1. Kuwait agrees to lift bar on visas for Pakistanis

• After a decade-long suspension, Kuwait on May 30, 2021 decided to resume granting visas to Pakistani families and businessmen.
• The Kuwaiti government took the decision during a meeting between Kuwaiti Prime Minister Sheikh Sabah Al-Khalid Al-Sabah and Interior Minister Sheikh Rashid Ahmed in Kuwait City.
• During the meeting it was also decided that Kuwait would issue technical visas for Pakistani workers in medical and oil fields. The interior minister, who is on an official visit to Kuwait, handed over a special letter of Prime Minister Imran Khan to his Kuwaiti counterpart


2. Pakistani contracted Indian variant in Gulf

• The National Command and Operation Centre (NCOC) released details of the only confirmed Pakistani infected by the Indian variant of Covid-19.
• On the other hand, Prime Minister Imran Khan is set to chair a meeting of the National Coordination Committee (NCC) on Monday (May 31, 2021), during which the virus situation in the country and the progress of the steps taken to check its spread will be discussed.
• Besides, 56 patients succumbed to the dreaded virus and 2,697 more were infected during the last 24 hours as over seven million vaccines were administered across the country


3. Pakistan, Iraq to enhance security, defence cooperation

• Foreign Minister Shah Mahmood Qureshi and Iraq`s Minister for Interior Othman Ali Farhood Moshir Al Ghanimi agreed on the need for exchanging delegations with a view to enhancing cooperation in security matters, countering narcotics smuggling and visa facilitation.
• During a meeting, Mr Qureshi highlighted the professional expertise and commitment of Pakistan`s armed forces and law enforcement agencies in effectively dealing with the challenge of terrorism


4. Rangers to stay in tribal area

• Permanent deployment of Rangers at Safaido Pass has been decided to check the activities of gangsters in tribal as well as settle areas of the division.
• After the killing of two captives by Ladi gang, the prime minister of Pakistan had taken notice of the inhuman act and directed law enforcement agencies to launch an operation against the gang.
• The LEAs conducted a massive joint operation against the criminals of the Ladi gang and arrested 11 facilitators but gangsters managed to flee from their hideouts.


5. Sri Lanka to sue Singapore ship owners over marine pollution

• Sri Lankan authorities said they will sue the owners of a Singapore-registered cargo carrier which has burned for 11 straight days off the island`s west coast and caused some of its worst-ever marine pollution.
• Police said a criminal investigation was also launched into the blaze aboard the MV X-Press Pearl, which was carrying 25 tonnes of nitric acid and a huge amount of plastic raw materials.
• The intense fire, still burning at the rear of the 186 metre (610 feet) vessel, has destroyed much of the cargo, some of which also fell into the Indian Ocean.


6. Cairo, Tel Aviv hold talks for `permanent ceasefire`

• Israeli and Egyptian officials held talks in both countries aimed at bolstering the Cairo-brokered ceasefire that ended the latest deadly flare-up of violence between the Jewish state and Gaza`s Hamas rulers.
• Israeli Prime Minister Benjamin Netanyahu met Egyptian intelligence chief Abbas Kamel in Jerusalem to discuss `strengthening cooperation` between their countries, Netanyahu`s office said


7. British PM weds fiancée in `secret` ceremony

• British Prime Minister Boris Johnson and his fiancée Carrie Symonds married over the weekend, his office confirmed on Sunday, in what media reports have described as a `secret ceremony`.
• He is only the second British prime minister to marry while in power, and the first in nearly two centuries. The last was Robert Jenkinson in 1822.
• `The prime minister and Ms Symonds were married yesterday afternoon in a small ceremony at Westminster Cathedral,` a Downing Street spokesman said. `The couple will celebrate their wedding with family and friends next summer


8. Osaka wins, fined over media boycott

• Naomi Osaka was fined $15,000 at the French Open for skipping a post-match news conference after her first-round victory on May 30, 2021 and threatened by all four Grand Slam tournaments with stiffer penalties, including being defaulted, if she continues to avoid meeting with the media.
• The fine will come out of Osaka`s prize money and was announced in a joint statement from the president of the French tennis federation, Gilles Moretton, and the heads of the other majors.


9. Hong Kong mountaineer on a high after fastest Everest climb by a woman

• Former Hong Kong schoolteacher Tsang Yin-hung said on May 30, 2021 she always believed in aiming high after setting a new record for the fastest ascent of Everest by a woman.
• Tsang scaled the 8,848.86-metre (29,031 feet) mountain in 25 hours and 50 minutes, a Nepal government officer who recorded her time said on Thursday.
• The 44-year-old reached the summit of the world`s highest peak on May 23 and arrived back in Kathmandu on Sunday


10. `Raindrops` singer B.J. Thomas dies

• Singer B.J. Thomas, known for his popular song Raindrops Keep Fallin on My Head, died on Saturday. He was 78.
• His death in Arlington, Texas, came after a lung cancer diagnosis.
• Thomas won five Grammy Awards between 1977 and 1981, but he first came to public attention in 1966 with his rendition of the Hank Williams country standard I`m So Lonesome I Could Cry. He followed that two years later with Hooked on a Feeling, which hit the top 10 on the Billboard Hot 100
