1. Online registration of candidates for CSS exams to begin today (October 5, 2020)

• The Federal Public Service Commission (FPSC) will start online registration of candidates intending to sit in Central Superior Services (CSS) examinations, 2021 from today (October 5). According to official sources, the last date for the submission of applications on FPSC web portal is November 3.
• Applicants are required to submit hard copy of the application form along with required documents to FPSC headquarters well before November 13, 2020. Late submitted and incomplete documents will be rejected.


2. Pakistan earns $161m from IT services’ export

• Pakistan earned $161.980 m by providing different information technology (IT) services in various countries during the first month of ongoing financial year 2020-21.
• This shows growth of 40.90 per cent when compared to $114.960 m earned through provision of services during the corresponding period of last fiscal year 2019-20, Pakistan Bureau of Statistics (PBS) reported.
• During the month under review, the computer services grew by 35.11 per cent as it surged from $90.070 m last year to $121.690 m during July 2020.


3. President to visit Kuwait today to condole Al-Sabah’s death

• President Dr Arif Alvi will undertake a visit to Kuwait October 4, 2020 to offer condolences over the sad demise of Amir Sheikh Sabah Al-Ahmed Al-Jaber Al-Sabah.
• In a statement, the foreign ministry said the President will meet new Amir of Kuwait Sheikh Nawaf Al-Ahmad Al-Jaber Al-Sabah and convey the profound sympathies and condolences of the leadership, government and people of Pakistan.


4. Most Pakistanis fear country headed in wrong direction: survey

• Majority of Pakistanis continue to fear that the country is heading in the wrong direction since last year, claims a survey.
• France-based organisation lpsos, in its survey titled `Consumer Confidence Survey in Pakistan`, released on October 4, 2020 claimed that four in five Pakistanis continued to fear that the country was heading in the wrong direction since last year.
• It also revealed that three in four Pakistanis expressed dissatisfaction with the way things are going in Pakistan today, while the same proportion of Pakistanis described as bad the current economic situation in the country


5. Thousands enter Grand Mosque as Makkah reopens for pilgrimage

• Mask-clad Muslims circled Islam’s holiest site along socially distanced paths on October 4, 2020, as Saudi authorities partially resumed the year-round Umrah pilgrimage with extensive health precautions adopted after a seven-month coronavirus hiatus.
• Thousands of worshippers entered the Grand Mosque in the holy city of Makkah in batches to perform the ritual of circling the sacred Kaaba, a cubic structure towards which Muslims around the world pray.


6. Lawyer named as first Black woman to lead national party in Canada

• Toronto lawyer Annamie Paul was Saturday named head of the Green Party, becoming the first Black woman to lead a national political party in Canada.
• The 47-year-old mother of two, the daughter of immigrants from the Caribbean, described herself as a “descendant of slaves.”
• Paul hailed her victory as a “historic moment” during her speech after the announcement of the results of the internal ballot in Ottawa.


7. Cities under fire as Armenia-Azerbaijan fighting intensifies

• Azerbaijan-Armenian and Azerbaijani forces exchanged rocket fire as fighting intensified over Nagorno-Karabakh on Sunday, with the breakaway region’s capital and Azerbaijan’s second-largest city bombarded.
• Armenia said that Nagorno-Karabakh’s main city Stepanakert, which has been under artillery fire since Friday, was hit again on Sunday and AFP journalists said there were regular explosions and clouds of black smoke rising in parts of the city.


8. New Caledonians reject independence from France

• The South Pacific territory of New Caledonia chose to remain French on October 4, 2020, narrowly rejecting independence in a tightly-fought referendum marked by a high turnout.
• The vote rejecting a breakaway from France after almost 170 years came in at 53.26 percent, down from 56.7 percent in a referendum two years ago.
• French President Emmanuel Macron who had said previously that `France would be less beautiful without New Caledonia` on Sunday said he was grateful to the archipelago`s voters


9. Pro-president parties win parliament vote in Kyrgyzstan

• Parties close to Kyrgyzstan`s pro-Russian President Sooronbai Jeenbekov dominated a parliamentary election on Sunday, though the results were disputed by several opposition parties after widespread claims of vote-buying.
• The 61-year-old head of state`s predecessor ended upinjail, soJeenbekov will be happy to have secured a friendly parliament as he plans for life after his single permitted term ends in 2023.
• Four parties crossed the threshold to get representation in parliament, three of which are expected to be loyal to the president, according to official results based on a count of 96 percent of the votes


10. Fashion designer Kenzo Takada dies from Covid-19

• Kenzo Takada, the iconic Franco-Japanese fashion designer famed for his jungle-infused designs and free-spirited aesthetic that channeled global travel, has died. He was 81.
• The family said in a statement to French media on October 4, 2020 that Takada died from complications from Covid-19 in a hospital in Neuilly-sur-Seine, near Paris. A public relations officer for Kenzo’s brand confirmed that Takada died, but didn’t give a cause of death.
