1. Centre-Sindh body for Karachi betterment holds first meeting

• The coordination committee comprising representatives of the federal and Sindh governments in its first formal meeting here on Saturday decided to remove `soft encroachments` from Karachi`s major storm-water drains.
• On Aug 19, leaders of the Pakistan Peoples Party, Pakistan Tehreek-i-Insaf and Muttahida Qaumi Movement-Pakistan had decided to form a coordination committee for collaboration between the federal and Sindh governments in six areas for the betterment of Karachi.
• Saturday`s meeting, held at the Chief Minister House in Karachi, was attended by CM Murad AliShah, provincial ministers Saeed Ghani and Nasir Shah, Federal Minister for Planning, Development and Special Initiative Asad Umar, Maritime Affairs Minister Ali Zaidi and IT and Telecom Minister Aminul Haque


2. Chaman border with Afghanistan reopens

• Pakistan has reopened its border with Afghanistan at Chaman after a gap of five months.
• The border at Chaman and other crossing points in Balochistan had been closed on March 2 after the outbreak of the coronavirus pandemic.
• The authorities said on Saturday that the border was opened on Friday after a series of high-level meetings between security officials, traders and the provincial government`s special committee.
• The Afghan Transit Trade as well as import and export between the two countries had been resumed.


3. World virus deaths top 800,000 as nations ramp up measures

• The global death toll from coronavirus has surpassed 800,000, with numerous countries ramping up restrictions in an effort to battle an eruption of new cases.
• Western Europe, particularly Spain, Italy Germany and France, has been enduring infection levels not seen in many months, sparking fears of a fullyfledged second wave.
• And in Asia, South Korea, which had largely brought the virus under control, became the latest country to announce it would boost restrictions to try to stem a new outbreak.


4. In first Iran visit, IAEA head will seek access to sites

• The UN nuclear watchdog`s chief Raf ael Grossi will make his first trip to Tehran in that role on August 24, 2020 to pressurize Iran to grant inspectors access to two suspected former atomic sites after a months-long standoff.
• The International Atomic Energy Agency`s 35-nation Board of Governors passed a resolution in June raising pressure on Iran to let inspectors into the sites mentioned in two quarterly IAEA reports `because they could still host undeclared nuclear material or traces of it`.
• Grossi would hold meetings with senior Iranian officials aimed at improving cooperation on Iran`s nuclear activities, the IAEA said


5. West African envoys meet Mali`s military junta after coup

• West African envoys held talks with Mali`s military junta on August 22, 2020 to try to push for a speedy return to civilian rule after a coup in the troubled nation.
• The delegation, headed by former Nigerian president Goodluck Jonathan, held talks for half an hour with soldiers who seized power on Tuesday, including new strongman colonel Assimi Goita, a journalist said.
• The envoys from the regional ECOWAS bloc also hope to meet ousted president Ibrahim Boubacar Keita, who is being detained by the junta at a military camp outside Bamako


6. Serbia quiet on fence building near border

• Serbia`s government has declined to comment on the construction of a fence that was ongoing on August 22, 2020 near its border with North Macedonia, a common crossing point for migrants traversing the Balkan region.
• The barrier is being erected on the southern frontier, close to an official border crossing and the Tabanovce transit camp for migrants on North Macedonia`s side, according to a photographer. Images of the fence were initially published by Radio Free Europe earlier in the week, while North Macedonia`s interior ministry told state media that it was set up on Serbian territory.
• Belgrade has, however, has remained silent, with the interior and foreign ministries, as well as the Prime Minister`s office, not responding to requests for comment.


7. Libya ceasefire first step on `arduous` path to peace

• A surprise ceasefire announcement by Libya`s rival administrations offers a glimmer of hope for peace, but analysts caution scepticism after years of violence and as multiple foreign forces back opposing sides.
• Fayez al-Sarraj, head of the UN-recognised Government of National Accord (GNA), based in the west in the capital Tripoli, and Aguila Saleh, speaker of the eastern-based parliament backed by military strongman Khalifa Haftar, each announced a ceasefire on Friday.
• The leaders, in separate statements, said they wanted to end fighting and hold elections, drawing praise from the UN, the EU and several Arab countries


8. `Unofficial` world`s oldest man dies in South Africa

• A 116-year-old survivor of the 1918 Spanish Flu believed to be among the world`s oldest people died on Saturday in South Africa, his family said.
• Born on May 8, 1904, Fredie Blom had `lived this long because of God`s grace,` he said this year.
• Guinness World Records lists the oldest currently living man as Briton Bob Weighton, aged 112, but South African media have described Blom as `unofficially` the world`s oldest


9. Gandhi`s iconic glasses sell for $340,000 in UK

• A pair of gold-plated glasses worn by Mahatma Gandhi has sold in Britain for 260,000 pounds ($340,000), the auction house said.
• `We found them just four weeks ago in our letterbox, left there by a gentleman whose uncle had been given them by Gandhi himself,` East Bristol Auctions wrote on Instagram after the sale late on Friday.

10. Wawrinka wins Prague event

• Former US Open champion Stan Wawrinka on August 22, 2020 won the second-tier Challenger tournament in Prague, on his return to action after a six-month break because of the coronavirus pandemic.
• Wawrinka, the 2016 US Open winner, ha selected to skip this year`s Grand Slam in New York citing the `health situation` in the city and instead focus on Roland Garros which starts on Sept 27.
• World number 17 Wawrinka defeated 253rd-ranked Aslan Karatsey of Russia 7-6(7-2), 6-4 in the Prague final on clay
