1. Respect for rights will lead to Afghanistan`s stability: PM

• Prime Minister Imran Khan said on November 12, 2021 that continued security and resolute counter-terrorism actions, respect for rights of all Afghans and inclusivity in governance and politics would further contribute to Afghanistan`s stability.
• The prime minister, during a meeting with acting Foreign Minister of Afghanistan Amir Khan Muttagi, hoped that the interim Afghan government would continue to constructively engage the international community and keep on taking positive measures to address the prevailing challenges.
• Mr Muttaqi was accompanied by Afghanistan`s acting ministers for finance and industry and commerce and other senior members of his delegation


2. UNHCR gives emergency equipment to Polyclinic

• The United Nations High Commission for Refugees (UNHCR) handed over a consignment of emergency medical equipment to Polyclinic administration on November 12, 2021.
• The administration of the hospital shifted the equipment to neonatal intensive care unit (NICU) of the hospital. Financial support for the equipment was provided by the Chinese government.
• The equipment were transferred to the hospital as part of a list of equipment needed by the hospital, including infant incubators, baby warmers, suction machines, infusion pumps and ultrasound machines


3. WB to help Punjab improve access to affordable housing

• The World Bank has decided to help the Punjab government improve access to housing for low income groups and will support it to articulate a comprehensive strategy in this regard.
• The total cost of the `Punjab Affordable Housing Programme` has been estimated at $200 million and the World Bank will support the province to better align its strategy with the `Naya Pakistan Housing Programme` to better coordinate the two programmes and leverage federal resources that will be available for interventions in Punjab.
• The World Bank technical assistance will focus on policy reforms, strengthening of institutions, development for improving effectiveness and efficiency of housing supply


4. Pacific leaders agree on vaccines, but not on US hosting APEC

• Pacific Rim leaders agreed to do all they can to improve access to coronavirus vaccines and reduce carbon emissions, but failed to reach agreement on whether the US should host talks in two years` time.
• US President Joe Biden and Chinese President Xi Jinping were among those taking part in the online meeting of 21 leaders at the end of the annual Asia-Pacific Economic Cooperation forum on Saturday, which was being hosted virtually by New Zealand.
• The focus was on areas in which the unlikely mix of leaders could find common ground. But the failure of the group to endorse a US bid to host APEC in 2023 pointed to the deep divisions that lie just beneath the surface


5. 75pc of Afghan girls back in school: Muttaqi

• Acting Foreign Minister of Afghanistan Amir Khan Muttaqi on November 12, 2021 said that 75 per cent of girls in the country had resumed their studies in schools.
• He was replying to a question about the situation of girls` education rights in Afghanistan, at a talk organised by the Centre for Afghanistan, Middle East and Africa (CAMEA), here at the Institute of Strategic Studies, Islamabad (ISSI).
• The Taliban, after taking control of the country in August, had closed the schools with thousands of girl students confined to their homes, attracting criticism by the international community.


6. Qatar to act as US diplomatic representative in Afghanistan

• Secretary of State Antony Blinken said on November 12, 2021 that the Gulf nation of Qatar has agreed to represent American interests in Afghanistan following the closure of the US embassy in Kabul in late August.
• Blinken said Qatar will serve as the protecting power for the United States in Taliban-run Afghanistan, a move that suggests the Biden administration has little confidence that it will re-open the embassy in the near future.
• Qatar will establish a US interests section within its own embassy in Kabul to provide consular and other services to American citizens in Afghanistan, Blinken said. Qatar will also assume responsibility for the security and protection of now-vacant US diplomatic facilities in the Afghan capital


7. Countries far apart as COP26 enters final stretch

• A draft statement of the COP26 summit on Friday called on nations to ease their reliance on fossil fuels as talks entered their final hours without any sign of delivering the emissions cuts needed to limit global warming to 1.5C.
• After two weeks of round-the-clock negotiations, delegates produced a round-up of their progress, which urged governments to accelerate `the phase-out of unabated coal power and of inefficient subsidies for fossil fuels`.
• Delegates in Glasgow from nearly 200 nations are charged with keeping the Paris Agreement temperature goals alive even as climate-driven disasters hit countries the world over


8. US journalist jailed in Myanmar for 11 years

• A Myanmar junta court on Friday sentenced an American journalist to 11 years in prison on charges of unlawful association, incitement against the military and breaching visa rules, his employer and lawyer said.
• The military has squeezed the press since taking power in a February coup, arresting dozens of journalists critical of its crackdown on dissent, which has killed over 1,200 people according to a local monitoring group.
• Danny Fenster, who had been working for local outlet Frontier Myanmar for around a year, was arrested in May as he tried to leave the country to see his family

• The first mega sports event in the region, the South Punjab School Olympics of 2021, concluded with a colorful ceremony in Dera Ghazi Khan on November 12, 2021 .
• The event ‘SCHOOLYMPICS’ was organised by the School Education Department, South Punjab, in Dera Ghazi Khan and Adviser to Chief Minister on Health Hanif Pitafi, Minister of State for Climate Change Zartaj Gul and Secretary Education, South Punjab Dr Ehtasham Anwar were amongst the prominent guests, says a handout


10. Brazil become first South American team to qualify for 2022 World Cup

• Brazil are celebrating as the first South American team to qualify for the World Cup in Qatar with several matches in hand and more than a year before the tournament begins.
• Neymar set up Lucas Paqueta in the 72nd minute to give Brazil a 1-0 win against Colombia in Sao Paulo. Thursday`s victory was the Selecao`s 11th in 12 matches of qualifiers, putting them top the 10-team South American group with 34 points, nine clear of second-placed Argentina and 18 points ahead of Chile and Colombia in fourth and fif th.
• Chile and Colombia can add only 15 points from their five remaining games.
• The top four teams in South America earn direct entry to the World Cup.
