1. Biometric verification mandatory for registration, transfer of vehicles from Dec 15

• In order to ensure transparency during the transfer of ownership as well as new registrations, the Excise and Taxation Department will make the process of biometric verification mandatory for the registration and transfer of vehicle from December 15.
• An official of Excise and Taxation Rawalpindi told APP that according to the new system, it will be mandatory for the buyers and sellers to appear at the office of excise and taxation to get their vehicle transferred which would be implemented from December 15.


2. `Pakistan has the highest rate of breast cancer in Asia`

• Pakistan has the highest rate of breast cancer in Asia, as approximately 90,000 women are diagnosed with the disease every year out of whom 40,000 pass away.
• Estimates reveal that one in 10 Pakistani women could develop breast cancer in their lifetime.
• This was pointed out by speakers at a webinar, `Breast cancer awareness: give hope, save lives`, organised by Commission on Science and Technology for Sustainable Development in the South (Comsats)


3. Former NA speaker Sahibzada Farooq passes away

• Former National Assembly Speaker Sahibzada Farooq Ali Khan passed away on November 29, 2020 after a prolonged illness. He was 91.
• He has left behind a widow, a son and a daughter.
• Sahibzada Farooq was speaker of the Constituent Assembly which passed the 1973 Constitution of Pakistan. He remained the speaker of the National Assembly f rom Aug 9, 1973 to March 27, 1977.
• His funeral prayers were held at Shahi Eidgah and was attended by a large number of people from all walks of life


4. Decades of zoo joy end as Kaavan flies to Cambodia

• Kaavan, the lone elephant, embarked on a mammoth journey from Pakistan to Cambodia in the wee hours of November 30, 2020 morning on a specially chartered cargo plane from Russia.
• November 29, 2020 was a busy day for the global animal welfare organisation Four Paws. Their veterinarians went to work early in the morning and sedated Kaavan before shifting him into a special cage in which the elephant would be transported to a sanctuary in Cambodia.
• It was a day of many firsts.


5. 110 farmers killed in Nigeria by armed groups: UN

• A weekend attack on farm workers in northeast Nigeria blamed on the Boko Haram terrorist group left at least 110 dead, the UN humanitarian coordinator in the country said on November 29, 2020.
• `At least 110 civilians were ruthlessly killed and many others were wounded in this attack,` Edward Kallon said in a statement, after initial tolls indicated 43 and then at least 70 people died in Saturday`s massacre by suspected Boko Haram fighters


6. Prospects of two-State solution ‘more distant’ in Israeli-Palestinian conflict: UN chief says

• The United Nations (UN) remains committed to helping resolve the Israeli-Palestinian conflict, but the prospects of a two-state solution were becoming “more distant,” UN Secretary-General Antonio Guterres has said.
• Commemorating the International Day of Solidarity with the Palestinian People on November 29, 2020, he urged Israeli and Palestinian leaders to explore every opening to “restore hope” for a two-State solution.


7. Britain, France sign fresh deal to reduce migrant crossings

• Increased patrols and technology will be deployed along France’s beaches under a new agreement between Paris and London aimed at stopping illegal migration across the Channel.
• A growing number of migrants have tried to reach Britain across the perilous and busy shipping lane in recent months, with four deaths recorded in 2019 and seven so far this year. Just this weekend, French patrol boats rescued 64 migrants, including a pregnant woman and children apparently suffering from hypothermia, attempting to cross over to Britain.


8. UK bird flu outbreak leads to mass turkey cull

• More than 10,000 turkeys will be culled at a British farm after a bird flu outbreak was confirmed by the Department for Environment, Food and Rural Affairs (Defra).
• The flu was identified among 10,500 rearing turkeys at a farm in northern England, Defra said late Saturday, with all foul to be culled to prevent a spread. Public Health England (PHE) said the risk to public health from the virus was very low.


9. Human brain cells could be gene-edited: Study

• Cells in the human brain could one day be edited by scientists to prevent the development of Alzheimer’s disease, a new study suggests. The causes of Alzheimer’s are still not well understood, but a leading theory is that it is triggered by the build-up of a protein called beta-amyloid outside the brain cells.
• Researchers from Laval University in Canada have been investigating how a key gene in human nerve cells could reduce the formation of this protein. Many variants of this gene increases beta-amyloid production, but one variant, called A673T, instead reduces it. A673T was first discovered in 2012, and is only active in one in 150 people in Scandinavia, but those that have it are four times less likely to get Alzheimer’s

• David Prowse, the English actor who played Darth Vader in the original Star Wars films, has died aged 85, his management company said on November 29, 2020.
• The champion weightlifter-turned-actor starred as the body, but not the voice, of one of cinema’s best-known villains.
• Director George Lucas opted to dub another voice onto Prowse’s portrayal of the towering, masked antagonist Darth Vader in Star Wars,” The Empire strikes back and Return of the Jedi.
