1. PM assures Kabul of help to end bloodshed
• Prime Minister Imran Khan on November 19, 2020 assured the Afghan leadership of Pakistan`s full cooperation for reduction in violence in Afghanistan as he sought to fix bilateral ties that have for long been weighed down by mutual mistrust.
• Mr Khan both publicly extended this assurance and included it in the official communique on his day-long trip to Kabul that followed a series of confidence-building measures and a flurry of high-level exchanges aimed at creating a conducive environment for transforming the relationship into a cooperative one
2. Pakistan-Russia military exercise concludes
• The closing ceremony of Exercise DRUZBHA-V between Pakistan and Russian forces was held at the National Counter Terrorism Centre (NCTC) near Kharian.
• Russian Ambassador Danila Ganich, Inspector General Training and Evaluation (IGT&E) Lt-Gen Sher Afgun and senior military officials from both sides witnessed the closing ceremony
3. Buildings to turn blue as part of Children`s Day celebrations today
• More than 25 buildings across Pakistan will turn blue on November 20, 2020 night as the country celebrates World Children`s Day a global day of action for children and by children to help millions of them realise their rights under the Convention on the Rights of the Child.
• Among the monuments that will turn blue are landmarks such as the Prime Minister`s Secretariat, the Ministry of Human Rights and the National Assembly in Islamabad; Mazar-i-Quaid and Quaid-i-Azam Flag House in Karachi; Quaid-i-Azam Residency in Ziarat; Minar-iPakistan and Quaid-i-Azam Library in Lahore; all four provincial assemblies; and the Khyber Pass in Khyber Pakhtunkhwa
4. Two soldiers martyred in S. Waziristan
• Two soldiers were martyred and one was wounded when unidentified assailants attacked a security forces` convoy in South Waziristan tribal district on November 19, 2020.
• Inter-Services Public Relations, the army`s media wing, confirmed the manyrdom of personnel in the attack, which occurred in Pash Ziarat area of Makeen subdivision in South Waziristan
5. Tech giants threaten to leave country if social media rules stay
• A Day after the government notified rules that define how social media will be governed in Pakistan, technology companies announced that the regulations would make it difficult for them to continue their operations in the country.
• The rules titled, `Removal and Blocking of Unlawful Online Content (Procedure, Oversight and Safeguards) Rules 2020,` have been framed under the Prevention of Electronic Crimes Act 2016 (PECA).
6. Firebrand cleric Khadim Rizvi dies
• Khadim Hussain Rizvi, a firebrand right-wing preacher who shot to fearsome prominence on the national scene in the last five years, breathed his last on November 19, 2020 evening. He was 54.
• Though he was reported to have had temperature for the last few days, the immediate cause of his death is not known.
• Some blamed it on Covid-19 while others held heart failure responsible for the death. However, neither family nor his party officially shared the cause of his death.
7. Australian forces killed 39 Afghans, says inquiry
• Australian special forces allegedly killed 39 unarmed prisoners and civilians in Afghanistan, with senior commandos reportedly forcing junior soldiers to kill defenceless captives in order to `blood` them for combat, an investigation spread over four years found.
• Australia said on November 19, 2020 that 19 current and former soldiers would be referred for potential criminal prosecution for allegedly killing the 39 Afghan locals
8. US senators move to block sale of F-35 jets to UAE
• Three US senators on November 18, 2020 launched a bid to block the sale of top-of-the-line F-35 jets to the United Arab Emirates, voicing concern over the deal seen as a reward for the nation`s recognition of Israel.
• Even if the three can persuade a majority in Congress to oppose the $23 billion package, lawmakers would face an uphill climb to override a veto by outgoing President Donald Trump
• Senator Chris Murphy, a Democrat close to President-elect Joe Biden, said that the UAE violated terms of previous sales, pointing to reports that weapons sent to the US ally have been discovered in war-ravaged Libya and Yemen.
9. Britain plans biggest military spending since Cold War
• Britain announced its biggest military spending increase since the Cold War on November 19, 2020, pledging to end the `era of retreat` as it seeks a post-Brexit role in a world Prime Minister Boris Johnson warned was more perilous than for decades.
• Johnson said the extra spending reflected the need to upgrade military capabilities even as the Covid19 pandemic pummels the economy and strains public finances.
• He outlined plans for a new space command, an artificial intelligence agency and said the navy would be restored as Europe`s most powerful
10. Scottish writer Douglas Stuart wins Booker Prize
• Scottish writer Douglas Stuart won the Booker Prize for fiction on November 19, 2020 for Shuggie Bain, the story of a boy`s turbulent coming of age in hardscrabble 1980s Glasgow.
• Stuart, 44, won the prestigious 50,000 pound ($66,000) award for his first published novel, the product of a decade of work. He was the only UK-born author on a US-dominated list of six finalists for the prize, which is open to English-language novels from around the world.
