1. President Alvi calls for steps to integrate ECO region

• President Dr Arif Alvi has said the Economic Cooperation Organisation`s (ECO) member states, despite having all elements for economic growth, are among the least integrated in terms of trade and investment, stressing the need for unlocking their potential for growth and development.
• While speaking at the 15th Summit of the Heads of State of the ECO on November 28, 2021, President Alvi said the intra-regional trade among ECO members was only eight per cent of their total trade though the region had all the elements needed for economic integration and rapid economic growth, including rich resources, enterprising people, geographical contiguity, and a common culture and heritage.
• Themed `Into the Future Together`, the summit was chaired by President of Turkmenistan Gurbanguly Berdimuhamedov and attended by heads of ECO member states and Secretary General Ambassador Khusrav Noziri

2. Dubai company to invest in Ravi riverfront project

• The Ravi Urban Development Authority (Ruda) has signed a Memorandum of Understanding with a Dubai based company for the establishment of echo system, innovation city and other environment-friendly schemes at Pakistan`s first high-tech city -Ravi Riverfront Urban Development Project (RRUDP).
• The company has agreed to invest $ 5oo million on various schemes under the MoU. However, a formal agreement will be signed at a later stage.
• `We have recently signed various MoUs worth $1.4 billion the first mega foreign investment pledged for the project. The MoUs include the $500 million the biggest among others under which the company would launch various schemes related to echo system, innovation city etc,` Ruda CEO told Dawn on Sunday

3. New Covid variant shuts borders across the globe

• A new, heavily mutated Covid-19 variant spread across the globe on Sunday, shutting borders, renewing curbs, and sparking fears for the fight against the nearly two-year-old coronavirus pandemic.
• Dubbed Omicron, the strain has cast doubt on global efforts to battle the pandemic because of fears that it is highly infectious, forcing countries to re-impose measures many had hoped were a thing of the past.
• Dutch health authorities said they had identified at least 13 cases of Omicron among 61 quarantined passengers who tested positive for coronavirus after arriving from South Africa.
• `The investigation has not yet been completed. The new variant may be found in more test samples,` the National Institute for Public Health warned

4. UAE to introduce new criminal code in January

• The United Arab Emirates has said a new criminal code would come into force in January as part of what it called the most sweeping legal reform in the Gulf state`s history.
• State news agency WAM reported on Saturday the government is changing 40 laws. It did not make clear, however, which of the changes that concern commercial companies, online security, trade, copyright, residency, narcotics and social issues were new and which had been previously reported. One change that appears new is the ratification of a Federal Crime and Punishment Law, effective from Jan 2, 2022, designed to better protect women, domestic staff and public safety.

5. EU, Nato vow action over migrant crisis, Russian build-up

• European Union and Nato leaders on November 28, 2021 vowed to counter `hybrid threats` during visits to Lithuania and Latvia dominated by the Belarus migrant crisis and Russia`s military build-up near Ukraine.
• Nato Secretary General Jens Stoltenberg also repeated his call on Russia to `de-escalate` its military build-up on the border with Ukraine and warned of `consequences` if it used force.
• The visit by Stoltenberg and European Commission chief Ursula von der Leyen came ahead of a meeting of Nato foreign ministers, including US Secretary of State Antony Blinken, in Latvia this week.

• The UAE has inaugurated its visa centre in the metropolis to facilitate Pakistanis. UAE`s Minister of Tolerance and Coexistence Sheikh Nahyan bin Mubarak Al Nahyan, Sindh Governor Imran Ismail, UAE Consul General in Karachi Dr Salem Al Khaddeim Al Dhanhani and others were also present

7. France seeks EU help over migrants, snubs UK

• France sought help from its European neighbours on November 28, 2021 to crack down on Channel people-smuggling gangs, with Interior Minister Gerald Darmanin saying he could `not accept` anymore deaths after a nun precedented accident claimed 27 lives.
• Ministers responsible for immigration from France, Germany, the Netherlands and Belgium convened in the northern French port of Calais on November 28, 2021 afternoon, but without Britain which was excluded after a row last week.
• `The biggest point for this meeting is the fight against people-smugglers who take advantage of our borders and countries,` Darmanin said at the start of the event, adding that `migratory pressures continue and are constantly increasing` `These deaths are too many,` he said of the accident which saw 27 people drown on Wednesday after their inflatable dinghy began losing aircrossing the English Channel in wintry temperatures. `We cannot accept that any more people die

8. Australian govt vows to unmask online trolls

• Australia`s government said on November 28, 2021 it will introduce legislation to unmask online trolls, and hold social media giants like Facebook and Twitter responsible for identifying them.
• Prime Minister Scott Morrison, whose conservative coalition government faces an election in the first half of 2022, said the law would protect Australians from online abuse and harassment.
• `The online world should not be a wild west where bots and bigots and trolls and others can just anonymously go around and harm people and hurt people, harass them and bully them and sledge them,` Morrison told reporters.
• `That is not what can happen in the real world, and there is no case for it to be able to be happening in the digital world.

9. Former Cambodian PM Ranariddh dies at 77

• Cambodian former prime minister Prince Norodom Ranariddh, the current king`s half-brother, who spent his later years in the political shadow of his one-time rival Prime Minister Hun Sen, has died in France. He was 77.
• The prince, whose royalist political party won elections in 1993, was ousted in a 1997 coup by coalition partner Hun Sen, who remains Cambodia`s authoritarian leader.
• Hun Sen said in a statement on Sunday that he and his wife were `heartbroken` at the news, calling Ranariddh `a dignitary, (a) member of the royal family who was patriotic to the nation, religion, the king`.
• Ranariddh was the most political member of Cambodia`s royal family in recent decades, leading his Funcinpec party in elections for years after he was ousted

10. Pakistan miss out on quarters after losing to Argentina

• Pakistan failed to reach the quarter-finals of the FIH Junior World Cup on Sunday after losing their last pool match to Argentina 4-3 at the Kalinga Stadium in the Indian city of Bhubaneswar.
• By winning this game, Argentina reached the quarter-finals of the mega event with two wins from three games in pool D.
• Argentina took lead in the 10th minute through a field from Bautist a Capurro. Pakistan captain Rana Abdul Waheed equalised in the 17th minute by scoring on a pass from team-mate Rizwan Ali on a penalty corner.
• In the 20th minute, Argentina`s Ignacio Nardolillo scored which again gave them lead. In the 28th minute, Pakistan earned a penalty stroke on which promising drag flicker Rizwan Ali scored to make it 2-2
