1. Punjab raises workers` minimum wage to Rs20,000

• Punjab Chief Minister Usman Buzdar on May 1, 2021 announced an increase in minimum wage of workers, fixing it at Rs20,000 per month.
• Chairing a meeting at the CM office on provision of relief to labourers, Mr Buzdar said welfare of labourers and workers was his government`s top priority, and Punjab had become the only province to raise the minimum wage to Rs20,000 from the existing Rs18,000.
• Over the past three years, government had gradually increased the minimum wage by Rs5,000 and would continue to do so in the future as well. He men-tioned that the former rulers had added only Rs3,000 to the minimum wage in their five years in power


2. Pakistan`s first doctorate in nursing awarded to AKU fellow

• Pakistan`s first-ever doctorate in nursing has been awarded by the Aga Khan University`s School of Nursing and Midwifery to Khairulnissa Ajani.
• As part of her PhD, Ms Ajani conducted research into hypertension or high blood pressure a condition that affects one in every three adults in Pakistan.
• Ms Ajani`s research found low levels of physical activity and poor adherence to a hypertension-friendly diet among people with high blood pressure. Interestingly, women, in particular, tended to focus more on their family`s well-being while neglecting their own. Her study also emphasises the importance of family support in encouraging a patient to take care of his or her health


3. Setting up of special courts to conduct rape trial delayed

• Establishment of special courts to conduct fast-track trials in rape cases as provided in the Anti-Rape (Investigation and Trial) Ordinance 2020 has been delayed.
• The Pakistan Tehreek-i-Insaf government in December last year introduced the anti-rape law. Prime Minister Imran Khan and his cabinet approved the legal measure in Nov 2020 and President Arif Alvi signed it into law on Dec 15.
• Special fast-track courts were proposed to hear rape cases and were supposed to pronounce a verdict within four months


4. Police stations in Islamabad to get direct funding

• The government has decided to directly release funds to police stations in Islamabad for day-to-day expenditures, including fuel for vehicles and maintenance of buildings.
• Police officers told that the direct release of funds to the police stations was part of the newly-introduced Criminal Justice System initiated on the directives of Prime Minster Imran Khan.
• In this regard, Inspector General of Police (IGP) Qazi Jamilur Rehman has initiated a summery and started working on police station-based budgeting, they added


5. Troika wants no setback to Afghan parleys during pullout

• The countries that are part of the `extended troika` on Afghanistan have called for sustained peace process, reduction in violence in Afghanistan and safety and security of the diplomatic personnel and property and foreign forces in the war-ravaged country as US and NATO troops withdraw from there.
• The `extended troika` comprising the US, Russia, China and Pakistan met in Doha on Friday. The last meeting of the format set up by Russia was held on March 18.


6. Progress noted at diplomats` talks on Iran nuclear deal

• High-ranking diplomats from China, Germany, France, Russia and Britain made progress at talks on Saturday focused on bringing the United States back into their landmark nuclear deal with Iran, but said they need more work and time to bring about a future agreement.
• After the meeting, Russia`s top representative, Mikhail Ulyanov, tweeted that members of the Joint Comprehensive Plan of Action, or JCPOA, noted today the indisputable progress made at the Vienna talks on restoration of the nuclear deal.


7. Kyrgyzstan, Tajikistan agree ceasefire after border clashes

• Kyrgyzstan and Tajikistan agreed what they called a complete ceasefire on May 1, 2021 after reports of fresh shooting and troop build-ups in the aftermath of border clashes earlier this week that killed 49 people.
• The heads of the countries` state security bodies announced the agreement in a joint briefing in Kyrgyzstan hours after Kyrgyzstan`s border guard service said Tajik troops opened fire on Kyrgyz vehicles on their side of the border


8. US begins withdrawing last troops from Afghanistan

• The United States formally began withdrawing its last troops from Afghanistan on May 1, 2021, bringing its longest war nearer to an end but also heralding an uncertain future for a country in the tightening grip of emboldened Taliban.
• US officials on the ground say the withdrawal is already a work in progress and May 1 is just a continuation but Washington has made an issue of the date because itis a deadline agreed with the Taliban in 2020 to complete the pullout.


9. NASA`s Mars helicopter enters new phase

• After exceeding all expectations with its initial four test flights, the first ever by an aircraft over the surface of another planet, NASA`s tiny Mars robot helicopter In genuity is ready for graduation.
• The US space agency announced on Friday that Ingenuity is shifting from a pure proof-of-concept, technology demonstration mode to a more ambitious mission gauging how aerial scouting and other functions might benefit future scientific exploration of the Red Planet.
• Ingenuity`s 30-day planned project extension was outlined during a briefing from its mission control centre at NASA`s Jet Propulsion Laboratory (JPL) near Los Angeles, where the twin-rotor aircraft was designed and built


10. Hasan stars as Pakistan rout Zimbabwe by innings

• Fast bowler Hasan Ali registered career best figures of 5-36 to lead Pakistan to a comprehensive innings and 116-run annihilation of Zimbabwe in the first Test with more than two days to spare in Harare on May 1, 2021.
• The 26-year-old finished with 9-89 in the match as Zimbabwe`s batting crumbled for the second time in the match, all out for 134 with an hour remaining on the third day at Harare Sports Club.
• The victory gives Pakistan a 1-0 lead in the two-match series
