1. Bill for protection of media persons presented in Sindh Assembly

• The journalists and other media practitioners shall have protection against disclosure of professional sources of information under The Sindh Protection of Journalists and other Media Practitioners Bill 2021 that also bars government officials and institutions from forcing them to disclose the identity of their professional sources.
• According to the draft of the new media law, the protected information gathered by journalists and other media practitioners includes, but is not limited to, information gathered in the field through interviews or personal observations, telephone conversations, and information gathered online or through digital platforms.

2. WHO urged to help resolve vaccine acceptability issue

• The Pakistan Medical Association (PMA) has urged the World Health Organisation (WHO) to play its role in getting all vaccines acceptable by countries which have made it mandatory for visitors to be inoculated by certain brands only.
• On the other hand, as the number of positive cases among passengers from the UAE and Bahrain is increasing, the National Command and Operation Centre (NCOC) has decided that only Polymerase Chain Reaction (PCR) results of authorised laboratories will be accepted.
• Meanwhile, a number of commercial and tourism sectors will be opening across the country from Monday (today)

3. Pakistan wins WHO`s award for anti-tobacco campaign

• While anti-tobacco advocates have been criticising policies of the government and its failure to implement the Pictorial Health Warning (PHW) due since June 30, 2020, the World Health Organisation (WHO) regional office for the eastern Mediterranean has announced the World No Tobacco Day 2021 Award for Pakistan for its effective anti-tobacco campaign.
• Former technical head of the Health Ministry`s Tobacco Control Cell (TCC) and Focal Person for WHO`s Framework Convention on Tobacco Control (FCTC) Dr Ziauddin Islam said the award had been given to Pakistan due to efforts made during the last decade.
• WHO was asked to nominate individuals or organisations from each of the six WHO regions for their accomplishments in controlling tobacco use

4. Pakistan to continue giving air, ground access, says Pentagon

• Pakistan has allowed the US military to use its airspace and given ground access so that it can support its presence in Afghanistan, according to a Pentagon official.
• David F. Helvey, Assistant Secretary of Defence for Indo-Pacific Affairs, told the US Senate Armed Services Committee last week that the United States would continue its conversation with Pakistan because it had a critical role in restoring peace to Afghanistan.
• The official was replying to a question from Senator Joe Manchin, a West Virginia Democrat, who asked him to `outline your assessment of Pakistan, and particularly of Pakistani intelligence agencies, and the role you expect them to play in our future`.

5. UN calls for `political process` amid Gaza reconstruction

• A UN official in Gaza on May 23, 2021 called for a `genuine political process` to avert further bloodshed after Israeli atrocities ravaged the Palestinian enclave.
• As thousands of Gazans slowly tried to piece back together their lives, top UN staff visited the territory after an Egyptian-brokered ceasefire on Friday halted 11 days of bombardment.
• On Sunday, in a badly-damaged district of Gaza city, volunteers swept up clouds of dust at the feet of collapsed buildings, while others shovelled debris onto the back of a donkey-drawn cart

6. India battles fungal threat as virus deaths near 300,000

• Doctors in India are fighting a fatal fungal infection affecting Covid-19 patients or those who have recovered from the disease amid a coronavirus surge that has driven the country`s fatalities to nearly 300,000.
• The life-threatening condition, known as mucormycosis, is relatively rare but doctors suspect that the sudden increase in the infection could further complicate India`s fight against the pandemic.
• India has reported more than 26 million confirmed cases of the coronavirus since the pandemic began, with almost half occurring in the past two months. On Sunday, the Health Ministry reported 3,741 new deaths, driving India`s confirmed fatalities to 299,266

7. Shamed BBC journalist apologises over Diana interview

• Martin Bashir, the BBC journalist who tricked princess Diana into giving an explosive interview, on May 23, 2021 apologised to Princes William and Harry, but said claims linking his actions to her death were `unreasonable`.
• A report by retired senior judge John Dyson published on Thursday found that Bashir commissioned faked bank statements that falsely suggested some of Diana`s closest aides were being paid by the security services to keep tabs on her.
• Bashir, 58, then showed them to Diana`s brother Charles Spencer in a successful bid to convince him to arrange a meeting between himself and Diana and earn her trust

8. Three killed in shooting outside US bar

• At least three people were killed and three others wounded in a shooting on May 23, 2021 outside a bar in Youngstown, Ohio, police said.
• Chief Carl Davis of the Youngstown police department said gunfire was reported shortly after 2am in the area of the Torch Club Bar & Grille in Youngstown.
• Davis said three people were dead of apparent gunshot wounds and at least three others were wounded, one in critical condition

9. France fears `apartheid` in Israel if Palestinians don`t get their own state

• French Foreign Minister Jean-Yves Le Drian warned on May 23, 2021 of the risk of `long-lasting apartheid` in Israel in the event the Palestinians fail to obtain their own state.
• Le Drian is one of the first senior French officials to use the term `apartheid` in reference to Israel, which has angrily denied any policy of racial discrimination.
• The veteran politician made the remarks in an interview with RTL radio and Le Figaro newspaper in reference to the clashes between Jews and Arabs that erupted in several Israeli cities during the latest conflict

10. Asia Cup postponed again

• The Asia Cup has been post poned for a second year after the Asian Cricket Council (ACC) said on May 23, 2021 there was no room on the calendar to host the rescheduled tournament.
• The 2020 edition was postponed to 2021 due to the Covid-19 pandemic but the ACC said a packed Future Tours Programme (FTP) made it impossible to hold it this year and it would be held in 2023 instead.
• England are set to host Sri Lanka, Pakistan and India in various formats between June and September while the ICC Twenty20 World Cup is scheduled to take place in India in October November
