1. NAB arrests Jang group owner in 34-year-old case

• The National Accountability Bureau (NAB) on March 12, 2020 arrested Jang group editor-in-chief Mir Shakil-ur Rahman in a 34-year-old case related to 54-kanal land he allegedly acquired `illegally` in the tenure of then chief minister of Punjab Nawaz Sharif.
• According to the NAB, Mr Rahman has been arrested in connection with `alleged illegal exemption of 54 plots (each measuring one kanal) in H-block of Jauhar Town phase H allotted to him being the holder of general power of attorney on behalf of Hidayat Ali and Hikmat Ali by the then Punjab chief minister (Nawaz Sharif in 1986) in violation of the relevant laws/rules`.
• In a statement, NAB said Mir Shakil-ur-Rahman would be presented before an accountability court in Lahore on Friday (March 12, 2020) to obtain his physical remand


2. Cabinet declares medical emergency across Punjab

• The Punjab cabinet on March 12, 2020 declared medical emergency across the province to ensure maximum measures to control the spread of coronavirus.
• The cabinet discussed the pandemic beyond its formal agenda and resolved that there was an urgent need to take precautionary measures as 20 cases had already been reported in Pakistan 16 in Sindh and four in Gilgit-Baltistan.

3. WHO, health ministry and ANF join hands against tobacco, drug use

• The World Health Organisation (WHO), Ministry of National Health Services (NHS) tobacco control directorate and the Anti-Narcotics Force (ANF) signed a memorandum of understanding (MoU) to work together to decrease the use of tobacco products and protect society from drugs.
• Under the agreement, the WHO will provide support for research to find alternate cash crops in areas where tobacco is cultivated.


4. 2,500 ordinances issued since 1947, IHC told

• Since independence in 1947, successive governments in Pakistan issued over 2,500 ordinances as an alternative to the routine legislative business.
• It has been highlighted in the arguments on a petition filed by PML-N lawmaker Barrister Mohsin Shahnawaz Ranjha in the Islamabad High court. The petition says the president, under Article 89 of the Constitution, is empowered to promulgate ordinances which are a form of temporary legislation subject to two expressly stipulated conditions: when neither the Senate nor the National Assembly is in session, and if circumstances exist which render it necessary to take immediate action.
• Umar Gillani, the petitioner`s counsel, informed the court on Thursday that over 2,500 federal-level ordinances had been passed since the country came into being in 1947.
• At a previous hearing, the law and justice ministry had said that 156 ordinances had been passed between 2008 and 2018.


5. Singapore to close mosques for disinfection

• Singapore will temporarily close all the country`s mosques for deep cleaning from Friday (March 12, 2020) after two men contracted the coronavirus while attending an Islamic gathering in neighbouring Malaysia, authorities said.
• About 10,000 people from several countries took part in the Feb 28 to March 1 event at a mosque near the Malaysian capital, Kuala Lumpur.
• After discovering two men who attended the event were infected, Singapore Islamic authorities immediately closed four mosques which they had visited after returning


6. German agency declares AfD wing `extremist`

• Germany will step up surveillance of a radical wing of the far right Alternative for Germany (AfD) party after the domestic intelligence agency designated it as an extremist entity that threatens democracy.
• Thursday`s decision by the BfV intelligence agency to increase monitoring of `Der Fluegel` The Wing deals a blow to Germany`s biggest opposition party, undermining its efforts to fend off accusations that it harbours racist views.
• The AfD has ridden a wave of anger at Chancellor Angela Merkel`s 2015 decision to welcome almost one million asylum seekers, and the BfV decision follows fatal attacks on Jews, Muslims and a liberal politician in Germany.


7. Chef who helped spark dining revolution passes away

• French chef Michel Roux, widely acknowledged as helping kick start modern restaurant dining in Britain with `Le Gavroche` in London, has died at the age of 78, his scholarship fund said on March 12, 2020.
• `We are deeply saddened to have lost our founding father, Michel Roux OBE,` said a statement from the Roux Scholarship, a competition set up by the chef and his brother Albert to identify new talent.
• Roux, who had battled pulmonary fibrosis for some time, followed his brother to London in the 1960s where the pair opened the signature restaurant in 1967, at a time when Britain`s reputation for cuisine was in tatters


8. US stops flights from Europe, Riyadh expands travel restrictions

• Travellers scrambled to rebook fights and markets reeled on March 12, 2020 after US President Donald Trump imposed sweeping restrictions on travel from Europe, hitting battered airlines and heightening global alarm over coronavirus.
• Saudi Arabia extended flight bans to the European Union and other countries, including Pakistan, after the number of coronavirus infections shot up in the region.
• But China, where the disease originated, said its epidemic had peaked and the global spread could be over by June if other nations applied similarly aggressive containment measures as Beijing`s communist government


9. `Inappropriate` remarks Imran Nazir`s assembly membership suspended

• The Punjab Assembly membership of former provincial minister Khwaja Imran Nazir was suspended and he was barred from attending rest of the sittings of the ongoing session for uttering `inappropriate` remarks against the panel of chairmen as well as the law minister on March 12, 2020.
• Panel of chairmen Mian Shafi banned the PML-N MPA`s entry into the house for the session for using inappropriate words for Law Minister Raja Basharat during discussion on spread of polio virus and fares of Orange Line Metro Train.


10. Blazing Babar-Sharjeel stand propels Kings to thumping win over Qalandars

• A brilliant, hard-hitting unbeaten opening stand between Babar Azam and Sharjeel Khan helped Karachi Kings extract sweet revenge against arch-rivals Lahore Qalandars by a thumping 10-wicket margin at the National Stadium on March 12, 2020 night while putting them on verge of qualification for the playoffs of the HBL Pakistan Super League 2020.
• In the last fixture played in front of spectators numbering between 25,000 and 27,000 at the NSK on Thursday Karachi Kings` fourth success catapulted them from fifth to second position in the standings and put them level alongside now third-placed Peshawar Zalmi on nine points, but with an extra game still in hand.
