1. CM Punjab inaugurates Rs30b Rozgar Scheme

• Punjab Chief Minister Sardar Usman Buzdar October 1, 2020 inaugurated the Rs30 billion worth Punjab Rozgar Scheme at a ceremony held at the Chief Minister’s Secretariat. “Over 1.6 million needy persons will get employment through this scheme”, the CM said while addressing the ceremony.
• The Chief Minister maintained that the PTI-led government had started taking practical steps to fulfill the promise of employment provision and added that this scheme will make the youth self-reliant and job-providers. “Youth will be provided loans on a priority basis and owners of small and medium enterprises, as well as those economically suffering from corona, would be able to resume economic activities”, he explained


2. PEMRA bars broadcast of absconders` speeches

• The Pakistan Electronic Media Regulatory Authority (PEMRA) on October 1, 2020 issued a prohibition order to all satellite news channels barring the broadcast and repeat broadcast of speeches, interviews and public addresses by proclaimed offenders and absconders on national television.
• PEMRA also barred the broadcast of any sort of debate on the possible outcomes of sub-judice matters Although the order came after speeches by former prime minister Nawaz Sharif were aired on national television, PEMRA referred to a complaint by an individual, Mohammad Azhar Siddique, against the airing of speeches by a proclaimed of fender


3. Rs573bn roads, hydropower plants approved for Punjab, Khyber Pakhtunkhwa

• The Executive Committee of the National Economic Council (ECNEC) on October 1, 2020 approved seven major road projects worth Rs162.607 billion along with three power projects of Rs410.66bn for Punjab and Khyber Pakhtunkhwa.
• The Ecnec meeting presided over by Adviser to the Prime Minister on Finance and Revenue Dr Hafeez Shaikh also approved in principle the Locust Emergency and Food Security Project. The World Bank will provide $200 million for the locust project


4. PN Change of Command ceremony to be held on 7th

• The Change of Command ceremony of Pakistan Navy will be held at the PNS ZAFAR, Islamabad, on October 7.
• A day earlier, the President of Pakistan had appointed Vice Admiral Muhammad Amjad Khan Niazi as next Chief of the Naval Staff by promoting him to the rank of Admiral. His promotion will be effective from the date of assuming command of Pakistan Navy. Vice Admiral Muhammad Amjad Khan Niazi will succeed Admiral Zafar Mahmood Abbasi who will relinquish the command of Pakistan Navy on October 7


5. Ex-Karachi corps commander found dead in his car

• Retired Gen Muzaffar Usmani, a former vice chief of army staff and corps commander of Karachi, was found dead in his car near Do Darya in Defence phase-VIII in the early hours of October 1, 2020 morning.
• Police said that the body of the retired general was found lying on the driving seat of his car, parked off the main road near the Do Darya traffic signal


6. Lebanon, Israel to hold US-brokered border talks

• Lebanon and Israel said on October 1, 2020 they would hold US-brokered negotiations on their disputed land and maritime borders, in what Washington hailed as a `historic` agreement between two sides technically still at war.
• The United States will act as a facilitator during the UN-backed talks to be held in the southern Lebanon border town of Nagoura, Lebanon`s Parliament Speaker Nabih Berri told a news conference in Beirut, without giving a date.
• US envoy David Schenker said the negotiations would start in the week of Oct 12.


7. Trump biggest driver of virus misinformation: study

• US President Donald Trump has been the world`s biggest driver of Covid-19 misinformation during the pandemic, a study from Cornell University said on October 1, 2020.
• A team from the Cornell Alliance for Science evaluated 38 million articles published by English-language, traditional media worldwide between Jan 1 and May 26 this year


8. Astronomers spot pair of massive baby stars growing

• Using the Atacama Large Millimeter/submillimeter Array (ALMA), astronomers spotted a pair of massive baby stars growing in salty cosmic soup.
• Each star is shrouded by a gaseous disk which includes molecules of sodium chloride, commonly known as table salt, and heated water vapor. Analyzing the radio emissions from the salt and water, the team found that the disks are counter rotating. This is the second detection of salt around massive young stars, promising that salt is an excellent marker to explore the immediate surroundings of giant baby stars


9. David Hemp appointed Pakistan women’s head coach

• Australia-based David Hemp has been appointed as head coach of the Pakistan women’s national cricket team following a robust and transparent recruitment process.
• Hemp, who turns 50 next week, has previously coached the Melbourne Stars’ and Victorian women’s cricket teams in Australia’s Women’s Big Bash League between 2015 and 2020, and is also a former Bermuda and Glamorgan captain.
• Hemp played 271 first-class matches and scored over 15,000 runs for Glamorgan, Free State and Warwickshire. He also represented Bermuda in 22 one-day internationals from 2006 to 2009, scoring 641 runs with a century and four half-centuries.


10. Bayern lift Super Cup

• Bayern Munich wasted a two-goal lead and needed a lucky 82ndminute winner from Joshua Kimmich to beat Borussia Dortmund 3-2 in Germany`s Super Cup on Wednesday and secure their fifth title of the year.
• Midfielder Kimmich snatched the ball in midfield, played a one-two with Robert Lewandowski and had his shot blocked before the ball bounced back off his foot and into the net.
• `It was not that easy especially in the second half. We led 2-0 but then made our own life difficult,` said Bayern coach Hansi Flick, who took over in November and has enjoyed a sensational 10 months in charge
