1. ECP wants first phase of LG polls in KP next month

• The Election Commission of Pakistan (ECP) will meet on Oct 14 to take a decision to ensure holding of first phase of local government polls in Khyber Pakhtunkhwa next month.
• This was resolved at a meeting of the ECP held here with Chief Election Commissioner Sikandar Sultan Raja in the chair. Members of the incomplete commission, its secretary, four provincial election commissioners and senior officials attended the meeting.
• The ECP was told during a briefing that in the last meeting on Sept 21, representatives of the KP government had said the government wanted LG polls in the province to be held in a phased manner. The advocate general for KP had said that the provincial government wanted LG polls to be held in March 2022, citing security environment as a major reason


2. Chaman border closed

• In an unannounced move, the Taliban regime on October 5, 2021 closed the Pak-Afghan border at Chaman, suspending Afghan transit and regular trade between the two countries.
• Pakistani border officials confirming the closure of the border said: `Afghan side had not started daily activities at the other side of the Friendship gate today.
• `Our side of the border is open but the Afghan side was blocked by putting cement blocks at the crossing point,` the officials said, adding that there was no movement at the border after the closure by the Afghan side


3. UN report warns of global water crisis amid climate change

• More than five billion people could have difficulty accessing water in 2050, the United Nations warned on October 5, 2021, urging leaders to seize the initiative at the COP26 summit.
• Already in 2018, 3.6 billion people had inadequate access to water for at least one month per year, said a new report from the UN`s World Meteorological Organisation.
• `We need to wake up to the looming water crisis, said WMO chief Petteri Taalas


4. US representative to lobby Congress to end ban on world fair funding

• US Commissioner General to the Expo in Dubai Robert Clark, who was appointed by President Joe Biden, said on October 5, 2021 that he would lobby Congress to pass legislation to allow the government to finance the country`s participation in future worldfairs.
• The United States is banned by Congress from using public funds to take part in fairs organised by the Bureau International des Expositions (BIE), like the six-month Expo that started in Dubai last week.
• Host the United Arab Emirates instead financed the pavilion of its key security partner, which houses the US exhibition, at a cost of $60 million


5. Iranians meet Taliban

• Taliban leaders met Iranian officials on October 4, 2021 in an attempt to regulate trade between the countries.
• They agreed to increase trading hours at the Islam Qala border crossing from eight hours per day to 24 and to better regulate the collection of tariffs and improve road works. Customs are a key source of domestic revenue for Afghanistan


6. US diplomat to hold key talks on Afghan issue

• US Deputy Secretary of State Wendy Sherman arrives in Islamabad on Thursday for talks aimed at bridging a growing chasm between the United States and Pakistan on the Afghan issue.
• The State Department said Ms Sherman will be in New Delhi on Oct 6 for a series of bilateral meetings, civil society events, and the India Ideas Summit. On Oct 7, she travels to Mumbai for engagements with business and civil society.
• `Deputy Secretary Sherman will complete her trip by traveling to Islamabad on Oct. 7-8 to meet senior officials,` said a media note issued by the office of the department`s spokesperson


7. Afghanistan to start issuing passports again after months of delays

• Afghanistan will start issuing passports to its citizens again, a senior official said on October 5, 2021, following months of delays that hampered attempts by those trying to flee the country after the Taliban seized control in August.
• The process, which had slowed even before the Taliban`s return to power following the withdrawal of US forces, will provide applicants with documents physically identical to those issued by the previous government, the official said


8. Nobel Physics Prize honours climate work

• US-Japanese scientist Syukuro Manabe, Klaus Hasselmann of Germany and Giorgio Parisi of Italy on October 5, 2021 won the Nobel Physics Prize for climate models and the understanding of physical systems, the jury said.
• The Nobel committee said it was sending a message with its prize announcement just weeks before the COP26 climate summit in Glasgow, as the rate of global warming sets off alarm bells around the world


9. Whistleblower says Facebook operating in the shadows

• A Facebook whistleblower went before US lawmakers on October 5, 2021 to push them to regulate the social media giant, after an outage hit potentially billions of users and highlighted global dependence on its services.
• Ex-employee Frances Haugen testified on Capitol Hill after she leaked reams of internal research to authorities and The Wall Street Journal, which detailed how Facebook knew its sites were potentially harmful to young people`s mental health


10. Russian actress, director dock at ISS to film first movie in space

• A Russian actress and director on October 5, 2021 arrived at the International Space Station (ISS) in a bid to beat the United States and film the first movie in orbit.
• The Russian crew is set to beat a Hollywood project that was announced last year by `Mission Impossible` star Tom Cruise together with Nasa and Elon Musk`s SpaceX.
• Actress Yulia Peresild, 37, and film director Klim Shipenko, 38, took off from the Russia-leased Baikonur Cosmodrome in ex-Soviet Kazakhstan as scheduled
