1. Govt unveils comprehensive plan for broad-based poll reform

• Inviting the opposition parties again for talks on electoral reforms, the government on May 3, 2021 vowed to go ahead with its reforms plan even without their support, claiming to have the needed parliamentary strength to carry out most of the proposed changes to the election laws, including the use of electronic voting machines (EVMs).
• Speaking at a news conference, federal Minister for Information and Broadcasting Fawad Chaudhry and Adviser to the Prime Minister on Parliamentary Affairs Babar Awan presented salient features of the proposed reforms for which they would have to bring amendments to the Elections Act 2017 as well as the Constitution


2. Prime Minister asks OIC to counter Islamophobia

• Prime Minister Imran Khan on May 3, 2021 urged the Organisation of Islamic Cooperation (OIC) to vehemently counter Islamophobia and falsely equating of Islam with radicalism and terrorism.
• He also took serious note of the recent European Parliament`s resolution to review GSP plus status of Pakistan and said the government would hold negotiation with the European Union (EU) to delink the country`s GSP Plus status with blasphemy issues.
• The prime minister presided over two meetings one with over 30 OIC ambassadors and the other with the ruling Pakistan Tehrik-i-Insaf (PTI) leaders.


3. Covid aggravated inequalities in Pakistan: HRCP report

• The annual report of Human Rights Commission of Pakistan finds that the Covid-19 has aggravated existing inequalities in the country, leaving millions of vulnerable workers at risk of losing their livelihoods.
• `The Benazir income support and Ehsaas programmes, which the government sensibly made part of its approach to the pandemic, likely saved thousands of households from sinking deeper into poverty, but these programmes are only a small facet of what a robust, pro-poor strategy should look like. A pivotal step by the government could be to make the right to health a fundamental right under the constitution and invest in preparedness, quality and access,` said the report, titled the State of Human Rights in 2020.


4. Summary finalised for special courts to conclude rape cases in 120 days

• The law ministry has finalised a summary for establishment of special courts that would conclude the trial of accused in rape cases in 120 days.
• The ministry has proposed that the courts of district and sessions judges will be designated as special courts for speedy trial of accused persons.
• According to a law ministry spokesperson, the summary will be forwarded to the president and after his approval a notification will be issued which will be published in the official gazette.


5. WHO donates ambulances to Balochistan

• The World Health Organisation on May 3, 2021 handed over ambulances and motorcycles to Balochistan Chief Minister Jam Kamal Khan Alyani for use by the provincial health department.
• A delegation led by WHO representative in Pakistan Dr Palitha Gunarathna Mahipala called on Mr Alyani at the CM secretariat. They discussed the current situation of Covid-19, health policy, improvement of human resources, issues of mutual interest including issuance of health cards.
• Mr Alyani welcomed Dr Mahipala and appreciated the continued support provided by the WHO for the betterment of the public health sector in Balochistan


6. US, Britain tell China and Russia: Western alliance is not over yet

• The Group of Seven Western democracies aims to court new allies to counter challenges from China and Russia without holding Beijing down and while pursuing more stable ties with the Kremlin, two of its top diplomats said on May 3, 2021.
• Ahead of the first in-person G7 foreign ministers meeting since 2019, US President Joe Biden`s secretary of state, Antony Blinken, sought to foster a message of multilateralism after four years of Twitter-diplomacy under Donald Trump variously shocked, bewildered and alarmed many Western allies.
• Founded in 1975 as a forum for the West`s richest nations to discuss crises such as the OPEC oil embargo, the G7 this week is discussing China and Russia as well as battling the Covid-19 pandemic and the spread of climate change


7. Germany smashes online child porn network

• German police said on May 3, 2021 they had shut down `one of the biggest darknet child pornography platforms in the world` and arrested four of its members in a series of raids in mid April.
• The platform, named as `Boys town` had existed since 2019, counted over 400,000 members and was `set up for the worldwide exchange of child pornography, in particular images of the abuse of boys`, federal police said in a statement


8. Verizon sells internet trailblazers Yahoo and AOL for $5bn

• Yahoo and AOL are being sold again, this time to a private equity firm.
• Wireless company Verizon will sell Verizon Media, which consists of the once-pioneering tech platforms, to Apollo Global Management in a $5 billion deal.
• Verizon said May 3, 2021 that it will keep a 10pc stake in the new company, which will be called Yahoo.
• Yahoo at the end of the last century was the face of the internet, preceding the behemoth tech platforms to follow, such as Google and Facebook.


9. Acting chief justice of AJK high court dies

• Justice Mohammad Shiraz Kiani, senior most judge of the Azad Jammu and Kashmir (AJK) High Court, passed away in an Islamabad hospital on May 3, 2021 morning of brain paralysis after more than a month long hospitalisation.
• Born in August 1965 in Ratta village of Mirpur district, Justice Kiani had joined judicial services as a civil judge in October 1995 and was elevated to the bench of the High Court in September 2015 `ona ccount of his lengthy and meritorious service in the subordinate Judiciary,` according to the court`s website.
• On March 19 this year, AJK president had appointed him as acting chief justice to assume the office after the retirement of his predecessor Justice Azhar Saleem Babar on March 22.


10. IPL game postponed after two players test positive for Covid-19

• The Indian Premier League (IPL) postponed a match because of the coronavirus crisis for the first time on May 3, 2021 after two players tested positive amid a catastrophic surge of cases in the country, raising doubts over the fate of this year`s edition of the world`s richest Twenty20 tournament.
• The match between Royal Challengers Bangalore and Kolkata Knight Riders was postponed hours before its scheduled start after two Kolkata players tested positive. Varun Chakravarthy and Sandeep Warrier are self-isolating after becoming the first players to test positive for Covid-19 inside the IPL bubble since the 2021 season started on April 9
