1. SBP signs agreement for $3bn Saudi fund
• The State Bank of Pakistan on November 29, 2021 signed an agreement with the Saudi Fund for Development (SFD) to receive $3 billion, which will be placed in the SBP`s account with an aim to improve its foreign exchange reserves.
• The agreement was signed by SFD Chief Executive Officer Sultan Bin Abdul Rahman Al-Marshad and SBP Governor Dr Reza Baqir at the State Bank in Karachi, according to a statement issued by the SBP.
• In the last week of October, Saudi Arabia had agreed to revive its financial support to Pakistan, including about $3 billion in safe deposits and $1.2bn worth of oil supplies on deferred payments
2. Pakistan offers to host OIC meeting on Afghan issue
• Pakistan on November 29, 2021 offered to host next month a meeting of the Organisation of Islamic Cooperation (OIC) foreign ministers on Afghanistan that had been requisitioned by Saudi Arabia.
• `We have also offered to host the meeting, in Islamabad, on 17 December 2021.
• We are confident that OIC member states will endorse this offer,` said Foreign Minister Shah Mahmood Qureshi.
• Saudi Arabia has convened the meeting for discussing the aggravating humanitarian crisis in Afghanistan
3. Govt decides to open more border trade points with Iran
• A high-level meeting presided over by Balochistan Chief Minister Mir Abdul Qudoos Bizenjo has decided to open more border crossing points between Pakistan and Iran so that trade between the two countries does not come to a halt as it is the only source of income for the people of Makran.
• The meeting held in Turbat on November 29, 2021 gave a final shape to the modus operandi for trading oil and edibles with Iran, being the only source of income for the local people of border areas. The officials concerned briefed the meeting participants about the traditional and proposed model of border trade.
• The meeting decided to abolish the condition of possession of a token for locals to cross into Iran and bring oil back with them. Instead, it was decided the local administration would register a driver and his helper on the basis of their national identity cards and steps would be taken for making the registration process easy.
4. Bangash, Gandapur among three KP ministers assigned portfolios
• Khyber Pakhtunkhwa Chief Minister Mahmood Khan on November 29, 2021 assigned portfolios to three ministers and appointed his two special assistants. He also changed the portfolio of one of his special assistants.
• According to a notification issued here, the chief minister, exercising powers conferred upon him by Sub-Rule 4 of Rule 3 of the KP Government Rules of Business, 1985, assigned the portfolio of higher education, archives and libraries to minister Kamran Khan Bangash.
• Also, Mr Arshad Ayub Khan was notified as the irrigation minister. Mr Bangash and Mr Ayub were made ministers at the start of the current month. However, their portfolios were not announced
5. No gas for CNG stations in Sindh, Balochistan from Dec 1: SSGC
• The Sui Southern Gas Company Ltd (SSGCL) has decided to suspend gas supply to all the compressed natural gas (CNG) stations across Sindh and Balochistan from Dec 1 (8am) to Feb 15, 2022 (10pm).
• The government has approved a load management plan to make gas available to domestic and commercial customers on top priority basis during winter season.
• The SSGCL, in a statement, said gas supply to all captive power plants (CPPS) of non-export industrial units was discontinued last Friday till further orders due to this winter spike.
• However, all general industries, zero rated export industries including its CPPs and fertiliser sector will continue to get the gas
6. Controversial Indian farm reforms law repealed
• Indian lawmakers on November 29, 2021 repealed agricultural legislation that provoked a year of nationwide protests from farmers, in a move that was seen as a major reversal and rare climb down for Prime Minister Narendra Modi`s government, which had ardently defended the controversial reforms.
• The Farm Laws Repeal bill passed the lower and upper houses of parliament with scant debate ten days after Modi announced the surprise decision to withdraw the three laws in a televised national address.
• Protesting farmers have hunkered down in makeshift camps outside the capital of New Delhi since November of last year to demand the removal of the laws, which they fear would drastically shrink their incomes
7. Andersson elected Sweden`s PM for second time
• Sweden`s parliament on November 29, 2021 elected Magdalena Andersson as the country`s prime minister the first woman to hold the post five days after her initial bid lasted only hours.
• Despite being a nation that has long championed gender equality, Sweden has never before had a woman as prime minister.
• Last week Andersson was elected by parliament but she had to resign just hours later before she even had a chance to formally take office after her budget failed to pass through parliament and the Green Party quit her coalition government.
• The parliamentary turbulence was unprecedented inpolitically stable Sweden, where the Social Democrats have dominated for almost a century.
8. Russia carries out another test of hypersonic missile
• Russia said on November 29, 2021 it had carried out another successful test of its Zircon hypersonic cruise missile, as world powers race to develop the advanced weaponry.
• Russia, the United States, France and China have all been experimenting with so-called hypersonic glide vehicles defined as reaching speeds of at least Mach 5.
• As part of `the completion of tests` of Russia`s hypersonic missile weapons, the Admiral Gorshkov warship launched a Zircon missile at a target in the Barents Sea at a range of 400 kilometres (about 250 miles), the defence ministry said.
• `The target was hit,` the ministry said, describing the test as successful.
9. Fiji sends troops to Solomon Islands as hunger fears grow
• Fiji joined an international peacekeeping force keeping a lid on simmering tensions in the riot-hit Solomon Islands on November 29, 2021, as the Red Cross warned of food shortages in the Pacific nation`s devastated capital.
• Prime Minister Frank Bainimarama deployed an initial 50 Fijian troops to maintain law and order in the wake of deadly anti-government protests, lifting the number of peacekeepers to about 200 mostly Australian with a contribution of at least 34 from Papua New Guinea.
• Bainimarama said another 120 troops were on standby if the security situation deteriorated in Honiara, where a massive clean-up was under way after the unrest that claimed at least three lives
10. Jack Dorsey steps down as Twitter CEO
• Twitter co-founder Jack Dorsey resigned on November 29, 2021 as the social media network`s CEO, after surviving an activist investor`s bid to oust him in 2020 and steering the firm during the tumult of Donald Trump`s presidency.
• Dorsey who also is chief executive of payments company Square confronted during his tenure thorny freedom of speech issues, ways to make the platform profitable and pressure he had spread himself too thin.
• With his recognisable look shaved head and long beard, and his atypical style Dorsey for years has embodied Twitter alone.
