1. Govt, TTP agree on ceasefire as talks continue

• The government on November 8, 2021 confirmed for the first time that a ceasefire has been reached with the outlawed Tehreek-i-Taliban Pakistan (TTP), with a senior minister saying that talks were under way `in line with the Constitution` and the ceasefire could be extended keeping in view the progress made in the talks.
• This was stated by Minister for Information and Broadcasting Fawad Chaudhry, according to the state-run Pakistan Television, following the meeting of the Parliamentary Committee on National Security on Monday.
• It was not clear if his remarks were based on the briefing at the meeting.

2. Modern frigate delivered to PN in China

• Pakistan Navy`s first frigate of Type 054A/P, the PNS Tughril, has been commissioned at the Hudong Zhonghua Shipyard in China.
• Ambassador of Pakistan to China Moin-ul-Haq was the chief guest on the occasion.
• PNS Tughril is the first of 4 x Type 054 Frigates being constructed for Pakistan Navy.
• The ship is a technologically advanced and highly capable platform with enormous surface-to-surface, air and underwater firepower, besides extensive surveillance potentials

3. NA passes NAB ordinance and journalists protection bills

• The National Assembly on November 8, 2021 passed seven bills, including one related to three recent amendments to the National Accountability Ordinance (NAO-1999) that gave extension in service to the incumbent NAB chairman and its prosecutor general.
• Among these bills was one related to protection of journalists. The recently promulgated NAO (1st, 2nd and 3rd amendments) ordinances, which were also presented before the house in the shape of a bill, were passed amid rejection by the opposition.
• The other five bills related to protection against harassment of women at workplaces, National Commission on the Rights of Child, juvenile justice system and amendments to criminal laws.

4. Countries far apart as climate talks enter final week

• The UN climate talks entered their final week on November 8, 2021 with countries still worlds apart on key issues including how rapidly the world curbs carbon emissions and how to help nations already impacted by global heating.
• After a week of headline announcements from host Britain on ending deforestation and phasing out coal, experts say the underlying COP26 negotiations have barely progressed.
• Countries are in Glasgow to work out how to implement the Paris Agreement`s goals of limiting temperature rises to between 1.5 and 2 degrees Celsius.

5. UN sees sharp jump in number of people facing famine

• The UN`s food agency said on November 8, 2021 the number of people on the edge off amine in 43 countries had risen to 45 million, as acute hunger spikes around the world.
• The jump from 42 million people earlier in the year was largely down to a food security assessment that found another three million people facing f amine in Afghanistan, the World Food Programme (WFP) said.
• `Tens of millions of people are staring into an abyss. We`ve got conflict, climate change and Covid19 driving up the numbers of the acutely hungry, WFP Executive Director David Beasley was quoted as saying

6. Astronaut becomes first Chinese woman to walk in space

• Astronaut Wang Yaping became the first Chinese woman to walk in space, authorities said on November 8, 2021, as her team completed a six-hour stint outside the Tiangong space station as part of its ongoing construction.
• Tiangong-meaning `heavenly palace` is the latest achievement in China`s drive to become a major space power, after landing a rover on Mars and sending probes to the Moon. Its core module entered orbit earlier this year, with the station expected to be operadonalby2022

7. Ariana Airlines resumes flights between Afghanistan and Dubai

• Ariana Afghan Airlines on November 8, 2021 resumed regular flights from Kabul to Dubai, reopening a heavily used international route that had been suspended since the Taliban victory over the Western-backed government in August.
• Ariana will operate daily flights, charging $550 for a one-way ticket, the state-run airline said on its Facebook page.
• A spokesman said there had been heavy demand for tickets on the first flight, which was scheduled to depart at 4.30pm local time on Monday (1200 GMT). Dubai will be the only international destination offered by Ariana for the time being

• Things have changed quickly as the Pakistan team has performed at the Twenty20 World Cup, reaching the semi-finals with a perfect record in the Super 12 stage.
• The cancelled tours of New Zealand and England now seem a thing of the past.
• On November 8, 2021, Australia Pakistan`s opponents in the T20 World Cup semis confirmed that they will tour Pakistan next year for three Tests, three One-day Internationals and a Twenty20 International in March-April, marking it the first time since 1998 that they will play in the country

9. India thrash Namibia in Kohli`s last game as T20 captain

• India hammered Namibia by nine wickets to give Ravi Shastri a winning farewell in his last match as coach and finish their disappointing World Cup campaign on a high November 8, 2021.
• Out of semifinals contention, India made sure there was no slip-up with a complete performance: Limiting Namibia to 132-8 and overhauling that with 136-11n 15.1 overs.
• Spinners Ravindra Jadeja (3-16) and Ravichandran Ashwin (3-20) starred in the first half of the last Super 12 match, then rode on a 86-run opening stand between Rohit Sharma and K.L. Rahul who smashed half-centuries. Sharma made 56 and Rahul an unbeaten 54 off 36 balls

10. Iftikhar replaces Hafeez for BD Twenty20 games

• In-form Iftikhar Ahmed has been included in place of veteran all-rounder Mohammad Hafeez as the national selection committee on November 8, 2021 announced an 18-member Pakistan squad for the tour of Bangladesh where a three-match T20 International series will be staged on Nov 19, 20 and 22 in Dhaka.
• The 31-year-old Iftikhar who has played 13 T20 Internationals, so far is the only change made to the squad currently featuring in the ICC T20 World Cup in the UAE.
• According to the PCB, the 41-year-old Hafeez opted to skip the tour to provide an opportunity to any young gun so Iftikhar, who was declared as best player of the last national T20 tournament, was picked
