1. Amnesty offer only for `good` Taliban: minister

• Defending the government move to offer amnesty to the banned Tehreek-i-Taliban Pakistan (TTP), federal Interior Minister Sheikh Rashid Ahmed on October 2, 2021 said the offer was only for `good Taliban` and talks in this connection were taking place at the `highest level.
• Without explaining the `highest level,` the minister, who was talking to reporters at Quaid-i-Azam International Airport after arriving here on a two-day visit, made it clear that the offer was not for those militants who were responsible for bloodshed in the country, citing the December 2014 massacre in Peshawar`s Army Public School


2. Five security personnel martyred in terrorist attack

• Four Frontier Corps soldiers and a sub-inspector of Levies Force were martyred when terrorists targeted their vehicle in the Spin wam area of North Waziristan tribal district on October 2, 2021.
• According to the Inter Services Public Relations, the military`s media affairs wing, clearance operation is in progress to eliminate any terrorist found in the area.
• The ISPR identified the martyred personnel as Havaldar Zahid, 35, who belonged to Charsadda; Havaldar Ishaq, 37, a resident of Kurram; Lance Naik Wali, 28, who belonged to Khyber; Lance Naik Abdul Majeed, 28, who was a resident of Kurram; and Sub Inspector Javed, a 38-yearold resident of Spinwam.


3. Nadra certificates to be accepted in UK

• The United Kingdom`s Covid-19 rules will change on Monday, removing the `Amber List` designation completely and allowing anyone vaccinated anywhere by one of the four vaccines approved by London to travel to the UK without quarantine or self-isolation.
• Furthermore, Pakistan`s vaccine certificates will be accepted by the UK, though Chinese vaccines will still not be.
• This was confirmed by the UK High Commissioner to Pakistan, Dr Christian Turner, to Dawn


4. Pakistan`s exports to Afghanistan fall sharply since Taliban takeover

• The flow of Afghan transit trade and Pakistan`s exports to Afghanistan saw a deeper drop since the Taliban took control of Kabul in August.
• The flow of cargo fell by 16 per cent in August 2021 and a further decline of 73pc in September from last year, which many experts attributed to the uncertainty in the wake of the takeover of Afghanistan.
• Official data available with Dawn shows that the flow of cargoes dipped 73pc to 4,212 containers in September 2021 from 15,846 containers in the same month last year. In August 2021 the container`s flow fell to 7,864 containers from 9,312 containers last year, indicating a decline of 16pc


5. Global Covid-19 deaths hit 5m as Delta variant sweeps the world

• Worldwide deaths related to Covid-19 surpassed 5 million, according to a tally, with unvaccinated people particularly exposed to the virulent Delta strain.
• The variant has exposed the wide disparities in vaccination rates between rich and poor nations, and the upshot of vaccine hesitancy in some western nations.
• More than half of all global deaths reported on a seven-day average were in the United States, Russia, Brazil, Mexico and India


6. Qataris vote in first legislative election

• Qatar wrapped up its first legislative election on October 2, 2021 with reports of a solid turnout even though the vote is not expected to shift power away from the emir.
• The vote is for 30 members of the 45-strong Shura Council, a body with limited powers that was previously appointed by the emir as an advisory chamber.
• The count got underway straight after the 1500 GMT close of polls. Results are expected before 2000 GMT


7. Children dying of malnutrition in Afghanistan: officials

• Children are dying of starvation in Afghanistan, local and international sources said on October 2, 2021, following warnings that a million youngsters there could face life-threatening malnutrition by the end of the year.
• In Ghor, one of the affected provinces, at least 17 children among those who made it to hospital have died from malnutrition in the last six months, the province`s public health director Mullah Mohammad Ahmadi said. Almost 300 have been treated for the effects of hunger.
• Hundreds of children are at risk of starvation in central parts of the country, he said


8. European-Japanese space mission gets first glimpse of Mercury

• A joint European-Japanese spacecraft got its first glimpse of Mercury as it swung by the solar system`s innermost planet while on a mission to deliver two probes into orbit in 2025.
• The Bepi Colombo mission made the first of six flybys of Mercury at 11:34pm on October 1, 2021, using the planet`s gravity to slow the spacecraft down.
• After swooping past Mercury at altitudes of under 200 kilometres, the spacecraft took a low resolution black-and-white photo with one of its monitoring cameras before zipping off again


9. Comedy king Umer Sharif passes away in Germany

• Legendary comedian Umer Sharif passed away in Nuremberg, Germany, on October 2, 2021 where he had reached for a brief stopover to be later taken to the US for medical treatment by an air ambulance. He was 66.
• He leaves behind two wives and two sons. He was suffering from multiple ailments because of which prior to flying out to Germany he had been hospitalised in Karachi for a few weeks


10. KP brush aside Balochistan in lopsided National T20 Cup tie

• It was a virtual stroll in the park for Khyber Pakhtunkhwa in Rawalpindi on October 2, 2021.
• The reigning National T20 Cup champions cantered to a 55-run success against a Balochistan side missing their injured captain Imam-ul Haq after the Pakistan batter had badly hurt himself in the field during Friday`s fixture against Southern Punjab.
• With the 18-match first leg schedule at the Pindi Cricket Stadium all set to end on Sunday, it was imperative on the part of Khyber Pakhtunkhwa to maintain their dominance as they surged to second spot in the six-team standings with this fourth triumph in five outings
