1. Strike ends as govt agrees to raise petrol dealers` margin

• After a daylong successful show of power, the Pakistan Petroleum Dealers Association (PPDA) on November 25, 2021 night called off its nationwide strike when the government agreed to increase their profit margin by 99 paisa per litre. A spokesman for the association Jahanzaib Malik confirmed to Dawn that the government and PPDA chairman Abdul Sami Khan had reached an agreement after holding day-long negotiations in Islamabad.
• Adviser to the Prime Minister on Finance Shaukat Tarin and Energy Secretary Arshad Mahmood held talks with the representatives of the PPDA as more than 80 per cent of the petrol pumps in all major cities, including the four provincial capitals, remained closed, causing great inconvenience to the general public.
• Mr Malik said they were charging Rs3.91 per litre earlier and now their commission would be Rs4.90 and it would be increased after the government`s announcement of new prices next month


2. Punjab finally relieves 10 officials under rotation policy

• The Punjab government finally `succumbed to the pressure` of the Establishment Division and relieved 10 officers of BS-20 belonging to the Pakistan Administrative Service (PAS) and Police Service of Pakistan of duties to report to other provinces on November 25, 2021.
• It was said to be the first transfer order [issued by the ED] under the Rotation Policy 2020 which followed 100 per cent compliance.
• In the past, the then governments of Pervez Musharaf and the PML-N in Punjab have been offering strong resistance to comply with the transfer orders of the establishment division.
• They had been picking up the officers of choice to retain their postings in the province, creating astrong resentment among other officials who had declared the implementation of the policy a result of `pick and choose` or `favouritism`


3. Opposition`s candidate elected CCB vice president

• A joint candidate of PML-N and Jamaat-i-Islami (JI) Chaudhry Changaiz Khan was elected unopposed as vice-president of Chaklala Cantonment Board (CCB) on November 25, 2021.
• He is the brother of PML-N senator Chaudhry Tanveer Khan.
• The board meeting held at CCB offices with Station Commander Brigadier Salman Nazar in the chair and attended by CCB officials 12 elected members.
• PML-N got five seats in Sept 12 cantonment board elections, Jamaat-i-Islami two, PTI secured two seats and one seat was clinched by an independent candidate.
• After election on two special seats, PML-N got one seat of labour and JI won a minority seat


4. Tariq to head PAF`s public relations wing

• The Pakistan Air Force on November 25, 2021 named Air Vice Marshal Tariq Zia as the head of its public relations wing the first time for a two-star general to hold this position.
• `Air Vice Marshal Tariq Zia has been appointed as director general public relations (Air Force),` the PAF announced.
• AVM Zia would also be PAF`s spokesman.
• The new appointment has been made as part of the reorganisation of the public relations directorate under which the position of the director had already been upgraded to that of a director general though it continued to be held by an air commodore for some time


5. Shaheen-1 A ballistic missile test-fired

• Pakistan on November 25, 2021 conducted the successful test flight of Shaheen-1A surface-to-surface ballistic missile.
• The test flight was aimed at re-validating certain design and technical parameters of the weapon system, said an Inter-Services Public Relations (ISPR) release.
• The test was witnessed by the Strategic Plans Division`s Director General Lt Gen Nadeem Zaki Manj, NESCOM chairman Dr Raza Samar, Commander of Army Strategic Forces Command Lt Gen Mohammad Ali and the scientists and engineers of strategic organisations.
• The director general Strategic Plans Division congratulated scientists and engineers on successful conduct of flight test


6. SBP reserves hit FY22`s lowest level

• The foreign exchange reserves of the State Bank of Pakistan (SBP), which have been declining fast since August, took the biggest drop of $691 million to $16.254 billion during the week ended on Nov 19.
• The central bank on Thursday reported what was the current fiscal year`s lowest level mainly due to external debt repayments.
• The country`s external account has been under dual pressure of debt repayments and rising current account deficit.
• However, analysts said the situation could improve in the coming weeks or months as the negotiations for release of $1bn tranche with the IMF had been concluded successfully.


7. India has more women than men for the first time

• India has more women than men for the first time on record, according to government data that also showed a slowing birthrate in the world`s second-most populous nation.
• Parents in India have historically favoured sons over daughters, who are of ten considered burdensome and costly due to the tradition of wedding dowries.
• Sex-selective abortions have been outlawed but the practice has persisted, and national population data has consistently recorded one of the world`s highest ratios of men to women.
• But the latest National Family and Health Survey, released by the health ministry on Wednesday, recorded 1,020 women per 1,000 men after two years of research.


8. UN launches effort to end violence against women by 2030

• UN Secretary General António Guterres urged governments on November 25, 2021 to redouble their efforts for ending violence against women by 2030 as the world began 16 days of activism to highlight the issue.
• `Violence against women is not inevitable,` the UN chief said in a message. `Change is possible, and now is the time to redouble our efforts so that together, we can eliminate violence against women and girls by 2030.For thirty years, the United Nations observes the International Day for the Elimination of Violence against Women and this year it also kickstarted 15 days of activism to highlight the issue across the globe.
• In Washington, US Secretary of State Antony Blinken described gender-based violence as the `shadow pandemic` and emphasised the need to combat it as an emergency.


9. Interpol elects UAE general accused of torture as president

• Interpol elected an Emirati general accused of torture as its new president on November 25, 2021, despite the concerns of human rights organisations who fear the agency will be at risk of exploitation by repressive regimes.
• The appointment follows generous funding by the United Arab Emirates for the Lyon, France-based body and accusations that Abu Dhabi has abused Interpol`s system of so-called `red notices` for wanted suspects to persecute political dissidents.
• Emirati General Ahmed Nasser Al Raisi was elected following three rounds of voting during which he received 68.9 per cent of votes cast by member countries, Interpol said in a statement.


10. Egypt unveils Pharaonic `Rams Road` at Karnak Temple

• Egypt unveiled on November 25, 2021 a road lined with hundreds of ram headed sphinx statues dating back more than 3,000 years, in a grandiose nighttime ceremony at Karnak Temple in archaeological lyrich Luxor.
• Dubbed the `Rams Road`, the sandstone-paved path connecting the temples of Karnak and Luxor in the centre of the southern Nile city was officially opened by President Abdel Fattah al-Sisi and a host of senior officials in a spectacular night-time ceremony.
• The road is nearly three kilometres (two miles) long and named `The Path of God` in ancient Egyptian mythology.
