1. Ordinance issued to extend term of NAB chairman

• Amid criticism by opposition parties, President Dr Arif Alvi on October 6, 2021 signed an ordinance that sharply reduces the jurisdiction of the National Accountability Bureau (NAB) and enables the president to reappoint the incumbent NAB chairman or extend his tenure.
• Contrary to the rhetoric of some federal ministers that ruled out consultation over the appointment of NAB chairman with opposition leader Shehbaz Sharif as the latter faces corruption references, the National Accountability Second Amendment Ordinance 2021 has amplified the opposition`s role in the appointment of NAB chairman.

2. Biometric proof must for buying $500 or above: SBP

• The State Bank of Pakistan (SBP) has imposed another restriction on buying of dollars from open market as it made biometric verification compulsory for all those who would buy $500 or above from open market. On the other hand, the dollar set a new record as the price rose to Rs171 on Wednesday.
• `The exchange companies will be required to conduct biometric verification for all foreign currency sale transactions equivalent to $500 and above and outward remittances,` said the SBP on Wednesday.
• Earlier, anyone could purchase dollars from exchange companies by providing a copy of national identity card. `This requirement will be applicable with effect from October 22, 2021,` the SBP added

3. ISI gets new chief in army reshuffle

• Lt Gen Nadeem Ahmed Anjum was on October 6, 2021 appointed as new chief of the Inter-Services Intelligence (ISI).
• Gen Anjum will replace Lt Gen Faiz Hameed, who has been posted out as Commander of Peshawar based Corps XL The appointment of the new ISI director general comes after days of intense speculation about the change at the country`s premier intelligence service. It is believed that the matter had been under consideration for some time, but was announced after the corps commanders meeting held on Tuesday. Chief of the Army Staff Gen Qamar Javed Bajwa later met Prime Minister Imran Khan on Wednesday for a final formal consultation on the new pick.

4. Chohan divested of yet another portfolio

• Chief Minister Usman Buzdar has yet again stripped prisons minister Fayyazul Hassan Chohan of his portfolio of official spokesperson for the Punjab government in a matter of two months and handed over the slot to the newly-appointed special assistant on information and special initiatives Hasaan Khawar.
• The chief minister`s office on Wednesday superseded it`s August 13 order, and gave the provincial government`s official spokesperson portfolio to Mr Khawar, `politely` showing the door to Mr Chohan

5. Balochistan crisis deepens as three ministers, two advisers resign

• Political crisis in Balochistan deepened on October 6, 2021 when a group of disgruntled ministers, advisers and parliamentary secretaries submitted their resignations to the provincial governor after an embattled Jam Kamal Khan Alyani ignored the 24-hour deadline set by his opponents for him to step down as chief minister.
• Official sources said the angry group met Governor Syed Zahoor Ahmed Agha at the Governor House late in night and handed over their resignations to him

6. Water crisis confronts both Pakistan and India, says UN report

• Nearly 2.3 billion people live in water-stressed countries, which include India and Pakistan, says the latest UN report on the looming water crisis.
• Globally, every two-minute a child under five dies from a preventable waterborne disease. In Sub-Saharan Africa, women and girls spend an estimated 40 billion hours a year collecting water. One in four lack access to toilets, a critical factor for overall health and sanitation.
• The report titled, The State of Climate Services 2021: Water, a collaboration between the WMO, international organisations, development agencies and scientific institutions, estimates that the number of people with inadequate access to water will top 5 billion by 2050 versus 3.6 billion in 2018

7. American, German win Chemistry Nobel for work on catalysts

• Germany`s Benjamin List and US-based David MacMillan on October 6, 2021 won the Nobel Chemistry Prize for developing a tool to build molecules which has helped make chemistry more environmentally friendly.
• Their tool, which they developed independently of each other in 2000, can be used to control and accelerate chemical reactions, exerting a big impact on drugs research.
• Prior to their work, scientists believed there were only two types of catalysts metals and enzymes

8. Nato expels eight Russians

• The North Atlantic Treaty Organisation on October 6, 2021 expelled eight members of Russia`s mission to the alliance who were `undeclared intelligence officers`, the latest deterioration in East-West ties that are already at post-Cold War lows.
• A Nato official said Moscow`s mission to the alliance headquarters in Brussels would be halved `in response to suspected malign Russian activities, including killings and espionage`.
• The Russian foreign ministry said Moscow would make a response at an `appropriate time`.

9. Gallipoli shipwrecks open to public

• Hulking hulls of mighty warships greet divers off Turkey`s western shore, testament to a World War I battle that gave birth to nations and is now an underwater museum.
• The British Royal Navy`s `HMS Majestic` is just one of 14 shipwrecks at Gallipoli, a peninsula that has been the graveyard of navies stretching back to ancient times.
• The last great battle for its adjoining Dardanelles Strait leading from the Mediterranean towards Russia was a fiasco for British and French forces, who beat a retreat after months of fighting that claimed tens of thousands of lives

10. Photographer Sangrami passes away

• Photojournalist Hassan ul Hug, popularly known as Sangrami, passed away in Vaughan, a northern municipality of greater Toronto, according to information that reached here on Wednesday. He was 66.
• Mr Sangrami had an open heart surgery some eight weeks ago, but developed complications afterwards. He was again rushed to hospital, where he died. He was a familiar face at Karachi Press Club and took an active part in journalists` trade union activities during the 1970s and 1980s.
• He was among the activists who of ten led protest rallies
