HEC) chairman Dr Tariq Banuri.
• The notification removing the HEC head was issued after the promulgation of a presidential ordinance.
• Meanwhile, Pakistan People`s Party (PPP) Senator Sherry Rehman criticised the removal of the HEC chairman and asked the government to end adhocism in the education sector


4. Arms display, firing in air banned in GB

• Section144wasimposedacrossGilgit-Baltistan on March 27, 2021, banning carrying and display of arms and firing in air for two months to maintain peace in the region.
• According to a notification issued by GB home secretary Mohammad Ali Randhawa on Saturday, the measure was taken to avoid any untoward incident as the Naltar incident and subsequent developments had created a precarious situation in the region.
• Firing on a passenger vehicle in Naltar the other day left six people dead and seven others injured.


5. Pakistan marks Earth Hour

• Like other parts of the world, the annual Earth Hour was observed in Pakistan on March 27, 2021.
• The lights of Prime Minister House were switched off from 2030 to 2130 hours. Earlier, Prime Minister Imran Khan said improving the environmental conditions is the top priority of the government and asked the public to fully support government to protect the environment


6. US Biden invites 40 world leaders to climate summit sans Pakistan

• President of the United States Joe Biden had invited 40 world leaders to participate in the Virtual Leaders Summit on Climate on April 22-23 but surprisingly he left out Pakistan, a country severely and frequently affected by climate change, global warming and rising temperatures.
• Special Presidential Envoy for Climate John Kerry in a tweet said that the summit would reconvene the Major Economies Forum and would be a milestone. The leaders who were invited for Global Climate Summit included Prime Ministers of Bangladesh, Bhutan and India but not Prime Minister Imran Khan.
• President Biden had also invited leadership of countries like Japan, Russia, Saudi Arabia, China, Turkey, United Arab Emirates, United Kingdom, France, Germany, Indonesia and Italy.


7. Bloodiest day in post-coup Myanmar leaves over 110 dead

• As Myanmar`s military celebrated the annual Armed Forces Day holiday with a parade on March 27, 2021 in the country`s capital, soldiers and police elsewhere killed 114 people, including children, in a brutal crackdown on pro-democracy protesters, news reports and witnesses said.
• The killings drew strong renewed criticism from western countries. British Ambassador Dan Chugg said the security forces had `disgraced themselves` and the US envoy called the violence horrifying.
• Military jets also launched air strikes on a village in territory controlled by an armed group from the Karen ethnic minority and at least two people were killed, a civil society group said


8. Biden suggests rival plan to `Belt and Road`

• US President Joe Biden has suggested founding an initiative from `democratic` countries to rival China`s trillion-dollar Belt and Road infrastructure initiative as tensions spike between the Asian power and Western nations.
• Biden said late on March 26, 2021 that he noated the proposal in a call with British Prime Minister Boris Johnson amid a row over sanctions against abuses targeting the Uighur minority in China`s northwestern Xinjiang region.
• `I suggested we should have, essentially, a similar initiative coming from the democratic states, helping those communities around the world that, in fact, need help, Biden told reporters, referring to Belt and Road


9. Beijing sanctions US, Canadian officials over Xinjiang

• China announced tit-for-tat sanctions against two Americans, a Canadian and a rights advocacy body on March 27, 2021, in response to sanctions imposed earlier this week by the two countries over Beijing`s treatment of Uighurs.
• Two members of the US Commission on International Religious Freedom, Gayle Manchin and Tony Perkins, as well as Canadian MP Michael Chong, and a Canadian parliamentary committee on human rights, are prohibited from entering mainland China, Hong Kong and Macau, the Chinese foreign ministry said.


10. Iran and China sign 25-year cooperation pact

• Iran and China signed a 25-year `strategic cooperation pact` on March 27, 2021 in the latest expansion of Beijing`s flagship trillion-dollar Belt and Road Initiative as the US rivals build closer ties.
• Negotiations for the deal, launched five years ago, sparked controversy in Iran last year and virtually no details of its contents have been released.
• China is Iran`s leading trade partner and was one of the biggest buyers of Iranian oil before then US president Donald Trump re imposed sweeping unilateral sanctions in 2018 after abandoning a multilateral nuclear agreement with Tehran.
