1. Afghanistan seeks Pakistan`s help for durable peace

• Afghan President Ashraf Ghani on May 10, 2021 urged Pakistan to help achieve durable peace in Afghanistan.
• He said this while talking to Army Chief Gen Qamar Bajwa, who called on him during his day-long visit to Kabul.
• Gen Bajwa visited Afghanistan along with ISI Director General Lt Gen Faiz Hamid after Pakistani officials successfully convinced the Taliban to commit to a three-day ceasefire on the occasion of upcoming Eidul Fitr

2. Pakistan, Saudi Arabia sign prisoner transfer deal

• A close aide to the prime minister announced on May 10, 2021 that Islamabad and Riyadh had signed a prisoner transfer agreement to repatriate over 2,000 Pakistani prisoners languishing in Saudi Arabia`s jails.
• Zulfi Bukhari, Special Assistant to the Prime Minister on Overseas Pakistanis, made this announcement on Twitter saying `Pak & KSA have signed prisoner transfer agreement for return of 2,107 Pakistani prisoners languishing in KSA jails`

3. Cotton import bill hits $1.84bn in 9MFY21

• The country spent $1.838 billion on cotton imports during nine months of the current fiscal year (9MFY21) up 46 per cent from $1.258bn in the same period a year ago.
• The 9MFY21 lint imports surpassed the FY20 total cotton import bill of $1.704bn. Cotton import bill in FY19 was $1.65bn.
• Meanwhile, sharp decline in cotton production from over 14 million bales in 2012 to 5.6m bales this year has shattered the hopes of the textile industry which was seeking to improve its performance

4. Sindh govt appoints Imran Minhas as Karachi police chief

• The Sindh government on May 10, 2021 removed Karachi police chief Ghulam Nabi Memon and posted Additional Inspector General Imran Yaqub Minhas as the new police chief of the metropolis.
• According to a notification issued by Sindh Chief Secretary Mumtaz Ali Shah, Addl IG Minhas, a grade-21 officer presently serving as the head of the Special Branch, is transferred and posted as the Addl IG Karachi range.
• Mr Memon, also a grade-21officer who was appointed as Karachi police chief in July 2019, is appointed as Addl IG Special Branch in place of Mr Minhas

5. Taliban, Afghan govt declare three-day Eid ceasefire

• The Taliban and Afghan government on May 10, 2021 declared a three-day ceasefire for this week`s Eid ul Fitr holiday, following a sharp spike in violence as Washington goes about withdrawing its remaining troops from Afghanistan.
• Violence has soared since May 1 the deadline missed by the United States to withdraw the last of its troops and while the Taliban have avoided engaging American forces, attacks against government and civilian targets have not stopped.

6. 20 killed as Israel targets Hamas positions in Gaza

• Twenty people, including a Hamas commander, were killed in Gaza Strip on May 10, 2021, making it one of the bloodiest days of fighting in several years.
• The Israeli military said it struck a number of Hamas targets in response to continued rocket fire out of Gaza. It said eight sites were struck.
• Hamas fired dozens of rockets into Israel, including a barrage that set off air raid sirens as far away as Jerusalem, after almost 300 Palestinians were hurt in clashes with Israeli police at Al Aqsa mosque

7. Indian virus variant found in Thai travellers from Pakistan

• Health authorities in Thailand on May 10, 2021 said they had confirmed the country`s first cases of the Indian variant of the coronavirus, in a Thai woman and her four year-old son who have been in state quarantine since arriving from Pakistan.
• The finding comes as Thailand battles a new wave of coronavirus that began at the beginning of April, originating in upmarket entertainment venues in Bangkok and spawning clusters in several crowded slum communities. Many of the recent cases involve the British variant of the virus, which is more infectious than the original form found last year

8. WHO terms Indian variant a global concern

• The World Health Organisation said on May 10, 2021 that the B.1.617 variant first identified in India last year was being classified as a variant of global concern.
• `We classify it as a variant of concern at a global level,` Maria Van Kerkhove, WHO technical lead on Covid-19, told a briefing. `There is some available information to suggest increased transmissibility.
• Indian coronavirus infections and deaths held close to record daily highs on Monday, increasing calls for the government of Prime Minister Narendra Modi to lock down the world`s second-most populous country

9. Amazon blocked 10bn listings in counterfeit crackdown

• Amazon, which has been under pressure from shoppers, brands and lawmakers to crack down on counterfeits on its site, said on May 10, 2021 that it blocked more than 10 billion suspected phony listings last year before any of their offerings could be sold.
• The numbers were released in Amazon`s first report on its anti-counterfeiting efforts since it announced new tools and technologies in 2019.
• The number of blocked phony listings last year was up about 67 per cent from the year before

10. Pakistan crush hapless Zimbabwe to wrap up Test series

• New-ball spearhead Shaheen Shah Afridi took a career-best five for 52 as Pakistan annihilated the hapless Zimbabwe by an innings and 147 runs early on the fourth day of the second Test while wrapping up a clinical 2-0 rout at the Harare Sports Club on May 10, 2021.
• Pakistan needed just one wicket at the start of the day and it took a little over 20 minutes for Shaheen to induce an edge from Zimbabwe Test debutant Luke Jongwe (37) to wicket-keeper Mohammad Rizwan, wrapping up the contest as Zimbabwe were bowled out for 231 in their second innings
