1. Soldier martyred in N. Waziristan terrorist attack
• A soldier was martyred in a terrorist attack on a check-post of security forces in the Ghariuom area of North Waziristan district.
• It was the second attack on security forces since the announcement of a 20-day truce by a militant outfit.
• An ISPR statement said the attack happened in the Ghaiuom area of North Waziristan. It said the military responded to the attack promptly and a soldier was martyred in the exchange of fire
2. PIA resumes flight operations to Kuwait
• Pakistan`s national carrier has resumed flight operations to Kuwait with two weekly flights.
• Due to ban on flights from Pakistan imposed by Kuwaiti authorities, Pakistan International Airlines (PIA) was unable to fly to Kuwait.
• According to sources, the director general of Civil Aviation Air Transport Kuwait informed Pakistani authorities that the safety department at the directorate general of Civil Aviation of the state of Kuwait checked all documents and approved PIA to re-operate flights from and to Kuwait International Airport
3. Summit Bank to sell 51pc shares to UAE investor
• The board of directors of Summit Bank has agreed to sell at least 51 per cent controlling interest to a UAE-based investor at Rs2.51 per share, a regulatory filing said on October 4, 2021.
• The smallest listed bank in terms of total assets will let Nasser Abdulla Hussain Lootah, who currently owns 0.51pc shares in the bank, subscribe to new ordinary shares by way of fresh equity injection.
• Post-subscription, the acquirer will purchase existing shares from minority shareholders through a public tender offer to bring its shareholding to at least 51pc and gain management control.
4. Doha deal enabled Taliban to take Kabul, says former Afghan envoy
• The deal the Trump administration signed with the Taliban also known as the Doha agreement legitimised the insurgent group, enabling them to capture Kabul, says Afghanistan`s former US ambassador.
• In an interview with `Axios on HBO,` Ambassador Adela Raz also said that Afghans would not trust a US president anytime soon because of the way they had been treated.
• Explaining why she believed the Doha agreement, which was signed in February 2020, paved the way for the Taliban takeover, she said: `When they get the political legitimacy from the international community, they almost felt okay there is no need to do more negotiation` and launched the offensive that ultimately led to Kabul`s collapse
5. Indian town on edge after nine die during farm protest
• Indian authorities suspended internet services and barred political leaders from entering a northern town on October 4, 2021 to calm tensions after nine people were killed in a deadly escalation of a yearlong demonstration against contentious agriculture laws.
• Four farmers died on Sunday when a car owned by Junior Home Minister Ajay Mishra ran over protesting farmers in the Uttar Pradesh town of Lakhimpur Kheri, officials and farm leaders said
6. World leaders scramble to limit Pandora Papers damage
• World leaders were on the defensive on October 4, 2021 after the release of millions of documents detailing how heads of state use offshore tax havens to stash assets worth hundreds of millions of dollars.
• Thirty five current and former leaders are featured in roughly 11.9 million documents leaked from financial services companies that include reports of luxury mansions on the French Riviera, Monte Carlo and California
7. UN investigation finds war crimes committed in Libya
• War crimes and crimes against humanity, including the use of child soldiers, have been committed in Libya since 2016, a United Nations investigation revealed on October 4, 2021.
• The Independent Fact-Finding Mission on Libya, established by the UN Human Rights Council, said Europe-bound migrants face abuse in detention centres and at the hands of traffickers, while detainees languishing in horrific conditions are tortured.
8. US pair share Nobel for unlocking mystery of sensing temperature, touch
• US scientists David Julius and Ardem Patapoutian on October 4, 2021 won the Nobel Medicine Prize for discoveries on receptors for temperature and touch.
• The duo`s research, conducted independently of each other in the late 1990s and 2000s, is being used to develop treatments for a wide range of diseases and conditions, including chronic pain.
• Julius, who in 2019 won the $3-million Breakthrough Prize in life sciences, said he was stunned to receive the call from the Nobel committee early on Monday.
9. Russians to shoot scenes for film during space mission
• Russian film director Klim Shipenko said on October 4, 2021 the first movie in orbit would be an `experiment,` on the eve of his journey into space hoping to beat a rival Hollywood project.
• The 38-year-old director and one of Russia`s most famous actresses, Yulia Peresild, 37, are due to blast off from the Baikonur Cosmodrome, Kazakhstan, on Tuesday to shoot scenes for upcoming Russian movie `The Challenge`.
• Russia`s space agency Roscosmos is sending them into orbit with experienced cosmonaut Anton Shkaplerov, 49. Cosmonauts on board the International Space Station are expected to appear in cameo roles in the film.
10. Artist who drew sacrilegious sketch dies in Sweden car crash
• Swedish artist Lars Vilks, who had lived under police protection since making a derogatory sketch in 2007, died in a car crash along with two bodyguards on October 3, 2021. He was 75.
• Vilks and two plainclothes police officers were killed in a head-on crash with a truck on Sunday afternoon, said the police chief for southern Sweden. All three died on the spot. The 45-year-old truck driver was flown to a hospital with serious injuries.
• The police car, which was being driven by one of the bodyguards, had left Stockholm and was heading south when it veered into the path of the truck. Both vehicles then burst into flames. The accident occurred near Markaryd, 100 kilometres north-east of Malmo, Sweden`s third largest city.
