1. Senior bureaucrat hired as HEC executive director

• After announcing the vacant post thrice and failing to get a `suitable` candidate, the Higher Education Commission hired services of senior bureaucrat Dr Shaista Sohail (BPS-22) on deputation against the post of Executive Director (ED).
• The post fell vacant in October 2018 after the resignation of Dr Arshad Ali, who was appointed after a competitive process on the MP-l post on a four-year fixed term


2. Bajaur`s first police station opens in Utmankhel

• The first police station of Bajaur tribal district was opened in Qazafi town, the tehsil headquarters of Utmankhel, on October 8, 2020.
• Deputy inspector general of police, Malakand division, Mohammad Ijaz Khan inaugurated the police station. Besides tribal elders, senior officials of the police department and district administration and political activists attended the opening ceremony of the police station.
• Speaking on the occasion, DIG Ijaz Khan said that it was the first police station formally being established in Bajaur tribal district since the extension of policing system to the tribal districts


3. Roosevelt Hotel to shut doors from Oct 31

• The Roosevelt Hotel, a Pakistani possession in the heart of Manhattan, announced on October 8, 2020 it would shut its doors on guests permanently on Oct 31.
• `Due to the current economic impacts, after almost 100 years of welcoming guests to The Grand Dame of New York, The Roosevelt Hotel, is regretfully closing its doors permanently as of Oct 31, 2020,` the announcement said.
• A hotel spokesperson, when asked for comments, said: `Yes, it is closing down as announced on the website.` Asked why, she said: `Email your questions and we will respond


4. Military planes fight blaze at Russian arms depot

• Hundreds of military personnel, several planes and helicopters scrambled on October 8, 2020 to put out a blaze at a Russian arms depot that left at least 16 people needing hospital treatment.
• The wildfire broke out on Wednesday afternoon on the territory of a depot in the Ryazan region, reportedly containing some 75,000 tonnes of munitions. The flames spread to warehouses, setting off a large explosion.
• Sixteen people were hospitalised with injuries but no one died, the health ministry said


5. National Resilience Day observed

• The National Resilience Day was observed on Thursday (October 8) to mark the 15th anniversary of the tragic October 2005 earthquake.
• The day was observed to pay tribute to the martyrs and express solidarity with victims of the earthquake.
• In Azad Jammu and Kashmir and Khyber Pakhtunkhwa, special ceremonies were organised to commemorate the natural calamity and special prayers were offered for the martyrs


6. Turkey reopens Cyprus resort after 46 years, angers Greeks

• Turkish troops on October 8, 2020 reopened parts of a Cyprus seaside resort that became a ghost town amid war in 1974, sparking controversy days ahead of an election in the Turkish north.
• The move at Varosha threatened to further inflame tensions in the eastern Mediterranean, where Turkey has been engaged in bitter maritime disputes with Greece and Cyprus


7. American poet wins Nobel Literature Prize

• American poet Louise Gluck won the 2020 Nobel Literature Prize on October 8, 2020, an unexpected choice known for themes of childhood and family life that draw inspiration from myths and classical motifs.
• Gluck, 77, was honoured `for her unmistakable poetic voice that with austere beauty makes individual existence universal`, the Academy said.
• Gluck won the Pulitzer Prize in 1993 for her collection The Wild Iris and the National Book Award for her latest collection, Faithful and Virtuous Night, in 2014


8. US blacklists virtually Iran`s entire financial sector

• The Trump administration has blacklisted virtually all of Irans financial sector, dealing another blow to an economy that is already reeling under US sanctions.
• The move will deepen tensions with European nations and others over Iran.
• October 8, 2020`s move is hits 18 Iranian banks that had thus far escaped the bulk of re-imposed U.S. sanctions and, more importantly, subjects foreign, non-Iranian financial institutions to penalties for doing business with them. Thus, it effectively cuts them off from the international financial system.


9. All US troops in Afghanistan should be home by Christmas: Trump

• US President Donald Trump announced on Wednesday night that all US troops in Afghanistan could be home by Christmas, putting an end to America`s longest war.
• On October 8, 2020, Taliban welcomed the announcement and called it a `very positive step` towards the implementation of the US-Taliban peace deal.
• Just before Wednesday night`s vice-presidential debate, Mr Trump posted a tweet on his official account, declaring: `We should have the small remaining number of our brave men and women serving in Afghanistan home by Christmas.


10. Central Punjab win Second XI National T20 Cup

• Central Punjab grabbed the Second XI National T20 Cup title with a seven-wicket win over Northern in the last match of the single-league event here at the Gaddafi Stadium on October 8, 2020. The Nauman Anwar-led side topped the six-team points table with four wins from their five matches, while win-less Northern finished on the last spot.
• An unbeaten 57-ball 66 by Junaid Ali set the comfortable victory as Central Punjab overhauled the 134-run target with 11 balls to spare. The wicketkeeper-batsman took the lead role in the innings after Nauman, who made a quickfire 26 from 13 balls hitting four fours and a six, was dismissed by Athar Mehmood, who took two wickets for 36 runs.
