6. Putin warns Finland, Sweden of `response` over Nato bid

• Russian President Vladimir Putin warned Finland and Sweden on May 16, 2022 to expect a `response` for applying to join Nato as Ukraine braced for a new push by Moscow`s forces in its eastern Donbas region.
• Swedish Prime Minister Magdalena Andersson on May 16, 2022 confirmed her country would apply to join the military alliance, the day after Finland which shares a 1,300-kilometre border with Russia said the same.
• The two Nordic countries are poised to give up decades of military non-alignment over fears they could be next in line following Moscow`s invasion of Ukraine on Feb 24


7. Sri Lanka down to last day of petrol

• Sri Lanka`s new prime minister said on May 16, 2022 the crisis-hit nation was down to its last day of petrol, as the country`s power minister told citizens not to join the lengthy fuel queues that have galvanised weeks of anti-government protests.
• Ranil Wickreme singhe, appointed prime minister on Thursday, said in an address to the nation the country urgently needed $75 million in foreign exchange to pay for essential imports.
• `At the moment, we only have petrol stocks for a single day. The next couple of months will be the most difficult ones of our lives,` he said


8. Indian court prohibits large prayer gatherings at mosque

• A court in north India on May 16, 2022 ordered authorities to limit large Muslim prayer gatherings in the historic Gyanvapi mosque in Varanasi after a survey team found relics of the Hindu god Shiva and other Hindu symbols there, lawyers involved in the case said.
• Earlier this month, the court in Varanasi set up a team to survey the premises after five women sought permission to perform Hindu rituals in one of its quarters saying that a Hindu temple once stood at the present mosque site.
• The Gyanvapi mosque, located in the political constituency of Prime Minister Narendra Modi, is one of the three large mosques in Uttar Pradesh. Prominent groups believe it was built after demolishing a historic temple


9. First commercial flight in six years leaves rebel-held Yemen capital

• The first commercial flight in nearly six years took off from Yemen`s rebel-held capital on May 16, 2022, a major step forward in a peace process that has provided rare relief from conflict.
• The Yemenia plane carrying 126passengers, including hospital patients needing treatment abroad and their relatives, took off from Sanaa for the Jordanian capital Amman just after 9am (0600 GMT).
• Before take-off, the plane with red and-blue tail livery taxied through an honour guard of two fire trucks spraying jets of water. It landed in Amman before 0900 GMT.


10. Abdul Joshi, Shehroze Kashif conquer two highest peaks

• Two Pakistani climbers separately summited the world`s highest peak, Mount Everest, and fourth highest, Lhotse, in Nepal on May 16, 2022 morning.
• Abdul Joshi from the Shimshal valley of Hunza in Gilgit-Baltistan, who scaled the 8,849-metre Mount Everest, is part of a 13-member expedition team, led by Nepalese mountaineer Mingma Gyalje Sherpa (Mingma G). While 20-year-old Shehroze Kashif set the record for becoming the youngest mountaineer in the world to summit four highest peaks after scaling the 8,516m Lhotse.
