1. New Covid strain prompts govt to place travel curbs

• Pakistan on November 27, 2021 placed seven countries in category `C` and imposed a ban on direct and indirect inbound travel from these regions with immediate effect following the emergence of `Omicron` a virulent strain of Covid-19 in South Africa and its subsequent transmission to several countries.
• Passengers from South Africa, Hong Kong, Mozambique, Namibia, Lesotho, Eswatini and Botswana will face the travel ban. `A complete ban has also been enforced on direct and indirect travel from these high-risk countries, a notification issued by the National Command and Operation Centre (NCOC) stated, explaining that the countries have been included in category `C` due to the surfacing of Omicron coronavirus variant in South Africa and its spread to adjoining regions.
• Omicron has been classified by the World Health Organisation (WHO) as `highly transmissible` variant the same category that includes the predominant Delta variant.

2. Two soldiers martyred in North Waziristan attack

• Two soldiers were martyred when terrorists attacked a military post in Datta Khel area of North Waziristan tribal district on November 27, 2021, said the Inter-Services Public Relations (ISPR) in a statement.
• It said that intense exchange of fire took place between the security forces and the attackers in which two soldiers were martyred. They have been identified as Naik Rehman, 27, resident of Chitral, and Lance Naik Arif, 22, resident of Tank.
• Meanwhile, unknown gunmen snatched weapons from two police constables in the Spinwam area of the district on Monday.
• Officials said that the constables were escorting a vaccination team in the area when the unidentified men held the policemen at gun point and snatched weapons from them. Theyescaped the area after the incident

3. PIA announces schedule of 35 weekly flights to Saudi Arabia

• After Saudi Arabia`s decision to allow direct flights from Pakistan starting from Dec 1, the Pakistan International Airlines has announced its night schedule to operate 35 flights weekly to the kingdom.
• The Saudi authorities on Thursday decided to withdraw a ban on flights from six countries Pakistan, India, Indonesia, Egypt, Brazil and Vietnam and passengers from these countries will no longer be required to undergo a14-day quarantine in a third country.
• A spokesman for PIA said that the administration has begun expanding air operation to the Kingdom of Saudi Arabia with operating 35 flights weekly from Pakistan`s different destinations.
• He said the flights will be operated to Saudi Arabia`s cities of Jeddah, Riyadh, Dammam and Al-Qasim.

4. Countries convene for pandemic treaty talks

• World nations gather on Monday to thrash out whether to pursue a pandemic treaty setting out how to handle the next crisis which experts fear is only a matter of time.
• The three-day meeting at the World Health Organisation (WHO) in Geneva comes with the planet still besieged by Covid-19, nearly two years on from the first recorded cases.
• The economic turmoil and millions of lives lost have triggered calls for new international defences strong enough to prevent a repeat disaster.

5. Profits outflow down 16pc in July-October

• The outflow of profits and dividends on foreign investment in Pakistan witnessed a decline of 16.5 per cent during the first four months of the current fiscal year (4MFY22).
• The State Bank of Pakistan (SBP) reported that outflow of profits fell to $566.6 million compared to $678.6m during the same period in FY21.
• The biggest outflow was from banks indicating that financial business in the country was in the best shape yielding highest profits. Almost all banks showed profits in their annual and quarterly reports. The profits outflow during July Oct FY22 was $125m against an outflow of $91m in the same period of FY21

6. Taliban won`t `interfere` in other countries` affairs: PM

• The Taliban co-founder and now prime minister of Afghanistan Mullah Mohammad Hassan Akhund pledged on November 27, 2021 that his government will `not interfere` in other countries` internal affairs, and urged international charities to continue offering aid to the war-ravaged country.
• Hassan`s audio speech broadcast on state television his first address to the nation since the Taliban seized power in August came ahead of next week`s meeting between the United States and the Taliban in Doha.
• `We assure all the countries that we will not interfere in their internal affairs and we want to have good economic relations with them,` said Hassan in a nearly 30-minute speech that came amid criticism on social media for remaining silent since the Islamists took power, even as the nation faced severe challenges

7. China conducts drills near Taiwan Strait

• The Chinese army has carried out a `naval and air force combat readiness patrol` near the Taiwan Strait following a contentious visit to the island by a group of American lawmakers, a spokesperson said.
• Tensions between Beijing and Washington have soared over the fate of democratic self-ruled Taiwan, which China has vowed to one day retake, by force if necessary.
• A group of American lawmakers arrived on the island Thursday offering support for the Taiwanese authorities, who Beijing accuses of seeking independence for the island.

8. UK scientist backs vaccines against Omicron

• The British scientist who led the research underpinning AstraZeneca`s coronavirus jab said on November 27, 2021 a new vaccine could be developed against the emerging Omicron variant `very rapidly` if needed.
• Professor Andrew Pollard, the director of the Oxford Vaccine Group, also said existing vaccines should work against the new strain, but that would only become apparent after more research in the coming weeks.
• `It`s extremely unlikely that a reboot of a pandemic in a vaccinated population like we saw last year (with the Delta variant) is going to happen,` he told BBC radio.
• But if required, `The processes of how one goes about developing a new vaccine are increasingly well-oiled, so if it`s needed that is something that could be moved very rapidly.

9. WTO cancels ministerial moot due to Covid variant

• Next week`s World Trade Organisation (WTO) ministerial conference, the global trade body`s biggest gathering in four years, was postponed at the last minute on Friday due to the new Omicron Covid-19 variant.
• The WTO hoped the four-day gathering in Geneva would breathe new life into the crippled organisation, which has been stuck for years trying to make progress on resolving issues like fishery subsidies.
• New director-general Ngozi OkonjoIweala was also hoping, against the odds, to make progress towards a deal on lifting Covid vaccine patents, proving the WTO had a relevant role to play in combating the pandemic.
• But the conference was postponed four days before it was due to start, hours after Omicron was declared a variant of concern by the World Health Organisation.

10. Women`s World Cup qualifying tournament in Zimbabwe cancelled due to virus concerns

• The women`s cricket World Cup qualifying tournament in Zimbabwe has been abandoned after the discovery of a new Covid-19 variant in South Africa that prompted travel curbs, the sport`s governing body (ICC) said on November 27, 2021.
• The detection of the new coronavirus variant called Omicron in South Africa forced a number of coun-tries to tighten border controls and impose curbs on travel from several southern African countries, including Zimbabwe.
• The ICC took the decision after Saturday`s game between the West Indies and Sri Lanka was called off when a member of the Sri Lankan support staff tested positive for COVID19
