1. Govt upbeat about getting bills passed thru joint sitting today

• After assurances of support from its coalition partners with some behind-the-scenes management, the government appears confident of getting all its bills passed in the much-anticipated joint session of parliament on November 16, 2021 (today) despite having a mere two-vote majority.
• President Dr Arif Alvi on Tuesday formally convened the joint session of parliament at noon on Wednesday to take up more than two dozen crucial bills, including the electoral reforms bills, which have either lapsed or were rejected by the Senate

2. PA resolution for regularising illegal buildings passed amid protest

• Amid a strong protest by the opposition and ruckus, the Sindh Assembly on November 16, 2021 passed a resolution of the Pakistan People Party-led government with a majority vote seeking legislation to protect illegally constructed buildings across the province and `disciplinary` action against delinquent officials who allowed such constructions over the years.
• The opposition members belonging to Pakistan Tehreek-i-Insaf, Grand Democratic Alliance, Muttahida Qaumi Movement Pakistan and Muttahida Majlis-i-Amal rejected the treasury members` resolution saying that they could not support it as it was against the orders of the Supreme Court and aimed to protect `thieves and robbers`.
• They also gathered in front of the speaker`s rostrum, chanted antigovernment slogans and tore up copies of the resolution, which was later adopted with a majority vote.

3. Taliban invited to next meeting of Afghanistan`s neighbours

• Foreign Minister Shah Mahmood Qureshi said on November 16, 2021 the Afghan Taliban would be invited to the third ministerial meeting of Afghanistan`s neighbours.
• Mr Qureshi, at a meeting of the Senate Foreign Affairs Committee, said: `Afghanistan`s interim government will also be invited to the next meeting of Afghanistan`s neighbours.
• Pakistan had worked out a new mechanism for consultations among Afghanistan`s neighbours on the developments in the war-ravaged country after the Taliban takeover in mid-August. The format includes China, Iran, Pakistan, Tajikistan, Turkmenistan and Uzbekistan, besides Russia. The inaugural meeting was held in Islamabad on September 8, while the second meeting was hosted by Iran on October 27

4. China donates 30,000 food packages to GB

• The Chinese government has donated 30,000 food packages for distribution among the poor residents of Gilgit-Baltistan.
• The office-bearers of the Overseas Chinese Association, Gilgit-Baltistan, handed over food packages to the Chief Minister Khalid Khursheed at a ceremony held here on November 16, 2021.
• Speaking on the occasion, the chief minister thanked the Chinese government for the gesture. He said the Chinese government had proved to be the best friend of Pakistan through thick and thin

5. Russia destroys own satellite in missile test, draws flak

• The United States denounced Russia on Monday for conducting a `dangerous and irresponsible` missile strike that blew up one of its own satellites, creating a debris cloud that forced the International Space Station`s crew to take evasive action.
• Washington wasn`t informed in advance about the test, only the fourth ever to hit a spacecraft from the ground, and will talk to allies about how to respond, said officials.
• The move reignites concerns about the growing space arms race, encompassing everything from the development of satellites capable of shunting others out of orbit to laser weapons.

6. Police accused of turning civilians into human shield as raid kills four in Srinagar

• Four people died in Srinagar on November 16, 2021 night after a deadly raid by soldiers on a market.
• A police official said `rebels fired indiscriminately at police and soldiers` when they cordoned off a business centre in Srinagar following a tipoff.
• The ensuing clash led to the death of two civilians and two Kashmiri fighters. However, families of the slain civilians said Indian troops used them as human shields during the deadly standoff

7. India allows Sikhs to visit Kartarpur after one year

• India gave the green light for thousands of Sikh pilgrims to cross the border into Pakistan from November 16, 2021 ahead of the birth anniversary of the religion`s founder Guru Nanak.
• The Kartarpur Corridor, a visa-free crossing allowing Indian Sikhs to visit the temple in Pakistan where Guru Nanak died in 1539,first opened in 2019 for Nanak`s 550th birth anniversary but was closed last year because of the pandemic.
• India`s Home Minister Amit Shah announced that the corridor will reopen from Wednesday ahead of Nanak`s birth anniversary celebrations this Friday.

8. Biden, Xi trade warnings on Taiwan in lengthy virtual summit

• US President Joe Biden and China`s Xi Jinping traded strong warnings on the future of Taiwan at a virtual summit meant to establish `guardrails` against conflict between the rival superpowers.
• The video-link summit, which took place late on Monday in Washington and early on November 16, 2021 in Beijing, lasted a `longer than expected` three and a half hours, a senior US official told reporters.
• `The conversation was respectful and straightforward.
• While the goal was to settle an increasingly volatile relationship between the giant economic and geopolitical competitors, tension over Taiwan a self-governing democracy claimed by China loomed large

9. Israeli company linked to Middle East cyberattacks

• Technology sold by Israeli spyware company Candiru appears to have been used for a campaign of cyberattacks targeting high-profile Middle Eastern websites, an analysis by cyber-security firm Eset said on November 16, 2021.
• `We think it was a client of Candiru that carried out these attacks,` Eset investigator Matthieu Faou said.
• Eset did not name the client, but pointe d to an investigation by researchers at the University of Toronto that suggested in June that Saudi Arabia may have used similar techniques

10. Pakistan to host 2025 Champions Trophy, announces ICC

• Pakistan`s near three-decade wait to host an international cricket tournament is due to end in 2025.
• The International Cricket Council on November 16, 2021 announced Pakistan as hosts for the Champions Trophy in four years` time as it allocated global events from 2024 to 2031.
• The last time Pakistan was the venue for a multination tournament was back in 1996, when it cohosted the ODI World Cup with India and Sri Lanka
