1. In a first, Rs4.143tr revenue collected in 11 months
• Pakistan`s top tax machinery on May 29, 2021 claimed to have crossed Rs4.143 trillion in 11 months of the current fiscal year against Rs3.536tr collected over the corresponding months of last year indicating a revival of economic activities in the country.
• More revenue ranging between Rs15bn and Rs20bn will come into the government kitty in the last two days (May 30-31) of the current month, which will further improve the overall revenue collection in the July-May period of the current fiscal year.
• Soon after the revenue collection data was shared with Prime Minister Imran Khan, the premier took to Twitter commending the Federal Board of Revenue (FBR) for crossing a `historic milestone` by collecting more than Rs4 trillion in taxes for the first time in any fiscal year
2. Drap to register Pfizer vaccine as doses arrive
• The arrival of Pfizer vaccine has caught government officials unawares, with experts questioning its legality in the absence of necessary clearance and registration.
• In the wake of this development, the Drug Regulatory Authority of Pakistan (Drap) has called a meeting of its registration board on June 1 (Tuesday)to register Pfizer vaccine.
• A senior official of the National Health Services (NHS) ministry, on the other hand, claimed that approval to import the vaccine had been obtained from Drap on April 27
3. Three Baltistan varsity teachers make it to world scientist rankings
• Three teachers of the University of Baltistan Skardu have been included in the list of `World Scientist and University Rankings 2021` issued by AD Scientific Index, which releases rankings of scientists from around the world based on their achievements, claims the varsity.
• The ranking is based on H-Index, I-10-Index and total citation of the research articles published in well-reputed journals of various disciplines, according to a press release issued by the varsity.
• The H-index reflects both the number of publications and the number of citations per publication
4. CDWP approves 15 projects worth Rs169bn
• The Central Development Working Party (CDWP) has cleared 15 projects worth Rs169.2 billion related to transport, communication and construction sectors.
• A CDWP meeting chaired by Deputy Chairman Planning Commission (PC) Jehanzeb Khan has recommended four projects worth Rs124.09bn to the Executive Committee of the National Economic Council (ECNEC) for further consideration.
• The CDWP cleared 11 development projects with a cumulative cost of Rs45.09bn
5. Vietnam discovers new hybrid virus variant
• Vietnam has discovered a new Covid-19 variant which spreads quickly by air and is a combination of the Indian and British strains, health officials confirmed on May 29, 2021.
• The country is struggling to deal with fresh outbreaks across more than half of its territory, including industrial zones and big cities such as Hanoi and Ho Chi Minh City.
• More than 6,800 cases including 47 deaths have been reported in Vietnam, with the lion`s share occurring since April
6. N. Korea turns to `volunteers` for coal mines, construction
• Orphans, conscripted soldiers, and students some appearing to be children are `volunteering` to work manual labour in North Korea, including in coal mines, farms, and large construction projects, the country`s state media have reported.
• Hundreds of graduates of orphan schools `volunteered to work in difficult fields` according to reports by state news agency KCNA.
• The reports did not specify the orphans` ages, but said they had graduated from middle schools, and photos published in state newspapers showed youths who appeared to be in their teens.
7. China successfully launches cargo resupply spacecraft
• China on May 29, 2021 successfully launched an automated cargo resupply spacecraft to rendezvous with an orbiting module, in the second of a series of missions needed to complete its first permanent space station.
• The Tianzhou-2, or `Heavenly Vessel` in Chinese, blasted off via a Long March-7 Y3 rocket from the Wenchang Space Launch Centre on the southern island of Hainan, the China Manned Space Engineering Office said.
• Tianzhou-2 is the second of 11 missions needed to complete China`s first self developed space station around 2022, and follows the launch of the key module Tianhe in late April
8. Bednarek wins 200m, as Kenyans dominate Doha meet
• American Kenneth Bednarek edged Canadian Andr De Grasse in a scintillating 200 metre race at the Doha Diamond League meeting as Kenyans dominated the middle distance competitions.
• Bednarek won in 19.88, one hundredth of a second ahead of De Grasse whose compatriot Aaron Brown was third (20.25) on a hot and humid night in the Qatari capital.
• Bednarek was delighted with the win even though he said he was a bit nervous. `But I am excited that I got in the first place. Pil try to be even better again the next time
9. Chelsea beat Man City to win Champions League
• Chelsea won the Champions League for the second time as a Kai Havertz goal secured a tense 1-0 victory over Manchester City in May 29, 2021`s final in Porto, shattering Pep Guardiola`s dream of lifting the trophy for the third time, a decade on from his last triumph.
• Havertz rounded Ederson to score three minutes before half-time at the Estadio do Dragao and the Chelsea players ran to the far end of the pitch to celebrate with the German
10. IPL to be completed in UAE later this year
• The remaining matches of the Indian Premier League (IPL), which was suspended earlier this month, will be complete d in the United Arab Emirates in September and October, the BCCI said on May 29, 2021.
• The Board of Control for Cricket in India (BBCI said in a statement that they had asked the International Cricket Council (ICC) for more time to make a call on whether India would be able to host the Twenty20 World Cup in October and November
