1. PA gives suo motu powers to standing committees` heads

• The Punjab Assembly unanimously passed on Monday an amendment to its Rules of Procedure, for the first time giving suo motu powers to its standing committees as the house witnessed one of fiercest protests by the opposition making the speaker put off the proceedings for the next day.
• The amended Rules of Procedure will allow chairpersons of the standing committees to take up any business relevant to the body, unlike in the past when the speaker would send it any business (to dis cuss and vet bills, motions, or any other matter).


2. Iranian foreign minister arrives today on two-day visit

• Iranian Foreign Minister Javad Zarif is arriving here on Tuesday (November 9, 2020) on a two day visit for talks on regional issues in addition to a review of bilateral ties.
• Mr Zarif is scheduled to meet Prime Minister Imran Khan, Foreign Minister Shah Mehmood Qureshi, National Assembly Speaker Asad Qaiser and Army Chief Gen Qamar Javed Bajwa during his stay in Islamabad.
• He is being accompanied by a delegation comprising political and economic experts.
• The delegation includes Iran`s special envoy for Afghanistan Mohammad Ibrahim Taheriyan, according to an Iranian official.


3. Reforms approved to usher in competitive power markets

• In a long outstanding major development, the National Electric Power Regulatory Authority (NEPRA) on Monday approved an 18-month roadmap to the electricity stock exchange Competitive Trading Bilateral Contract Market (CTBCM) to convert the existing captive (single buyer) electricity market into a liberal multi buyer environment.
• Conceptually, this would mean the power generators and purchasers will have freedom to sell and purchase electricity bilaterally on take and pay basis through a market operator (MO) and special purpose trader (SPT)Central Power Purchasing Agency unlike the existing arrangement where consumers are bound to purchase electricity from the distribution company of a specific area. As such, the electricity units will ultimately be traded like share trading at a stock exchange


4. Chairman NAPHDA inaugurates 1st Pre-Fabricated House in Pakistan

• Chairman Naya Pakistan Housing Development Authority (NAPHDA) Lt Gen (R ) Anwar Ali Hyder inaugurated the 1st Pre-Fabricated House in Pakistan here November 9, 2020.
• G-Songuo, in association with Naya Pakistan Housing Development Authority has completed the construction of state of the art modular model house in Islamabad.
• Speaking on the occasion, the Chairman said that provision of low-cost houses to the people of low and middle classes were government top priority. The government would provide all out facilities to the builders and other stakeholders to materialize the dream of Prime Minister for provision of accommodation to the poor and middle classes at affordable rate, he said.


5. President Alvi inaugurates soft launch of Financial Pakistan Expo 2020

• President Dr Arif Alvi November 9, 2020 emphasised that elimination of corruption, enhancing efficiency, governance and taking care of the poor are the core areas which must be addressed for the development and progress of the country.
• Addressing the soft launch ceremony of Financial Pakistan Expo 2020 here, the President said digital transaction not only ensures facilitation, but also helps in strengthening economy and its documentation.
• He said digital transaction will play a key role in widening tax base, increasing Special Economic Zones and encouraging entrepreneurship through small and medium enterprises.


6. UHS launches country’s first Centre for Happiness and Well-being

• The University of Health Sciences (UHS) has launched country’s first Centre for Happiness and Well-being which will initiate programs to define and measure parameters of happiness, monitor trends, investigate social, environmental and biological determinants of health and well-being, and, at the same time, provide services to healthcare workers, medical staff and students to fight stresses, burnouts and unhealthy lifestyles.
• The Centre has been envisioned by UHS Board of Governors’ Chairman and former Chief Justice of Pakistan, Justice (retired), Tassaduq Hussain Jillani, who inaugurated it at Jinnah Campus, Kala Shah Kaku.


7. Developers announce vaccine as virus cases rise across the world

• A vaccine jointly developed by Pfizer and BioNTech was 90 percent effective in preventing Covid-19 infections in ongoing Phase 3 trials, the companies announced November 9, 2020. The statement was released as coronavirus cases are soaring across the world, and European stock markets and oil prices jumped on the news.
• According to preliminary findings, protection in patients was achieved seven days after the second of two doses, and 28 days after the first.
• “The first set of results from our Phase 3 Covid-19 vaccine trial provides the initial evidence of our vaccine’s ability to prevent Covid-19,” Pfizer chairman and CEO Albert Bourla said in a statement


8. Russian military helicopter shot down in Armenia

• A Russian military helicopter was shot down in Armenia near the border with Azerbaijan on November 9, 2020, the defence ministry in Moscow said, killing two crew members.
• The ministry said that the Mi-24 helicopter was hit by a man-portable air defence system close to the border with Azerbaijan, whose forces are fighting Armenian-backed separatists in the disputed region of Nagorno-Karabakh.
• A third person was injured and evacuated, the ministry said in a statement


9. Trump fires defence secretary after policy clashes

• President Donald Trump said on November 9, 2020 that he had `terminated` Defence Secretary Mark Esper, appearing to use his final months in office after his election defeat to settle scores within his administration.
• Trump split with Esper over a range of issues and was particularly angered by his public opposition to Trump`s threats to use active duty military forces this summer to suppress street protests over racial injustice after police killed George Floyd in Minneapolis.
• Trump said on Twitter that Christopher Miller, director of the National Counterterrorism Center, was taking over as acting secretary of defence. The Senate would be highly unlikely to confirm a new nominee before Trump leaves office in January


10. BTS wins four prizes at virtual MTV Europe Music Awards

• K-pop superstars BTS were the big winners at recent virtual MTV Europe Music Awards, taking home a whopping four prizes. The South Korean boyband thanked their fans virtually as they dominated in the Best Song for Dynamite, Best Group, Best Virtual Live and Biggest Fans categories.
• Show hosts, Little Mix’s Jade Thirlwall, Perrie Edwards and Leigh-Anne Pinnock, were also triumphant as they picked up the Best Pop and Best UK and Ireland Act awards, while their bandmate Jesy Nelson missed out on the ceremony due an illness. Confetti hit-makers Leigh-Anne, 29, Jade and Perrie, both 27, appeared as holograms in front of a cheering crowd on hundreds of screens at the show
