1. Court rejects plea against Pakistan in Reko Diq case

• The High Court of Justice in the British Virgin Islands (BVI) on May 25, 2021 ruled in favour of Pakistan in a case initiated by Tethyan Copper Company (TCC) for attachment of Pakistan`s major assets abroad, including two PIA hotels in New York and Paris, in the Reko Dig international arbitration.
• `Pakistan has won the BVI case initiated by TCC to enforce the ICSID award,` stated the International Disputes Unit (IDU), housed inside the attorney general office on the Supreme Court premises, also explaining that all ex-parte orders obtained by TCC earlier have been set aside


2. Online assessment platform for students launched

• The Inter-Board Committee of Chairmen (IBCC) and Learning Pitch that uses technology and modern practices to promote education, have launched a free online assessment platform to aid students during the pandemic.
• A memorandum of understanding (MoU) was signed between IBCC Secretary Dr Ghulam Ali Mallah and Learning Pitch`s Chief Executive Officer (CEO) Syed Wajahat on May 25, 2021.
• The IBCC is the umbrella board of all 29 educational boards in the country


3. PHC orders suspension of poultry supply to Afghanistan

• The Peshawar High Court on May 25, 2021 directed the deputy commissioners of the merged tribal districts to stop the transportation of poultry products to Afghanistan in their respective districts and submit their reports to the court.
• A bench consisting of Chief Justice Qaiser Rashid Khan and Justice Syed Arshad Ali declared that the provincial food secretary should the focal person for the exercise to be supervised by the chief secretary


4. PIA launches Karachi-Skardu flights

• Pakistan International Airlines (PIA) has started direct flights from Karachi to Skardu to promote tourism in Gilgit-Baltistan.
• The first PIA Airbus-320 with 178 passengers and eight crew members landed at the Skardu Airport on Monday.
• The airline will operate two weekly flights from Karachi to Skardu.
• Earlier on April 7, the national carrier had launched direct flight operation from Lahore to Skardu twice a week


5. 19 companies authorised to manufacture mobile sets

• As the mobile sets assembling licences are set to expire next month, the Pakistan Telecommunication Authority (PTA) on May 25, 2021 issued Mobile Device Manufacturing Authorisation to 19 foreign and local companies for the production of mobile devices locally.
• The licences have been issued under the Mobile Device Manufacturing (MDM) Regulations, 2021, issued by the PTA in January this year.
• Among the prominent companies to obtain the manufacturing licences are Oppo and Vivo. The companies will have to complete the already approved deletion programme within two years


6. Facebook partners with Nayatel for fibre network in Pakistan

• In its first ever investment in Pakistan, Facebook has partnered with Nayatel to improve and expand connectivity across the country.
• Under this partnership, Nayatel will own, build, maintain, and operate a new fibre network and provide wholesale capacity to mobile operators and ISPs while Facebook will invest in the fibre build and support network planning.
• This high-speed fibre will connect thousands of sites by 2022, and improve capacity and geographical reach of internet to 10 to 15 million people across eight major cities in Pakistan


7. 1.4m Afghan refugees begin receiving new smartcards

• The National Database and Registration Authority (Nadra) will provide new biometric identity smartcards to 1.4 million Afghan refugees registered in Pakistan.
• Nadra began issuing the new smartcards on Tuesday and the process would be completed by the end of the year. The new cards would be valid till 2023.
• The new Proof of Registration (PoR) cards are legally recognised proof of identity and include enhanced security features.


8. Australia to close embassy in Afghanistan over security fears

• Australia on May 25, 2021 abruptly announced it will shutter its embassy in Afghanistan this week, expressing fears over the `increasingly uncertain security environment` in Kabul as foreign troops withdraw.
• The Taliban, who have ramped up violence across the country in recent weeks, reacted by saying they would provide a `safe environment` to diplomats and humanitarian organisations.
• The United States and allied forces are in the final stages of pulling out their remaining troops from Afghanistan, ending America`s longest-ever war, but heralding an uncertain future for a nation in the tightening grip of Taliban militants.


9. US to reopen consulate for Palestinians: Blinken

• Secretary of State Antony Blinken vowed on May 25, 2021 to rebuild US relations with Palestinians by reopening a consulate in Jerusalem and giving millions in aid to help the war-ravaged Gaza Strip.
• The announcements signalled a clean break with US policy under former president Donald Trump who had shuttered the diplomatic mission for Palestinians in 2019 and slashed aid to the Palestinian Authority


10. Johnson offers qualified apology for Islam remarks

• British Prime Minister Boris Johnson issued a qualified apology for offence caused by his past remarks about Islam in a report that criticised his Conservative Party over how it deals with complaints of Islamophobia.
• Johnson was interviewed for the report, commissioned by the Conservatives in response to criticism of how it handled discrimination and complaints. The report was conducted independently by Professor Swaran Singh who has served as a commissioner for the Equality and Human Rights Commission
